Egghead Software, Inc. was a leading Internet-based discount retailer of computer hardware, software, peripherals, and accessories. For most of its history, the company operated a chain of specialty retail stores under the name Egghead, Inc. However, increased competition from mass merchandisers and consumer electronics 'superstores' eroded Egghead's sales and profits during the 1990s and forced the company to re-evaluate its strategy. In 1998, Egghead made the bold decision to close its 'bricks and mortar' retail operation. After re-christening itself Egghead.com, the company opted to sell its products primarily through the Internet, as well as by phone and catalogue. In addition to running its eponymous web site--Egghead.com--the company also operated an Internet auction site (www.surplusauction.com) and re-sold com-puter hardware, software, and accessories at its off-price web warehouse (www.surplusdirect .com). Moreover, Egghead.com did own a 25 percent stake in Elekom Corporation, which cre-ates electronic commerce applications. In 1999, Egghead.com's Internet empire did expand again when the company merged with on-line auctioneer Onsale Inc. in the year 2001 Egghead.com filed for bankruptcy liquidated and its domain name was acquired by Amazon.com.

In the mid-late 90's I referred to Egghead as "the incredible shrinking company" - every year they seemed to reverse themselves, from being a discount software store, to being "the Nordstrom of computer stores", to selling distressed merchandise, to trying to compete with CompUSA's large-format stores, to becoming a dotcom-only store, and then just their domain name being the only thing left to sell to Amazon. I remember some executive got the brilliant idea they were going to sell laptops because they were higher-margin than software, but nobody bothered to install anti-theft security lockdowns for the display models, at the same time they decided to extend store hours while cutting staff - then, who could have guessed, thousands of dollars of laptops were shoplifted when only one person was working in the store at closing time. They fired several of those employees, after which, surprise, surprise, nobody would work the closing shift because it was impossible for one person to prevent shoplifting. A classic example of how stupid executives can ruin a company.
