You are so right about the first one. I didn't even realise the links to how to train your dragon. However there are two differences. For instance Gruff isn't as playful as Toothless and he's the only one of his kind.

Yeah, I know, but the general idea of “lets kill this monster that the main character is friends with/keeping as a pet” is similar to the dynamic of the Vikings and Hiccup
