Orphanages in South Korea are seeing an increase in the number of babies they are having to look after. The influx is due in part to a new law intended to improve the adoption process. But the pressures of parenting, combined with the stigma attached to being a single mother, is also having a negative impact. Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Seoul.

the shame is on the men who cowardly leave the women when they got pregnant and let them deal with everything ! why on earth would it be on the women shoulders ? !

Precious babies. It's sad story but at least the man running the apt seems to adore them.

Koreans are some of the hardest working people in the world, with Seoul being the hardest working city based on number of daily working hours. Beneath the ultra-modern, high tech, flashy K-pop exterior, Korea has a major orphan problem (some say up to 100,000 orphans when you include unregistered children), not to mention the #1 suicide rate for 8 years running in the OECD, #1 divorce rate, as well as high rates of death due to MVAs, as well as at least 10% of all women linked to the sex trade in some form. If you watch the Korean reality show on EMT's called 'Heart Is Beating - 심장이 뛴다' they regularly encounter incidences of suicide of young people, entire families, people from all age groups and walks of life. A fairly regular occurrence in Korea, in fact an average of 35 per day. This is price of success. This is price of the ultra-competitive society that is Korea. Korean students also ranked dead last in happiness in the OECD. These are sad realities that very few Koreans will talk about or even admit and even attack you for bringing up, but I as a Korean feel it is Koreans need to come to grips with. How is it that a modern country with less than half of the unemployment rate of most Westernized nations is so miserable? Korea ranks horribly on world happiness indexes. There is serious dysfunction and disconnect in Korean society which I hope will change soon, but Korea faces other serious issues like the the largest per capita population of seniors and the ever burdensome threat of war with the North. I honestly do not know how the future generations of Koreans will cope with these issues given the current state of society. If America were to ever pull out of Korea, the North would take over the South in a matter of days because people are so preoccupied with getting their kids through school, or boozing or cheating on their wives or scamming each other. I am doing my bi-annual trip there in a couple of weeks. What a mess of a country. I am blessed that my family emigrated to Canada when I was young and spared me from the misery of going through the school system there. That being said, me and my wife plan to someday adopt a child or two from Korea.

John ... you make some excellent points. I think that Korea’s mindset and values are antiquated. Human rights, children’s rights and women’s rights are nonexistent in Korea.

This is not a problem that exist in Korea alone...there are kids abandoned all over the world for many different reasons, but the ending remains...a baby who has no choice to pick who they get out of ...ends up on their own & unwelcomed. I commend the lady who choose to fight for her child even if her own family cuts her off.

Korean tradition places a high emphasis on family, and there is a huge stigma attached to a single mother with a child. This is very unfortunate and it will be a while before society changes. We always talk about the woman having to give up the child, but what about the father? After all, it takes two individuals to have a child, and it is always the woman who suffers, not the man. This is totally unfair, as the male should take responsibility for his actions. I guess sex education in middle school is a taboo subject as Korean society does not consider sex education a polite subject. This accounts for the high pregnancy rate among teenagers and because of the taboo on a single woman with a child, the woman invariably must abandon the child, which is a cruel act. Those who get adopted by foreigners are fortunate as they will be loved and cared for. Because of Korean society's irrational beliefs and customs, it is very, very, rare that a Korean would turn to adoption even if a couple is childless. This is unfortunate, but again it is very difficult to change society's beliefs. The high unwanted pregnancy rates could only be reduced with sex education and condoms. The father of the children should be held accountable for their actions in creating the child. It is totally unfair for the woman to bear the stigma of having an unwanted pregnancy. It does not appear that the government is taking enough action on abandoned babies as well as the high suicide rate, one of the highest in the world for such a small nation.

The father be held accountable? Well - I'd surely agree with you but the decision to give up the child is NOT the father's to make. The father has absolutely no right at all. All choices come down to the female. So... how to solve for this "responsibility" of the father while at the same time giving the father a say in weather or not the child is given up? I have a friend here in the USA... he's college educated and makes a good living. The girl wanted an abortion and he didn't. He wanted to raise the child and was ready for it. But, the woman was not done "playing" around and didn't want the responsibility so she killed the child. My buddy was devastated and had no decision in the matter.

for those "women"? from what I know human babies are not created without a man.

Then give the man as much of a right to say that he doesn't want the woman to give it up or have an abortion. Yes - it takes a man - but a man has no rights whereas the child is concerned. She can literally kill his child through an abortion but the man has NO say in the matter.

Why is it so freakin' expensive to adopt?
@anonymousdevildog1406
@anonymousdevildog1406 6 жыл бұрын
YES in Korea -YES. 20-35 thousand dollars and years of waiting and many many personal and family requirements to be considered eligible.

I wanted to adopt from Korea, my wife (Korean) and I (British-American) wanted a Korean sister to join our family and be a sister to the son we had together. But Korea has made laws so complicated, and expensive that we just decided not to even try.

It's almost like you didn't watch the video. The woman who couldn't get childcare, had to quit her job and whose in-laws threw them out, is a Christian. Seems like there are more than a few obstacles to adoption in S. Korean society.

does this have anything to do with south koreans obsession with the entertainment industry. Maybe trying to become a actresss or singer and abandoning babies. I know how popular the african copying entertainment industry is in south korea

And may I ask how do you know that for sure, thhat they had babies with men they barely knew? Ok they made a mistake....but why must society label them as if they are criminals, there are mothers who wants to be responsible for their mistakes, but it is sad that their own family disowns them and don't want to be a part of their lives because of that mistake. What happened to "blood is thicker than water"?
