With the aging dinosaurs on that team, their was not much more Messi or griezmann could have done. Griezmanns salary was very high so it was easy to blame him for their struggles. They lost games because busquettes and Pique were massive liabilities whenever Barca lost the ball. Small teams were tearing them apart on counters.

You are right, I was one of them but the reality was that Barça in those times didn't have any project, majority of players were older and without any idea of play, that team depended on individualities and the dressing room was a problem
