The east side of Toronto is definitely less popular than its western counterpart. Being the older part of the city, it does have a quieter and slower pace of life compared to neighborhoods like Queen West, Kensington Market or Yorkville. But if you are looking for some local restaurant favorite's, sprawling parks, cultural neighborhoods and even the best beach in Toronto, look no further than the east side of the city! In this tour I take you guys through some (not all!) of my favorite neighborhoods in the area like Greektown, Riverdale, Chinatown East, Riverside, Leslieville, Little India and The Beaches. This is a great tour to do if you are visiting the city for the first time or if you are actually considering moving to Toronto and looking to settle in a quieter part of the city. Hope you find this video helpful! xx

As a TO East Ender since 1993, and coming from London UK, it was a breath of fresh air to have so many parks, beaches, and trees especially on this side of the city. I understand that before the Bloor viaduct was built this area was seen as a quieter back water cut off from the city by the Don Valley. That might also explain why Bloor Street turns into Danforth Avenue as I imagine they were not directly attached before the viaduct was built. Thanks for a great vignette Alina - Cherry Beach is another favourite spot for me :)

As always, a great video, Alina. Harriet and I have been to Toronto many times for work conferences. We enjoyed both east and west sides of the city. The east for us was Greektown. The food is so good and priced so reasonably. There are so many parts of the city that offer so much. That's why we keep going back. Thank you so much for walking us down memory lane. Sending much love♥♥ from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki

My husband downplays the significance when he says his family is from East end Toronto but his last name is PASSMORE! In the past, his family farm was a huge part of what is now the Metro Toronto Zoo and along that way heading West from there... Also, there's Passmore Forest and the fragmented Passmore Avenue LOL Our favourites are Kew Beach & Ashbridges Bay. I love going for a walk there! Sooooo nice! Heather xo

I lived in 8n those areas more than 30 years ago. The reason that Bloor and Danforth are two streets is that there wasn't a bridge there 100 years ago. And that bridge was once distoyed due to bad design and was rebuilt in 50s with the subway lines underneath. When you taking subway andcross the bridge, looks down to a park. That is very beautiful too. For the Greek restaurant, the prices haven't changed much in 30 years! In those years the famus restaurant that I remember was Mr Greek and a beef souvlaki plate would cost about Can$10. The minimum wage was about $5 per hour and a McDonalds meal would cost about $5. A subway ticket was about $1 to $1.25. how much is the subway ticket now? 30 years ago, the lake Ontario water was so polluted that nobody would swim there so they build a big free pool near woodbine park and the pool was free. I think the pool is gone now because it wasn't adding values to the neighborhoods.

Hi, Alina, just catching up on your Toronto videos after being on holiday for three weeks. I grew up in Toronto -- first in Parkdale as a little girl and then in East York --between Broadview and Pape Avenues. The last of it in York Mills. I remember these neighbourhoods well and even though I left TO more than 40 years ago --they haven't changed all that much except for all the many restaurants and shops. Glad to hear you are coming to Nova Scotia at last where I have lived since the late'70s. You will enjoy it! Hope you make it to Cape Breton -- the most scenic part of the province. Halifax is an amazing city with the ocean at your doorstep.

Never really spent much time in the east end when I was living in the city. It all felt, for lack of a better word, 'grimier' than the west side and I always felt it to be a bit disconcerting for whatever reason. It was like somebody flipped a switch after you crossed over Yonge St. Of course, my main transit into the east end was mostly via Queen, so, that may have something to do with it. But, that was a long time ago and it's no doubt a lot better now. Biking to the Beaches via the Martin Goodman was fun, though. Anyway, I'm shocked that those are still reasonable prices at the Greek restaurant in this day and age and it all looks very delicious and that Greek salad looks like it didn't have any lettuce in it. Not a fan of lettuce in Greek salad. I'll have to check that place out if I'm ever in the neighbourhood again.

Well, can tell you've been back in Canada for a while, cause you states a 14 dollar lunch was reasonable. In Asia that would be supper expensive, but in the land of high costs, that is cheap. I recognized some places from your InstaGram posts, but it was mostly all new to me. If it was anywhere else, I'd give it pretty high marks, but it's still Toronto. Thanks for an enjoyable food and neighbourhood tour.

The East side of Toronto was for the labor class (like East York, or Scarborogh), and the North and Northwest side were for the rich and upper middle class (like Bridle Path, Rosedale, or Forest Hill). The downtown West was for the Jewish town then and Chinatown now. For some reason, the Jewish, Chinese, and Italian new immigrants were living close to each other like in New York City, Montreal, Toronto, etc. (Perhaps they all enjoyed good foods?)

Not such a bad east side when compared to the east side of Cleveland or Youngstown, Ohio. Both are very slummy and if you walked through them or took the Cleveland Rapid ( light rail system ) you would probably find yourself in the ER. Youngstown doesn't have a light rail. I always kept my piece of steel pipe or cheater bar in my car when driving through both and just slowed down and looked both ways for a stop sign or red light as they do not ticket for not stopping anymore. You can get safely into the near east side from the far, as in really far, east side if you take the proper rapid line in Cleveland. It takes you down near the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University, a safe island in a sea of crime. I don't miss either city except for my friends of which I keep in touch with a few.

Yeah technically these are east of Yonge so it's part of East Toronto, but keep going east past the Beach and enter Scarborough which is still part of Toronto and further east than what you've presented. Tonnes of parks in Scarborough and the food is something else. Scarborough goes from as far south as the lake to Steeles in the north and from Victoria Park in the west to the border of Pickering in the east. Guild Inn Park, Bluffer's Park, East Point Park, Rouge Beach, Port Union Waterfront Park, Sky City (Midland and Finch), Summilicious for some of the best smoked meat sandwiches in T.O., Northern Smokes for Texas bbq., Mark's Pizza, Lamanna's Italian Bakery, the numerous Asian restaurants on Steeles and along Sheppard, the middle eastern restaurants along Lawrence Ave. E., St. Germain Bakery, etc.

Generally you can swim in the lake, but occasionally there may be public advisories when there is poor water quality at specific beaches.
