Calm has returned to Sierra Leone following rare violent protests against high living costs.
The government imposed a nationwide curfew after at least 21 demonstrators and six police officers were killed.
President Julius Maada Bio says the unrest is 'terrorism', instigated by Sierra Leoneans living abroad.

Corruption is hard to get rid of and harder to prevent from growing. It's the scourge of the people. Even good men with good intentions can easily get corrupted when they see that they can steal. Corruption is growing here in the USA and it sucks!

Do you honestly believe the 158 trips he has made would have salvaged the situation? The same problem you have in Sierra Leone is the same being experienced in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sri lanka, South africa and actually the whole of africa as a whole. One of the main differences with Sierra leone is that you have had ebola, corona and civil unrest so it will pain sierra leone more. Actually this are the effects of civil wars in the long run and it needs patience. Imagine trying to equate yourself with someone who has over 15 years headstart, its not possible. What i can affirm to you is that whoever will rule sierra Leone for the next 20 years will still face the same problem. The govt is between a rock and very hard place for now. Its patience and cooperation as opposed to protests that is needed. Even the opposition does not have the answer to your debacle. The tangible benefits that you want to see am certain exists only that you choose to overlook or are angry at the time, even the worst dictators did good same as bad

At 18:28 the woman says the population is 80% young people. If thats true, that is so so incredibly sad. An entire generation wiped out because of such a violent and harsh war. An entire generation not given the chance to grow up, to be parents, aunts, uncles etc. then grandparents, mentors etc. The obvious and unforseen consequences this has on the youth of today and will have on future generations cant be denied. Much love and respect to the people of Sierra Leone from the US.

Thanks very much sir for your concerns! Really their is no employment facilities, police brutality, corruption, inflation , high cost of living 80% of our population is young people. Moreover, 75% of young people living below below poverty line evey day. Their is no free quality education.

Seriie Leone 🇸🇱 should incorporate industries that process 50% of their raw materials , because exporting finished products gives more income than exporting raw materials. Corruption, tribalism and religious difference are minor issues the problem is Africa isn't INDUSTRIALISED, they even import food, making them LOW PRODUCTIVITY ECONOMIES and PERFECT BREEDING GROUND for ISIS to recruit jobless youths, corruption to happen easily due to underfunded law enforcement agencies, and populist politics with absurd policies appealing the majority uneducated peasants Assuming I am president of an African state that gets 75% of it's revenue from rough diamonds and I generate 5 billion dollars from international trade, and I steal 3 billion, I might use the 3 billion to start a personal diamond cutting industry that employs hundred of thousands of people growing the economy since the 5 billion will still be circulating in the economy, and the only problem will be income inequality and oligarchy, but instead African elites would have transferred their loot to western countries milking away the 3 billion from circulation and leaving 2 billion to circulate. LEGALISE CORRUPTION IF FIGHTING IT IS IMPOSSIBLE Africa needs to stop EXPORTING RAW MATERIALS and tell their ELITES to transfer their LOOT as INVESTMENTS in building indegenous companies which will force them to build roads, airports and invest in education inorder to facilitate commerce for their companies to find favourable business environment to thrive and FDI will start flowing because their is incentive by politicians turned oligarchs to keep the country stable ,but I don't think Europe will be happy or willing to engage in such conversations because of loose of raw resources and massive capital finance flow, Africa isn't poor, they have rich politicians who they can turn to oligarchs since this people have been milking Africa and exploiting poor regulations by Europe and US to channel the money out for decades and can do multi billion investments, waiting for perfect business environment as suggested by Western interventionist so FDI from the west can come is like parking your car in the drive way and waiting for the red light to turn green 5 blocks from you house, and Europeans will never see Africa's hidden garden despite being more beautiful than their glorified waste land which relies on the jungles to remain watered and manured.

Governments in Africa especially in my country Sierra Leone should take more responsibility in accepting their failures to make the lives of their citizens better. Citizens are protesting for better and comfortable lives. They are not armed citizens but completely harmless. The law enforcers especially the police are the ones causing the violence. You see many of these people who are saying violent protesters are uttering completely biased statement bcoz we can see and analyse from the videos shown that no protester was with gun shooting at policemen. When you look at the problems in Sierra Leone they are becoming very alarming as of now. This current government is threatening the lives of citizens to express their freedom of speech by sending thugs to beat up people talking about the bad governance in the country. Some of the people who try to express their right to speak are in prison up to this hour. One of our famous Musicians by name of LAJ has been jailed unjustly just bcoz of expressing his freedom of speech. Another victim is a famous political leader of a party PDP (Mohamed Kamaraimba). He was falsely alleged of raping and was imprisoned and still in prison without appearing in court to be judged guilty or not guilty. You see this current government has been deliberately damaging our democracy. During this protest could you believe a whole civilian deputy minister of internal affairs by name of Lahai Lawrence Lema was on the streets with guns and thugs shooting and killing protesters? However you don't see Masella Samba mentioning that or even calling that violent. There is no responsible leadership in our country currently as I speak to you. Just recently the president arrived back home from a vacation. He travels frequently without any benefits for the nation. So if I may list the problems of this current government as of now would be: 1. Absolutely no freedom of speech 2. Political intimidation of opposition parties 3. Very high cost of living 4. Foreign currency exchange rates are very high 5. Unemployment 6. Embezzlement in government institutions 7. Police brutality 8. Poor health facilities 9. Poor environmental conditions in public schools 10. Poor education. 11. Corruption especially within the government heads. Having listed most of the problems, instead of the government representative Masella Samba blaming citizens, let her take responsibility and address the problems of the nation. WE ARE TIRED OF TRAVELING ABROAD FOR GREENER PASTURE! Give us better and comfortable life is all we ask for Mr President. Nothing more. We are really fed up @ALJAZEERA

Most people in government do things to keep their government job and government positions and do not represent the will of the nation. Then you have media. Let government turn off the taxation system in the country and completely stop taking funds from citizens willingly or unwillingly. People who are not scared to work and even take a loss when necessary. Where is the work ethics? The ONLY way to succeed is through FAITH in God. Without that, we are dead already. I know. She asked a very important question here about why is Sierra Leone facing these economic challenges despite it's dynamic population and the country having a lot to give. In my humble opinion, it's motivated by a broken political and leadership system where people come into power to enrich themselves and their faimly members. People are appointed into government offices based on family ties, tribalism and reciprocity; instead of competency and objectivity. The leaders are signing contracts with foreign companies that put the average citizen at a disadvantage. For instance, the cost of keeping a cell phone is more expensive in Sierra Leone than in the US. There's no price control. Supplies of certain commodities are controlled by a few companies and they change prices at will with no valid justification, leaving the poor people at their mercy. Most Importantly, there's no accountability. could go on forever but I'll rest my case here.

Unemployment is a recipe for violence and as such, government has not done enough in that sector to alleviate the living standards of the average citizen. Even the frequent travels of government officials are provocative to the suffering masses. There is still hope for a better economic and political stability. However, violence must not be a means to an end in whatever form. I am proud to be a Sierra Leonean and God will surely intervene to unite us all🇸🇱🤝.

How will God intervene,this is the problem for Africa, we leave our destiny in the hands of others,there is only one way our, it is for people to become self reliant and stop passing responsibility to others. .make a plan and pool resources, if you have no money, but have a skill use that skill as your contribution. Leave the city and go into farming, home school your children and eat healthy, use knowledge to make work less tiring and more efficient. Sell the excess food for community needs and survive till things stabilise.

Countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya have shown the effectiveness of the diaspora in securing peace and social economic development. Still surprised that Sierra Leone as a country is yet to embrace agriculture. The country has slowly gotten used to being spoonfed by foreign aid and support. The government simply goes about commissioning projects by foreign donors without inspiring their people. Their diaspora is also complicit. People building and renting houses at rates only expats can afford. The economic divide is steep. With the country thriving on the expat/tourism community, should any conflict scare them away, i am afraid what the outcome may be.

Your take on this issue is apt. The whole country needs to go back to the drawing to reasses the way forward. Sierra Leoneans should realize that its government cannot solve already its socio- economic problems. The responsibility to move the nation is every citizen's . Let's start farming to reduce the dependence on imported goods, Minimize expenditures, Let go of political divide/ dependence, Remember that we owe those who lost their lives in the decade long civil war a better Sierra Leone. We owe our children a better future . Enough of the blame game, let's rise up to the challenge. Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world, It's citizens need to be reminded of thar fact and encouraged to utilize the country's resources and man power to move forward. Change of government is not the primary solution, as any other government will inherit the same problems.

The violent intervention of the police that heightened the irreparable lost of lifes and properties is a great cause for concern. My heart goes to the relatives and loved ones of the victims of that saddest day in the country. May their souls rest in peace. Irrespective of the global economic crisis, the government is not seen to be responsible to the whole nation. Every supports and positions are directed on party, regional and tribal lines. Majority, with special reference to the opposition strongholds are not only highly maginalised and rejected. But subjected to deadly torture. Currently, political detention is the order of the day, opposition figures languishing in horrific goal settings and deprived from not only seeing their loved ones, but even denied bails despite the fact that their alleged crimes are bailable offences. Do you refer to this as a real democracy? The president is a despot who takes pleasure in looting state resources that has collapsed the economy badly. State institutions are being hijacked by the president who used them to his advantage to oppress the opposition. Putting all these factors together, one could expect a spontaneous reaction from the suffering masses. Good to hear that the security tough handed response definitely escalated the situation. The government needs to positively and actively engaged with the people. But sad that the government always uses threatening and inflamable rhetoric to intimidate the citizens 🙄 As am writing now, videos are circulating about the deputy internal minister with party thugs kidnapping and torturing innocent opposition members alleged to have caused the protest. Is this the way a responsible government minister should behave in a so called fragile peaceful nation?

Communication is one of the biggest problem that led to the death of innocent citizens. Even mad individuals were killed in Makeni during the period of the curfew. Some were shot right in their homes, I know two victims who are in Masanga hospital presently. Majority of Security personnels are controlled by politics. They are supposed to be neutral.

We are praying for God to help us. What I saw during the war as a child below eight makes me to hate all forms of violence. Whenever I hard a gun shot or voices of violent people all I will see and hear is my experience of the war. My Heart is bleeding for my beloved nation I pledge my love and loyalty to. In Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 today people preferred going even in Ukraine 🇺🇦 instead of staying in this country. Things are difficult, 😣 Police 👮‍♂️harassment is too much , no justice for the citizens, Low Job facility for the youth, no price control, A lots of graduates 🎓 are suffering no job for them , no freedom of speech 🎤, all said to be done ☑️ Sierra Leonean are going through a lot we need your intervention.

Sierra Leone made my Pastor a Bishop many years ago in Africa, and my Pastor for years sent donations to help people there, and HE also supported one of our Missionarys to live there and Minister to the people of Sierra Leone because He loved the people there. His name was Bishop Milton Mathis. I don't know if anyone there would know him because this was back in the 1970's. I was very young then, and now I'm old as he was then.

Why blame the Diaspora? Our brothers and sisters are in the kitchen and are feeling the heat. The people must share in the weather of Africa. Governments in Africa must consider the people by changing their policies

We're always hopeful for peaceful resolutions; however, that ship has sailed long ago. The images in the background tell a different story from the words dubbed over them. Recent global events such as the pandemic and supply chain issues related to war elsewhere have put their recent stability to the test which unfortunately brought people back to what they have been acquainted to. A passionate diaspora abroad cannot ensure a peaceful democracy in Sierra Leone.
