Tucked away within Toronto’s inner city is a small enclave known as "Little Tibet".
Located in the Parkdale neighbourhood, the restaurants here are famous for delicious Tibetan dumplings known as momos.
Parkdale is also home to one of the largest concentrations of Tibetans outside Asia, stemming from the 1970s when Tibetan refugees flocked to Canada. The community has thrived here, establishing Little Tibet’s reputation as a food mecca and setting up a cultural centre.
But today, rapid gentrification and Toronto’s sky-high rents threaten the area’s unique social fabric. Amid China's increasing global influence, the Tibetan community is striving to hold on to its past and maintain its traditions in an adopted land.
Explore Little Tibet and meet an immigrant community working to preserve its identity in this episode of A Sense of Community, a four-part series about unique neighbourhoods around the world and the challenges they face.

thanks for showing what is the consequence of America State-funded separatism looks like after 50 years. more than 100,000 Tibetans live a hard live aournd India within a small area, only a few lucky ones are chosen to live in western countries to demonstrate how well they are treated. comparing the tibetan lives in India, most of the tibetans in Tibet are like living in heaven. even though tibet has be part of China during yuan and qing dynasty, the biased media still think China invaded Tibet. fine, but how about Canada killed almost all the earliest residents and occupied their land? Al Jazeera has no ball to lay a finger on this, not to say ask the invaders to leave.

I’m a Canadian and am so grateful for all the different cultures and communities that have come and made Canada their home. These people have made Canada so much more greater and as a Canadian I feel indebted to them. My hope is that we as Canadians continue to be a welcoming place for the displaced and repressed brothers and sisters of the world. Together, we become one.

Tibet lost its independence ever since becoming part of China’s Yuan Dynasty. Its high ranking governors need to be entitled by Central Government of China. Also, the title Dalai, meaning ocean in Mongolian, was given by Altan Khan, who was a Prince of China’s Ming Dynasty.

I lived in Parkdale a few years. While I remember a couple Tibetan shops and a Buddhist temple. . I didn't know the Tibetan community in Toronto was one of the biggest globally. I assume outside of Tibet the biggest community is in India or Nepal. . . I hope the CCP occupation of Tibet will end in our lifetimes! Glad you are keeping your culture and spiritual life alive!

During the serfdom days in Tibet, people's skulls were taken out to make ritual artifacts, and girls' skin was cut off to make Thangkas. Would you like this kind of life? I really hope that one day you can go to see the present Tibet instead of talking nonsense.

@@user-vn1bg4uj9x during the reign of Mao in China millions died of starvation in big part due to his stupid policies..there was cannibalism, there was family members denouncing and attacking each other...students denouncing and attacking their teachers mass forced abortions..etc.. we still have the same CCP regime in control of China..Do you want to go back to the days of Mao? Would you really want this type of life?

@@MrTynanDraper First of all, please answer my question directly, why do you avoid the tragic fate of Tibetan serfdom farmers? What Mao did wrong is true, we have correct it. So you can see modern China so prosperous, there is no point in whitewashing the past of Tibet. As a Tibetan, have you ever been to Tibet? Have you ever heard the voice of the real Tibetan people? When I went to Tibet as a volunteer teacher, the people in Tibet, even the grandfathers and grandmothers, said that their lives had improved a lot. So, don't take a biased view of the problem. Your ideas are just wishful thinking and will not help solve the problem.

@@MrTynanDraper By the way, your logic is wrong. It's like when your dad wronged you and then beat you, you're not gonna talk to your dad for the rest of your life? Are you going to kill your father? I'm afraid not! After all, your father raised you, too. Having the opportunity to see serf museums and modern Tibet, which is honestly much more prosperous than your communities in Canada, I'm sure your mind will change.

@@user-vn1bg4uj9x You read some CCP propaganda about how they "liberated the savages in a CCP funded museum".. Good for you! If I want to know about Tibet I will ask Tibetans. .if I want to know about Xinjiang Uyghers I will talk to the Uyghurs. . I will not listen to a brainwashed Chinese Nationalist like yourself. I have not been to Tibet because it is occupied by the CCP regime and they will not allow foreigners and especially foreign journalists into Tibet. except on North Korean style heavily controlled and policed special group excursions. . because their is a small chance they might find some Tibetans who are not afraid to speak out. . Lhasa has been turned into a CCP "Disneyland" for Chinese tourists who can come directly by train now and be educated with the pro CCP retelling of history.

Beautiful community, beautiful people. I cannot say the same about my wretched kind or the horrible community that my school was in. Probably could have done better if my father had chose a multicultral, welcoming-accepting public school, versus the chinese/portuguese slow cooker.
Why is anti-immigration sentiment on the rise in Canada?
