Many of the chemicals used contain not alkali elements, but alkaline elements, a good video.

yes the HCL is there to simply clean the wire from any impurities that may have attached themselves onto the wire from either previous experiments or just contaminants from air etc.......also washing with it with Deionized water afterward will also help.

"I'd guess," not "I'd guess at." But yes, dousing the flaming loop (platinum wire) and then burning it over a flame cleans it of any prior chemical.
