My late husband was a young man from Buenos Aires who was in the merchant marine in the late 40's. He was in Haifa in 1949 and has pictures of bombed Arab villages with "no trespassing" signs written in Arabic. He knew that the villages were bombed to prevent Palestinians from returning and he also told me that Begin and the Stern gang had murdered the Swedish UN Mediator. My husband became an American citizen but always hated the fact that this country supported Israel with so much $$. I was a lot younger than my husband and ignorant of the historical facts that have led to the present day humanitarian catastrophe. I really appreciate all your documentaries including this one which is filling in the missing pieces of history that my husband understood and I did not.

Also, check out Raoul Wallenberg, another rich swedish guy who rescued people in the second world war. I watched this part (and will watch the next soon) in full awareness of the barbarities being perpetrated in Gaza by the Zionists and, to a much lesser extent, by the Hamas resistance: I couldn't help thinking: Could it not have been possible for the relevant UN agencies, the Red Cross, the Red Crescent, Amnesty International, B'Tselem and other similar organizations to negotiate with the Israeli military and the Hamas, as well as with the US govt., and with , a humanitarian relief operation along the lines of what the Count organized, with the objective of removing as many of the non-combatants out of danger as possible? Of course, the numbers the Count had to deal with were much smaller than the people that would have needed relief in Gaza. But surely the effort would have been worth it?

Following the shooting, all four members of the hit team made it to the religious community of Shaarei Pina, where they hid among local Haredi sympathizers(Hamas in Gaza too). After a few days in hiding, they fled to Tel Aviv in the back of a furniture truck. Lehi leaders initially denied responsibility for the attack, only later, (after the stature of limitations had expired) did they admit responsibility for the killings. INVESTIGATION. At first, the terrorist organization was forcibly disarmed and many of its members were arrested, but nobody was charged with the murders. The Israel Police, along with the military police (IDF) and security services (Mossad), all claimed to have investigated the assassination, but failed to identify any of the participants in the assassination, and the case was eventually closed without any of the perpetrators having been identified... (anyone surprised?) It has been suggested that the reasons for the failure of the investigation were poor coordination between these agencies, (9-11 anyone?) which resulted in information that may have assisted the police not being turned over to them, and the lack of proficiency among police officers and investigators in the early days of the Israel Police (a failure of imagination). The (very cold) murder case was identified as 148/48 in Israeli police records. Yellin-Mor and another Lehi member, Mattityahu Shmulevitz, were charged with belonging to a terrorist organization. They were found guilty but were immediately released and pardoned (I'm shocked). Yellin-Mor had meanwhile been elected to the first Knesset. Betty Knut-Lazarus, a Lehi militant, and the granddaughter of composer Alexander Scriabin, was also imprisoned for being allegedly involved in the killing, before being subsequently released. Years later, Cohen's role was uncovered by David Ben-Gurion's biographer Michael Bar Zohar, while Cohen was working as Ben-Gurion's personal bodyguard. The first public admission of Lehi's role in the killing was made on the anniversary of the assassination in 1977. The statute of limitations for the murder had expired in 1971. In 1988, two years after Cohen's death, Zettler and Makover publicly confessed their role in the assassination and confirmed that Cohen had killed Bernadotte. The weapon which was used in the assassination, an MP 40, serial number 2581 (was said to have been lost), but was found in 2018 (you would never guess where): in the Heritage house of the Israel Police, (from Wikipedia, under Folke Bernadotte)

Good report, raised many questions, not answered by the domentary. This is looking back to 1948 so questions about his decisions and actions in World War 2 would be appropriate to prevent jumping to conclusions. The action that followed were not appropriate based upon thinking in 2023. But do we have all the information. So many questions to which we are not provided with answers. This took place before I was Born. Many people around me were children and would not have any decisions to make. How can we look through the eyes of those making decisions back in 1948? Mercy to the survivors from both sides in 1948.

The moment Arab Israeli war started and won by Israel the Jews gained an upper hand which lead to the situation of the paleatinians now. So who is to blame for their predicament ? The Arabs wage the war can't accept the UN resolution on the creation of Israel, Arab lost and ofcourse you know what will happen if you lost.
