Barbados Cherry is a small, tasty, very nutritious tropical fruit that is native to the American Tropics including the West Indies, Central America, and parts of Mexico and South America. Today it is grown in many parts of the tropical world and known by many names including Acerola, Jamaican Cherry, West Indian Cherry and Wild Cherry.

Here in aruba we have alot of them , we call them shimaruku .. i have 1 for over 40 years and im 34 now .. anytime when your sick or for just a sweet snack.. this fruit will come handy

I have 2 acerola trees in New England. One I brought from PR the other in a NY nursery. They respond well to banana leaf fertilizer (banana peel in water for one day the feed the tree)....my acerolas are sweet and have a pleasant taste; much like the fruit in PR....

I grew up eating them and I didn't know they were called Barbados cherry. I know them as you mentioned in the description as acerola. Love the juice and the jelly. Soooo good.

Thank you for your kind reply. I will try to find one ASAP. I USE OLD FASHIONED 9 VOLT CLEAR WHITE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS UNDER A FROST BLANKET. RAISES TEMP 1-15 DEGREES. I USE PAPER CLAMPS 3" from amazon. No rust. Great in high winds and jumping squirrels. When in doubt I go for a good layer of black gold compost with lots of worms. Even a small harvest is a joy forever. I also encourage a micro climate by planting a wind break with other shrubbery etc. Isn't gardening AWSOME. BLESSINGS LINDA. IM NEXT TO CRYSTAL RIVER.

hi Chris, wanted to grow some and did a search and was so happy to see a video from you and of course that's the one I went to! My fruit punch finally started pushing out new growth! Did squat all spring but we recently had a heat wave and that seemed to have woken it up. I think I got rid of the anthracnose as well :)

It’s worth sharing that indoor container grown plants are even more susceptible to wind damage. It’s worth giving them some support if you move them outdoors seasonally.

Great, thorough, video! Thank you. Do you have some suggestions on seed germination? I have 6 bushes currently. One bush has never bloomed (or fruited obviously) even though it gets the same care and lighting as all the others. Is there something I can do to get it snapped into production?

I have two I bought from Home depot here in Florida two years ago (zone 9) I paid about $70 each., After planting I watered them frequently for 3 or 4 months , now, not so much, I got about 4Lbs of fruit the first season . I'm thinking of propagating some more out of them next year. Too much pit v flesh for me to be bothered to eat them fresh, but I'm going to make wine out of them. I would recommend it as an easy and attractive tree. The birds love them.

I found mine at a tropical nursery in Phoenix for $45 and it was a 3 gallon. That’s good to know sometimes Home Depot sells them.

I grow them here in north Florida and don't protect them. Mine grow fine and we get lots of delicious fruits from them. I have them with protection on the north side.

@@kevinsaint20 Mine are actually Surinam Cherries not Barbados. I was mistaken. The Suriname are very sweet when allowed to ripen. My Barbados got knocked back when we got to 18 degrees here two mornings in a row. The stems are still green so I believe it will come back. Hope it fruits.

Great video! I have a tree in the backyard and it’s a heavy producer. I do have a problem with stink bugs on the fruits though. Any idea how to deal with the critters? Thanks in advance!

we don't seem to have much of a problem with them. I've heard that mulberry trees attract the insect, and then the stink bug switched to mango in the off season (for mulberries). There are other fruit that also attract the bug.

There is a tree home. They are indeed delicious and help to cure cold. We trim them daily because their branches are at times invasive.

I'm guessing green ones would give you a stomach ache more quickly than ripe ones would, but you would get more Vitamin C

The green ones are ok to eat but they have no taste and no the seeds are not poisonious i grew up eating them here in barbados and i love them

The green ones have more vitamin C and if I'm not mistaken the reason why they become sweeter when the fruit ripens is because the vitamin C (sour taste) is converted to sugar. It's the opposite of what happens in the liver of many animals. Animals that can produce vitamin C convert sugar into vitamin C in their liver.

Of the new releases... Harvest Moon is in the early part of late season, as is Little Gem and Honey Kiss. Orange Essence is late season

No, the seeds are winged, and the fruit is softer than northern cherries. This fruit makes great juice

We used to have 3 of these in the backyard in Dominican Republic, one of those produced tons of fruits, some of them were almost dark purple in color. The leaves can cause rashes on body.

I live between Ocala and Gainesville, we can even go down to 17-20 at rare nights. Mine are several years now in large pots. I tent cover them with blankets held in place with clothespins and sometimes a large sheet of plastic over that. They do fine. My fruit yield is pretty small, I am trying to find out how to fertilize them organically. I love the flavor and healthy aspect.

I see that your fruit has small holes on it did you see if anything was moving inside. I tried a similar berry to this and when I bit into it I saw something moving and I’m assuming it was a fruit fly that laid it’s egg and since the fruit has thin skin it’s the perfect place

I live in puerto rico and I have two of these trees growing in my yard. Both of them have a fungus growing on the underside of the leaf. What would you recommend for treatment? Applecider Vinegar?

that might help. vinegar can help with fungus. Some kinds of soap can be helpful. Also hydrogen peroxide. more conventional treatments include sulfur and copper sprays

How long on average does the fruit (cherry) take to develop once the tree has Blossomed. I just planted two tree's about a month ago and one has blossoms now. I bought the tree's from a nursery and I believe they were Air-Layered.

I'm looking into getting something similar to this whether it's the Surinam cherry, barbados cherry or something else. The thing making me hold off from the Surinam is comments about a very resinous flavor. Would you say the Barbados cherry is much more palatable to the average person?

I have 2 Barbados Cherry trees. The first year they gave me lots of fruit. The last 2 years they flower but never have fruit. I do notice ants crawling all over the limbs and am wondering if this is the problem? I was going to use tanglefoot on the bottom limbs but I also have a bunch of lizards that I don’t want to hurt.any ideas about why I’m getting tons of bloom with no fruit? Im in zone 9b and they are protected from most wind.

Tanglefoot would definitely get a lot of lizards. If you have a lot of ants, you might have scale... so treating the scale could solve the ant problem. The lack of fruit might be a nutritional problem... can't think of other possible explanations at the moment

Seedling trees can give sour fruit and not be as productive
