You had the cloth belts on backwards. The slight higher ridge of the belt overlap seam is placed up and away from you. The knife blade then rides over the ridge as opposed to digging into it.

Excellent presentation tonight! The tax pep talk was useful. The explanation of the Worksharp Elite and its accessories was very clear. Now I want one for the capabilities it has to offer. You've always stuck to the original list you put out in the first email or the link on Nick Loper's podcast. Thanks, you never push fads or gimmicks.

Great video's. I am a mobile sharpener up here in Canada, and have used the blade grinding attachment for 5 years, and use it every day. I have also had several packets of the cloth strop belts fray and fail on me as well...

Hi Matt, thanks for the helpful video! Could you provide some tips for cleaning and maintaining the work sharp belts to make them last longer?

There's not a ton you can do. They will wear out. You can maybe get a little more life out of them by using a cleaning stick: amzn.to/3WGz8qP

Excellent points my sharpening business saved my wife and I around 3K this year in tax. I agree Cliff is the man on belts and he’s super helpful like you. He ships fast even from Hawaii. I had problems with the WS cloth stropping belts mine kept fraying called them and they said make sure its centered LOL. Come on guys I know to center my belts. So I now use leather impregnated with Tormek. paste. Love cubittron belts I have some 50 ,80, 120 and they just don’t wear out they are amazing. Great for mower blades on the 1x30 I don’t sharpen much on belts having made the jump to CBN wheels but I do use them for repairs reprofiles and cosmetics a lot. Great video!

Hey Matt, Love the video. I actually stumbled across you from the video you did with Worksharp telling your story and explaining your business model. I’m about to get into setting up a shop for what I hope to turn into a full time sharpening business here in our hometown. I love all your info. As I was watching just now, I suddenly felt compelled to ask what kind of system you may (or not) use for securing the Ken Onion sharpeners to the table top of your work bench. I can’t really tell if your bench in the shot has grooves and slits in it for varied configurations, or if that’s just an aesthetic. Either way, I’d love any advice you may have on setting up a Ken Onion sharpener based operation; I own one unit that I’ve been using for a while and plan on acquiring a few more so I don’t have to keep changing out belts for each blade. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work. Your info and helpful attitude are invaluable resources!

Lap seam on WS cloth stropping belts...they're directional. Using these I realize they are directional because they have a lap seam and not a butted seam. (The WS info sheet that comes with these is wrong about this in my opinion. I communicated this to WS.) Looking closely at the lap seam each time you use one, it is easy to choose the correct direction that will better sustain belt life. GREAT VIDEO, MATT.

Thanks Bill! Yeah, I have some cloth belts that have lasted very well. Not sure the issue, or if there even is one.

Mine have held up well to over 20 sharpenings so far.. I drew a directional arrow inside the belt with a sharpie for quick reference when changing. I share the machine with my son and no problems.

And also I would like to order these belts you was talking about so can you tell me which ones I need ?

When you buy Buck knive it's very sharp but it's rough on the edges and not smooth that's why they cut anything and then we sharpen them and they never get to the same as the factory

Hey there Matt. Great videos! Thanks for all your effort. What is the brand of your metal work (surface) bench. It looks perfect for containment of the 'grinding debris' that we all encounter! Again thanks for all the info!

Hey Matt? I am a total newb to sharpening, I have a Ken onion edition sharpening belt, I was hoping I was putting the belts on the right direction? I know that sounds crazy but there’s kinda confusion going on with the stock belts that came with the sharpener, they have a taped seam on one side, I’m assuming I do not use that side, as I get finer and finer it becomes hard to tell which side to use they don’t realy have it labeled and I threw out the directions, lol.. any help will be great, and do you think the standard belts that come with the sharpener are ok to use ? I just have a few blades that are kinda pricey and I don’t want to go diving into sharpening them until I know I’m good to go! Thank you for putting out this info it’s a very niche subject to begin with but I think every man should know how to re hone a blade. I always used a stone but man this Ken Onion edition sharpener is sweet! Also, it is the Ken onion edition sharpener, as well as the blade attachment is a Ken onion signature, work sharp makes a different, I would say less technical version of this belt sharpener and it’s called the Mk.2. Just an FYI in case you had people asking or saying something !

If you can see any printing that will be on the inside of the belt. Keep looking closely at them all and I think you'll get the eye for which is the inside and which is the outside. They'll probably all arrive correctly too so, worst case, just don't turn them inside out. The belts that Work Sharp sells with the tool are great. For those of us who use the tool on a daily(ish) basis we might decide to purchase some others. Cheers, Matt

Very limited for after aftermarket belts in the UK. Amazon US is the only place I can find any and the reviews are so mixed it puts me off buying and paying postage etc. Anyone been successful finding any?

Have any of your work sharpeners had the motor fail yet or any parts wore out on them after heavy use that caused needing a replacement machine? Do you ever leave them running more than a few minutes straight?
@capnmatt41

I do leave mine running for more than a few minutes and I've not had a motor fail. I have 3 of them. I have heard of it happening to other people but I've also heard that Work Sharp handles customer service very well.
