A lot of spin in this story. Cue the sad music and loaded questions. This woman had physical suffering, all family far away. She said maybe if she had friends and no stress she would want to live. A country can't just give someone a bunch of friends. And even if they did have people sit with her every day there is no guarantee she would be happy. I would give anything to have this in my country, the U.S. Things are really messed up, I agree. If we gave everyone $35k a year and a rich social life - maybe Sweden does that?, yes maybe that would save some. Who even knows, but that is not our world. I wish it was. But what do we do with this world, not an imaginery one. I would love a socialist utopia. What if we never get one?

Rosina was my friend, and I saw her deteriorate over time, not having enough to eat and live with dignity. It's such a sad reality. The help she needed, including the meds and assistance due to disability weren't available. It was a lot of loneliness, being made to feel useless and a burden when asking for help. It was tragic, to say the least. I was with her the last night of her life till 2am.
@micgooflander957 ай бұрын
I'm glad Rosina had the right not to be forced to continue to suffer. Just forcing people to live does not solve the problem of loneliness, lack of benefits, inadequate access to medical care, etc. All you're doing when you force someone to live against their will (i.e. prevent them from accessing effective, risk-free and painless suicide methods through some channel - whether that be the healthcare system or any other) is punish that individual for the way that they've been failed by society. That cannot be the right answer. That cannot be the humane answer. Ultimately, each individual should have the right to choose whether they want to live; not be forced to serve as political chess pieces.

Many simply want their lives to be better, for more home care, better medical care and more social interaction. The first gentleman may have misunderstood, many people would be concerned, others seeing how worn down he seemed. Forgetting to return smiles with others signals far too much isolation. With terminal or intolerable conditions, at least 3 persons should certify approval,- a panel of three with members allotted (shuffled) to each case randomly,- made up of a lawyer or judge, a senior physician and a layperson. Pain relief training must be improved or have a dedicated unit in all bigger hospitals. Medicines can make a great deal of difference. Therapies need to be reviewed. Many retraumatise patients and some are vicarious for the therapist. Teaching coping systems and shaping moving into an improved future are most often a better route for non-terminal patients. That govts find bumping people off whose lives could have been turned around is a sad indictment of our society.
@Criticalthinker6057 ай бұрын
May Allah swt rest her soul. So heartbreaking to think that because of society's obsession with capitalism and money that the option of simply dying is put out there for those who are suffering rather than looking at the root issue and fixing it. Human life is worth more than that and yet here we are deciding which option is more 'cost-effective'. Shame. The Western claims of 'progressiveness' and 'humanitarians' are being exposed day by day.

A person with a medical condition shouldnt have to die cuz they are too poor to afford helping themselves. Canada has a lot of programs. But none are sufficiently funded. People with medical conditions literally struggle to not become homeless. The country is punishing the poor again. In my homecountry, u can get assisted death as well. I too know people who left our world this way. But it is stricter than Canada. Usually only when u are in deep pain the government will assist you. We luckily almost erased poverty in my country, so nobody asks for assisted death simply cuz they are too poor. That isnt the case in canada unfortunately. Canada somehow created an eat-or-get-eaten mentality like the US in the past 2 decades. There is a woman from toronto that was working full time, got intentionally coughed at during the pandemic, and now she has longcovid that makes it impossible for her to work fulltime to pay her bills. She is askin the government now to help her die. And she shouldnt have to just cuz the government keeps kicking the bucket to the less wealthy or more vulnerable folks. Most of these folks wanna live but poverty makes it hard. Nice day

Can we please please PLEASE stop calling this Dying With Dignity! There is nothing about this process that is dignified. It is government coerced death. It is a cost savings to our healthcare system. They don't care if you live in the deepest poverty imaginable - the government supports for disabled are about $1200 a month. But average rent in our nation is about double that, and due to exploding population growth (our government allows over a million newcomers a year in international students and immigration). This is a goldmine for landlords who are jacking prices up every chance they get. This is displacing our disabled and senior population. It increases demand on a healthcare system that is already buckling due to aging infrastructure. Our government knows this and is signing off on expanded MAiD to allow for an out due to suffering caused by disability + poverty. They say there are safeguards to prevent it - but talk to those in the disability community and they say they are feeling coerced. Many have of us now have to choose between medical, housing and food to survive. The word that comes to mind is EUGENICS. They are calling it Dying with Dignity but really the focus should be Living with Dignity. The only hope I see is a long promised Canada Disability Benefit by the federal government. Unfortunately this has been delayed for over 3 years. During the pandemic our Liberal leaders provided CERB, an emergency relief benefit to working individuals. Those with disability received nothing! So now the cost of food and housing has almost doubled and those without money, those suffering due to medical conditions get MAiD. Thanks for nothing Canada! Oh, and if you are thinking to move here expecting a Canadian dream .. really think again. Canada is not as advertised.

Forcing people to live in pain (mental or physical) against their will does nothing to solve the "living with dignity" issue. All it does is punish those at the bottom for the fact that they've been failed by society. People should ALWAYS have had the right to access effective suicide methods; as there is no autonomy in life without the right to opt out of living without the government interfering with that choice. If not for paternalistic suicide prevention schemes; then we would not be needing the government to act as the gatekeeper for who is allowed to avail themselves of MAID. By opposing MAID, all you are doing is building a prison for yourself, and for everyone else, and inviting the government to throw away the key. You aren't adding any extra options, or improving the options available. You're just striving to take away an option that you might personally be desperate for in the future. Meanwhile, all of your non-disabled 'allies' will forget all about your suffering once MAID has been seen off; and your plight will be once again out of sight and out of mind. Because the media (including Al Jazeera and the correspondent for this piece) is only willing to pretend to care about your plight in as far as they can use it to advance their illiberal agenda against bodily autonomy.

It takes years to get a family doctor in Canada, and that's if you can get on a waitlist. However, if you want to die, they can have you dead in 3 months. No family doctor required, they'll even send the experts to access you in your home. I used to be for assisted suicide. Now I'm not too sure. We hit the ' 'slippery slope' at full speed.

This makes me ashamed to be Canadian. From the "Cost Estimate for Bill C-7 Medical Assistance in Dying" produced by the Parliamentary Budge Office in 2020 . " The cost of administering MAID is estimated at $4.4 million, and thus, the net reduction in health care costs for provincial governments will amount to $62.0 million." How have we gone so far astray from the vision of great men like Tommy Douglas?
@powerpunch1805 ай бұрын
Tommy Douglas was a eugenicist who supported sterilization of people with mental disabilities in his Master's thesis called "The Problems of the Subnormal Family". From his Wikipedia article: "The thesis proposed a system that would have required couples seeking to marry to be certified as mentally and morally fit. Those deemed to be "subnormal", because of low intelligence, moral laxity, or venereal disease would be sent to state farms or camps, while those judged to be mentally defective or incurably diseased would be sterilized."
@lauralmiles50387 ай бұрын
Heartbreaking. I feel traumatized and shame on the Canadian governments. People with disabilities are treated absolutely inhumanely by provincial and federal governments. Yes, money CAN buy happiness in terms of access to life sustaining resources and opportunities for raising quality of life. To give assisted dying before providing a reasonable level of livable income, shows governments don't care, doctors don't care, Canadians don't care and they're finding eugenic solutions, preferable positions. It didn't have to be this way. 'They' (discriminatory ableists) want it this way and keep it status quo. #PovertyReductionStolen People who make it this way do see assisted suicide as something fitting less valuable citizens, something not even worth attempted remedy and even something profitable. I read that 1/3 of Canada thinks poverty alone should make a person eligible for assisted medical suicide. My heart goes out to everyone who's been struggling to live and thrive, without fair governmental support. #DERB "Poverty is the worst form of violence"-- Mahatma Gandhi

Option 1: living with mental illness Option 2: death Option 3: being at minimum properly cared for with dignity and omitting poverty and food scarcity and homelessness, or best case scenario, cured isn't an option. It's a wish, a dream, a fantasy. Making people wait for that, when it's not even in the works on any level, is cruel. The suffering is real, and it's now. Other countries have found incredibly appropriate ways to care for, house, feed, give dignity to those with disabilities so the answers are mostly available. It's government and greedy corporations choosing profits over people or wasting tax dollars or starving our Healthcare system of funding. Money is the God that is worshipped in all of North America over anything else. It is humanmade, and it is humankilling. To those corporations and government officials, my message is: just because you can, doesn't mean you should! Find your moral compass and do better. People before profits, always, as a bare minimum for living standards.

Obviously, they have to be regulated to some degree. But the same drugs that are used to euthanize pets are exactly the same that people want who are suffering.. the drugs exist, they are available, we are just not allowing humans to use them. That’s the government. So I’m not saying the government should do anything they should just step out of the way and let the manufacturers of these drugs sell them at least two medical professionals who can prescribe them.

Oh that poor chap at the beginning of the video. I relate to everything he has said and I have nothing but compassion and empathy for him. For me it wasn't always this way, but it progressed from minor issues to severe depressive episodes that crippled me. When the only people you know and your only support system give up on you, because it's too much hassle for them, the damage can be brutal. It's bad enough being severely depressed, only to be faced with the additional pain of losing everything and feeling you don't matter. This makes it much much harder to pull out of severe episodes, as there's no one rooting for you to remind you that you matter, and all you have is the inner critic reminding you that you are worthless. This is the most dangerous time when it comes to making decisions as there is no one to support objectivity. When you feel no one would care or notice if you didn't exist, the chances of taking this maid options are high. If it had been available in my country, I would definitely have availed of this program as a means to escape. While I agree with the freedom of choice about certain situations, mental health is tricky and too much of a risk. No one should feel they have no other options due to loneliness, or having no human connections to remind them they are loved and their lives are precious, they are precious and someone cares for them to help them get through the darkness 🫂

Most people feel entitled to continue gaining more from the world, while most people who are dreadfully affected by mental health and real barriers in life are expected to suffer. Suffer by being isolated, loving near destitute and well below poverty line, no dignity. They are selfless. They realize the burden on themselves and the greater society. The see that there is no real support. There is no real will in government and the economy to really desire to help people have their basic needs met. The system expects those under privileged to all scramble and fight over scraps! The world makes it illegal to be homeless and rough sleeping. It's illegal to sleep out there if you're homeless. But it's legal to have up to a certain. Amount of intoxication while you operate a vehicle ! It's OK to consume alcohol every weekend at a BBQ until you're passed put wasted and develop lover disease and rely on the Healthcare system for life and drain resources It's OK to be a drain that way. But society says you're a drain. If you're on welfare? People who are forced to love below their means ?! The world is sadistic and prefers people to have dirty end of life rather than medically assisted and dignified end of life. It's not the individuals right? That's saying we don't truly have autonomy over ourselves.

I was in prison once, and each housing unit, had three pods that surrounded an inner guard tower. We were all getting ready for “movement” to the chow hall for dinner. At the very same time, an inmate in a pod directly across from mine, decided to announce he was going to kill himself by jumping off the third tier. Prison can really desensitize a a person, and instead of showing sympathy and concern, everyone, it seemed, had the attitude of “Hurry up and jump already”. “We’re fucking HUNGRY, and you’re holding up the show”
@swankyb94547 ай бұрын
I experienced something similar in prison. One of the inmates in my pod of about 90 people had managed to hang himself by using a sheet and tying it to the end of the bunkbed and just sitting down. The entire pod knew he was hanging there dead but wanted to make sure the guards didnt find him until breakfast was served. Prison reduces people to the most base, savage instincts. Things like caring, loyalty, friendship,empathy are considered weak and you cant survive long in there with that mindset.
