The war in Darfur is the conflict the world seems to have forgotten, but it hasn't gone away.
And neither has the leader of Sudan, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, the man the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for back in 2009 for alleged war crimes in the region. He also was the first person to be charged by the ICC for the crime of genocide.
Bashir, who took power in 1989, is leading a nation that has been grappling with ethnic and religious conflict for more than 50 years - not just in the Darfur region but also in the south, which eventually led to the division of the country and the establishment of South Sudan.
A provisional peace agreement was signed with the non-Arab rebels in Darfur in 2006, and there are talks going on between them and the government to move towards a final deal.
But there are still allegations of serious ongoing violence. Recent attacks, including one in September, left hundreds of civilians dead - many of them children - in the Jebel Marra region in central Darfur. This time, the seriousness of the attacks was compounded by allegations that the government went further than any previous time by employing chemical weapons.
We discuss these allegations, the prospects for real peace and the role of Sudan's President Bashir as the country's Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour talks to Al Jazeera.

Why should Africa be the only continent apart of the ICC when the USA, RUSSIA, CHINA and every major power country isn't a member of this court.

King Kotini the ICC deals with all war crimes not just countries killing their own people. Let's see USA police dept killed 1400 people this year, where is the investigation. The USA/UK are bombing in Syria killing people. Syria didn't invite US/UK into their airspace and under ICC law that is a violation of invasion and terrorism. Where are the investigations into those countries. China slaughtered it's own people but don't get investigated. How about THE USA has been in war for 222 years out of its 239 years of existing killing millions around the world and has been taking to court or sanctioned yet. Yeah lets target one region and not a entire country that has bombed and invaded several countries.

Papito no i agree but one still wonders who orders the killing of the American people by their own like Sudan's janjuweed is doing with those southerners....their President?? And not to excuse invading other countries but African despots have a bad tendency of feasting on their own with no consequences

Either all the superpowers including but not limited too USA, Russia, and China ratify the Rome statute and join the ICC, or the ICC should be disbanded. At which point regional courts must be formed to deal with genocide and human rights violations.
