The author Frank Herbert in an interview said that his Arab friends considered the book more than a work of fiction. The movie actually downplays the elements of Islam in the book in many ways, which is disappointing. It's also based on Sabres of Paradise which was a book about Imam Shamyl, a Muslim leader who led a war against the Russian empire in the Caucuses. The odd metacommentary is the book is written semi as a historical lesson for westerners on how to combat Soviet foreign policy and many westerners at the time (19th century) wanted to fund Shamyl as a proxy warrior against Russian imperial expansion (in the same way the Atriedes want to use the Fremen in their proxy war against the Harkonnens and the Emperor).

If you liked Young Royals I think you’d really love Skam, the original Norwegian version. The cast feels like very real awkward teenagers, it’s funny without trying too hard and season three has a lot (if not more) of the yearning and angst that Young Royals has.

I 100% get how Poor Things made people feel uncomfortable and why it wasn't their cup of tea. I found it a very raw and taboo movie. Calling this a feminist movie because it tells the story of a woman and has sex is driving me crazy. It is not a feminist movie, It's a movie about the human experience, it is a film that has many phenomenological and existential concerns and deals with very taboo topics. What I will say is that I believe that falling in the "taboo topic trap" as a viewer makes a viewer weak...? What I mean by that is that I saw a lot of people critisizing the movie for many superficial and meretricious reasons. Also for what I've seen (and Hannah you have actually ben an exeption to that) is that people not liking this film for all those superficial taboo reasons actually critisize the ones that do? I think art is very important to be discussed and calling people out for liking a movie just because you don't agree with the way it explores sexuality and taboo topics is kinda dumb sorry-not-sorry. Have a discussion like an adult so that both parties of an argument can grow. All the love!!

I agree with you, I loved Poor Things for many reasons, one including her newfound desires. I’ve always said I’m a person who loves taboo books and movies, and I didn’t feel that way until I lived a taboo life myself. I think it’s okay to love a movie just because it’s taboo and Emma stone is in it. And beautiful Mark 😂❤️ it’s a great mixture of eerie, artistic, confusion, celebration, and perf soundtrack!

Film editor here. You and I have very different tastes it seems. Spoilers. Also, I'm only gonna talk about last years' movies that I've watched, not the others. Saltburn- I do not get the hype. I agree more with Broey Deschanel on this one than you. I liked it overall, but it did feel like a cross between a dulled-down version of Pasolini's Teorama and, of course, Ripley (both the book and the movie version). May December- Absolutely loved it. From the hot dog line to the "father-to-son" dialogue on the rooftop, it was some of the funniest kino this whole year. This is probably Haynes' funniest movie. I shock-laughed so many times. The Holdovers- A pleasant Christmas movie, lacking the ferocity of Payne's first collab with Giamatti. Poor Things- A nice coming-of-age drama told in a Shelley-punk format. I loved it. Vehemently disagree with you on Stone's Oscar. This is the most demanding role in terms of physical comedy that she has ever had. In some scenes, she seems to be channelling Chaplin. Loved her in this. The question of "Is X feminist?" discourse is poison for me (I agree with Lindsay Ellis that that question should be destroyed. Movies cannot be feminist. Feminism is a lens of analysis. A piece of art cannot be feminist or anti-feminist or whatever. Same goes for Marxist, or whatever -ist there is). Past Lives- Agree with you mostly. This is the best movie on your list for me. As Film Crit Hulk says, dramatic clarity is so rare to see these days. So it's good to see it done so well that a shot of two characters standing apart on a pavement, waiting for a cab, can feel so incredibly alive. Song is a master at her new craft Anatomy of a Fall- Agree with you on this one. Incredible turn from Triet and Huller. But the most scarring moments for me are a few horrifying images constructed from the sense-memory of a child. IYKYK. Dune 2- Meh, it's alright. Villenueve has never been for me. I still think Enemy is his best work. Oppenheimer- It's mostly because of Jennifer Lame's editing that this works so well. It's so thinly held together, like a single egg holds an entire baked pie crust together. Without Lame, this would have turned into a pile of incomprehensible nonsense. The editing turns this into a fever dream floating on a river of guilt and the horrifying need to technologically progress ourselves. Maestro- Disagree with you on Bradley but also disagree on this movie lol. I loved A Star is Born and will remember those two cuts near the end (IYKYK) for a long time. This movie was not remotely well directed, and the editing was at times bizzarre. There is actual connective tissue and causation missing between conflicts and resolution of those conflicts sometimes, to the point where it doesn't feel finished. How Cooper came up with this after A Star is Born is a mystery. Killers of the Flower Moon- Incredible for me. Scorsese's humility and the willingness to learn new things put this right up there with the greatest oil epics like There Will Be Blood or Jarhead. Also it's so clear how hard he's been trying to get The Searchers out of his system and he's done it now, hopefully. Thelma Schoonmaker remains the greatest editor alive. This should've won Best Picture, American Fiction- Oscar-bait seems to be evolving, because I would definitely consider this to be one. A terrible adaptation of a book whose best moments only make sense in the book, because they're playing with literary form. Most of the satire is completely gone. If you want a version of this that doesn't feel as toothless and afraid to offend the same white liberal demographic that it is trying to criticize, watch Spike Lee's Bamboozled. The Zone of Interest- The world's first Hannah Arendt movie, perhaps? The two temporal cuts near the end are devastating. There are exactly two hilarious moments in this movie (one involving a letter and another is the last two shots of the film) and they both land perfectly. Loved this one. Glazer has always directed every genre of movie like an alien, like he's never watched any other film from that genre. Under the Skin, Birth and Sexy Beast are all testament to that. Additional movie recs from 2023 A.V. Rockwell's A Thousand And One, D. Smith's Kokomo City, Albert Serra's Pacifiction, Tran Anh Hung's The Taste of Things, Wes Anderson's Roald Dahl short films, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, Alice Rohrwacher's La Chimera, Victor Erice's Close Your Eyes. Kitty Green's The Royal Hotel, Koji Fukada's Love Life.

I enjoyed “Poor Things.” It was pretty, funny, weird, and entertaining. However, I don’t think it can be wholeheartedly labeled as feminist. There are certainly feminist themes (sexual liberation, female autonomy, etc.), but none that I think are explored in an effectively feminist way. Most definitely, it suffered from the male gaze.

Thanks for the great recs! I really feel like I've stopped watching tv/movies since a few years. Like I watch 1 or 2 things a year haha So this was really helpful! 💖 I would also totally eat up a video of you recommending us some kdramas 🫢 just saying... ❤❤

you should definitely watch Fellow Travelers if you’re in the mood for a show to rip your heart out and stomp it, my best friend and I were screaming at the TV and sobbing by the end of it. it was so so so well done, so much nuance, a beautiful yet heartbreaking story with great acting!

I really liked the bear. I think it was the first time I saw a show that depicted so well anxiety, that sticky feeling you can’t shake off. I also spotted references to a French movie « la haine « when Richie makes faces in front of his mirror. I am not American so at first I thought they were in New York and some things were kind of enigmatic to me but it was interesting to watch !

I understand that it’s a gothic horror and everything and I love that movie too, but you saying that “they always have to incorporate incest” and then talking about how much you enjoyed crimson peak was so funny to me

All of Us Strangers will break your heart and mend it and break it again. the cast is tiny, just Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, and two actors playing parents, so it almost feels like a stage production at times. I'm currently grieving my mother and found it so validating.

Hannah... your taste is impecable, I also didn't like poor things i hated watching it and you described perfectly my thoughts about the whole discourse online. I also loved anatomy of a fall, it was also my top pick for the oscars, sandra huller was amazing, i need more of her and justine triet. I also agree that young royals had the perfect ending omg.

Hannah omg thank you for validating me with Poor Things!! I was so sick of people saying I didn’t have media literacy for absolutely hating it. To me it felt like Yorgos Lathimos the director didn’t care to learn about a woman’s anatomy or autonomy and just wanted aesthetically pleasing shots and that was very apparent through certain scenes which was very disappointing since Emma Stone was one of the main producers but I digress. If you like small town K-Dramas and you haven’t seen it already I highly recommend Summer Strike. The main male lead is an introverted librarian.

I'm so happy to see some Crimson Peak love! I feel like the marketing really let it down because people expect horror with a side of gothic, but it was far more gothic with a side of horror, to put it simply. It really is a hauntingly beautiful movie, and the detail GDT put into it was astounding.

Love Atonement, it's very heartbreaking, but one of the most aesthetically pleasing movies I've watched. The Bear is also very good and obviously Dune is fantastic. If you haven't seen them yet, I would recommend Outlander, one of the best series ever!! The Queens Gambit, Desperate Housewives (classic) and Movies I looove Brooklyn, I don't know how many times I watched it, it's just beautiful :)

Since you said you weren't really a movie watcher until this year, I have a rec: I think you'd really like The Fall (2006) with Lee Pace (directed by Tarsem Singh). It's a fantastical story about storytelling, and it's so emotional and beautiful. It's also the most visually stunning movie I've ever seen in my life!! Highly highly recommend.

when i first saw poor things i was doing a unit on frankenstein for my lit class and we were reading it through a feminist lens so i LOVED poor things. i ate it up and i adore it. but if you dont like it, its certainly not because you “didnt get it” or something. i can see how someone could do a feminist reading of it but i dont think it is a ‘feminist film’. its a divisive movie and i totally get why you didnt like it.
