CelloWisdom:
It is the melody which is the charm of music, and it is that which is most difficult to produce. The invention of a fine melody is a work of genius.

The piano audio is clipping (distorting) when loud. Recording Tip: Mic the piano and cello separately. A pair of small diaphragm condenser mics at 10 feet up will capture the piano sound beautifully. I use 2x Oktava MK-012. Then use a spot mic for the cello. 2.5 feet off the ground is about right. Balance the two channels and you're good to go. Zoom H6 has pretty good mic pres. Mackie Onyx Blackbird has really nice preamps and AD conversion. But you'll need a laptop also. Alisa Weilerstein recorded her Kodaly Sonata with a Shure KSM-27 mic. Sounds absolutely glorious on cello!

I love Weilerstein as a player but I could only laugh when she suggested playing to a metronome and then starting clapping at 13:09 completely inconsistently.

How does AW play with such a 'peculiar' bow hold??? Also that 'never look at your fingerboard' is such a 'for-younglings' thing because they tend to look too much. It may be more in tune after because of the Masterclass effect but the sound is so stiff because she is not looking at / feeling the bow as her neck gets blocked not to look down... :(

actually , i have to disagree, for beginners, intermediate, its fine, but at her level, the bowing needs to be the focus.

So many people here are better cellists or know more about the cello than Ms. Weilerstein. I guess you are all just too modest to have become world famous as she has.

I Truly don't think so AW has an amazing sound, so deep and consistent she really takes all the instrument can give is amazing...

Or just not interested in a career in music? I get what you're trying to say, but there's more to being an internationally acclaimed musician than you think. Connections, money, image, appearance, personality, background, motivation/drive, marketing, willingness and WILL are all just as important as skill. I know some people who have been offered the most amazing opportunities, but turned them down bc they simply didn't desire to go down that particular road. My elder brother consistently won or reached (semi-)finals of both national and international competitions for 7 years straight and then he dropped out of conservatory at the age of 20 to pursue a career in architecture. He still practises 3 hours a day, so he loves the instrument. There are plenty of people like him

This was a bit painful to watch... 😳😳 I think the performer did great. She was rhythmically accurate, nailed all the notes, landed all those shifts, and played expressively. I like Alisa. I really do. But I don't think her critiques/instructions were particularly helpful On this one. Perhaps, if the performer had played something Romantic like the Dvorak or if the instructor were someone like Lynn Harrell or Steven Isserlis, this would've been better....

Remember, at this level its almost always about personal interpretation, highly specific techniques and phrasings emotions etc.. Its meant to break a student out of their way of playing only temporary,,the student decides to take or leave or incorporate what they learned,

Don't you love the way she lectures the student on "knowing" where the notes are in high positions, then proceeds to miss them herself-twice. As for the bow hold. . . what can one say. But there are people out there who think they are witnessing the state of the art.

Your brain is binary in focus,,once you add more than 2 task, something must be put into muscle muscles memory Looking at finger board takes half of your focus. Left hand and ear training should be done subconsciously at this level, her focus should be her bowing, the music and listening for intonation not looking at fingerboard Imagine playing a concert and you're looking solely at your board when your focus should be the conductor if there is one, listening to ensemble orchestra and your bowing. Yes,you can look at the fingerboard but your focus is better elsewhere
