Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena is best known for his innovative social housing solutions that confront problems around rapid urbanisation and inequality. In 2016, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize, the highest accolade in architecture.
South African architect Sumayya Vally challenges conventional Western principles and celebrates the local textures and traditions of her hometown, Johannesburg. In 2021, she became the youngest architect to design London’s Serpentine Pavilion and is the 2023 director of the Islamic Arts Biennale.
In this episode, Vally and Aravena discuss how architecture is able not only to improve people’s lives but also better reflect who we are.

Frivolous. Architects with huge egos, which does nothing to address today's issues, like buildings that support sustainable communities. These people need to check their egos at the door. I am disappointed in Aljazeera on this one. Two thumbs down. Who cares about a couple of egomaniac architects. This is an embarrassment to the human race. Feeding the egos of these people while so many suffer, ridiculous.

what are you on about?? these people are advocating for genuinely responsible and sustainable solutions to some of the most pressing issues in the field. How is any of this about their egos??

As a fellow Chilean, I've been following Alejandro's work for years...there's nothing egocentric about him. He is an asset to the architectural world
