No, please don't stop! From experience I can tell you that it would probably not make you happy. As soon as you read something because you feel like you should, reading itself becomes a burden and that's not how we should spend our precious free time ♡

Thanks guys. There really is no "level" when it comes to reading and I guess I just get more swept up in lower "grade level" recommendations. Kids these days have so many great books to read and I don't wanna have missed out on any of them. LOL. Maybe someday in the future, I'll read more biographical and historical fictions but for now, I'm gonna stick with fairytail retellings like the Grimm Sisters and adventures I've never thought possible.

Jack your smile is infectious as you talk about a subject you truly love. That is a wonderful thing to see. Although I did not read 100 books in 2019, a grand goal for sure, I was plenty surprised that as you went through each title I ticked off all those I have personally already read myself and was super pleased (within myself) that the total count was well over 70!! Grant it, MANY of them were required reading in my American High School (Years 10 - 13 here), but I always loved English (even though I am a scientist by nature and education/experience) and so read voraciously through both High School, undergraduate and graduate school and the only thing that slowed me down was having children. That being said, we are all voracious readers in the family and I have read (or they have read on their own) MANY of the books you listed to the children already as well as we keep a well stocked children’s library in the home. I recently tried to turn them on to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which along with Tom Sawyer, I would also give 5 stars, but they were IMMEDIATELY thrown off by the use of the N word within the first few pages. Although I tried to explain they had to understand the time period in which the book was written (and, as you know, we are a family of mixed race colour), but they were having ABSOLUTELY NONE of it!! 😇. They even made me skip over the word “stupid,” in Harry Potter because they will not (and have been raised) never to use or tolerate derogatory language. So, instead, we read A Wrinkle In Time, which they loved - the recent movie is a horrible interpretation - and as we have just finished the BBC first series of His Dark Materials, it is next up (our usual house rule is you must read it before watching it but, as I am American of a much older age, I didn’t know the series well and wanted to find out about it by watching first - a brilliant series it was as well. We hope you make it to 115 this year! The eldest child is a speed reader and could likely give you a run for your money!!! He read the entire Hunger Games in 3 days and American Gods in three sittings! It’s his FAVOURITE book of 2019 as well. He’s currently reading Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad while vacationing abroad. We do love to read. Have fun! 🌹

Pickled Rick are you insinuating that it’s unrealistic for “underage” (underage is in quotes because the book is based in an ancient culture wholly different from our own, especially in terms of age of majority) people to have sex? If so…I have quite a bit of news for you and I’m sorry your high school experience was so boring. Also, the book is from Patroclus’ POV so it’s impossible to know what Achilles is feeling but him feeling Thetis’ presence is never even vaguely commented on in the novel.

Sethy Blairo We’re talking about a story which Miller is RETELLING. I don’t know why she felt that scene was necessary. Being a Classicist, it was just weird and strays too far away from what these characters are imo. Why use these canonical characters in the first place? Really weird.

My Goodreads goal this year is 26 books. I really enjoy reading but sometimes you just have to set priorities. Also everybody has a different reading pace as well. I take quite a long time reading English books simply for the fact I am not a native speaker. But I still find the experience of reading a work in its original form valuable enough to justify reading fewer books than I would have had I read them in my mother tongue. Highly commend all the people that read as much as him though because it takes true devotion to do that.

Nice to see that the majority of these are classics. It is even harder to read those. Kudos!

I would 100% recommend The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa- even though it was super readable it also managed to haunt me for weeks afterwards. It was only translated into English recently and I'm so glad I picked it up in Waterstones!

- The Corpse Washer by Sinan Antoon (set in iraq) - The Collaborator by Mirza Waheed (set in Kashmir) - Men in the Sun by Ghassan Kanafani (follows the lives of a group of Palestinian men living in refugee camps & it's not a long book. Very famous & moving) - Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector (set in Brazil)

How do you read poems? I mean things like whether you leave some time to contemplate, or whether you reread them before moving on to the next one.

Some constructive criticism, (in case you plan to do this vdeo again next year) Sometimes it was a bit difficult to see your rating, especially when it was 4 or 5 stars, and especially when you went quickly from one book to the next, because I almost had to count to distinguish between the amount of stars. So I think it would be more efficient if you always had five stars in total, and you just filled in the amount of stars you gave to each book, and left the remaining stars empty. So kind of like how you can see the star ratings on goodreads. Otherwise it's a really impressive list, as an english major myself I read a lot of these as well, and I'm also aiming to read 100 books next year!

If you haven’t read it already, a really interesting and unique book is ‘Norwegian Wood’ by Haruki Murakami. Not something I would have ordinarily read (or even heard of) but it was a recommendation from my English teacher, who is obsessed with Japan and Japanese culture. It’s a coming-of-age story (of sorts) but it’s set in Japan and has an engaging narrative - there’s a lot of underlying themes as well like mental health, loss, identity etc - albeit a bit slow at the start and slightly repetitive at times. A great read though if you’re looking for something a bit different!

I read a book called the one memory of flora banks which I read in 5 hours purely because I couldn't put it down which is not like me at all as I'm dyslexic and find reading hard but this book was good and I absolutely love it

The Last Man by Mary Shelley. Bit of a slow start but really picks up rapidly and is such a beautiful insight into her relationship with Lord Byron and Percy as she wrote it in memoriam of them, and based characters off of them

I’m so glad you loved This is going to hurt! Amazing book. If you get a chance, I recommend When breath becomes air. Nothing in common except their both doctors. A beautiful and very short book about the meaning of life and death, when faced with your own mortality. Happy new year!
