Been wondering how would lift fare inside of a shell to ignite the stars if just a loose break. Say 50-60 grams of both stars and the lift. A good ratio to not just absolutley destroy the stars. Its A mix but mostly 2fa i have from a ton of wasted shells that got crushed and leaked.

Smaller shells use mainly BP for the burst. As the shells get larger I use coated rice hulls for the break. Also a touch of a hot prime to help it ignite.

if you're very picky about the milling media, as in you don't want lead to be incorporated into your mixes and don't want any risk of sparks, go with solid brass balls instead, the only other spark free metal besides lead.

Very interesting video although your terminology for black powder grain size and so on is a little strange and differs from traditional terminology. Traditionally anything that passes the FFFFg screen is called dust or meal powder and is used for coating stars. and you did not explain that sporting powders such as GOEX is pressed into cakes at high pressures and then grained and screen for size.

No kidding! I wondered about that myself. The first time I made BP I didn't know the differences in charcoal and used an 80 grain instead of airfloat. Not even enough power for lifting! Took me awhile to figure that one out.

I've even tried a formula using nc lacquer as a binder/solvent... It was closer but still not shiny like theirs... My first batch of bp I made, I used charcoal from the store, substituted sugar for a modifier instead of sulfur. It was brick charcoal, so I had to wash the clay and lime out of it before milling it. Worked okay but not as good as Willow, poplar, or hemp charcoal.

Kenny that shiny Black powder is commercial sporting powder and it is tumbled to polish it sometimes with graphite to make it poure smoothly and also to make it somewhat moisture proof. There is a big difference between the manufacture of sporting powder and poyro powder for fireworks and this video did not cover that.

I have quite a bit of potassium perchlorate, can i use that instead of potassium nitrate in black powder? Or stick to the potassium nitrate? Also another question, on your star making video i was looking at the formula and it says to use potassium chlorate, would it make a difference if i used potassium PERchlorate? Like i said i have a bit of it and got that based off of what other people have told me in means of it being safer than chlorate. Just wondering if it will make a difference in a star formula before i make it. Thanks in advance. Love the videos by the way, they are very helpful. I always try to research and learn as much as i can before i attempt anything. So far for compounds i have done quite a bit of flash powder, made some very good and strong gun cotton and now im starting to learn black powder and color formulas. Thanks again :)

I'm making B P for a muzzle loading pistol. My finely powdered sulphur is only 90% purity. How will that affect my end result? Should I add 10% more sulphur to the recipe? Should I try to purify the sulphur? If so, how? Thank you.
@Subway1427
@Subway1427 5 жыл бұрын
Have you tried purifying your sulphur? A friend of mine is in the process of purifying his. The store bought garden sulphur he bought is 92% or 94% pure, it is slightly off color, not the vibrant yellow it should be. It's really quite a simple process. Since sulphur is insoluble in water, you can purify it with simple water, to eliminate any other contaminants from entering your product, you can use distilled water, but a few extra tap water minerals won't effect anything. The way my friend does it is in a few steps. 1st. Put sulphur into a container which will allow you to add about a litre of water, with enough room left over to shake the contents. 2nd. Add hot water, hotter the better, but not too hot where it can burn yourself, or damage the container. Shake contents fairly vigorously, making sure that the water is thoroughly mixing with all of the sulphur. Shake for a few minutes and allow the contents to stand for 10 to 15 minutes. After contents have stood, all of the sulphur will resettle to the bottom of the container, slowly pour off the water being careful not to lose product in the process. 3rd. Repeat. You can repeat this as many times as you like. 4 or 5 times is about how many my friend does it. 4th. This time repeat the same process with cold water. As some contaminants will be soluble in hot water, others may be soluble in cold. 5th. After you have completed all the steps, and you have been careful not to lose product. Slowly cut the top portion of the container off. If you are using a 2 litre pop bottle or juice bottle. Drain off any remaining water, then pour contents into an aluminum foil lined baking tray or similar. Spread contents out and allow to dry for a couple of days. Finally, you will notice that your dark yellow, gross looking sulphur, is now a vibrant, bright and beautiful yellow. And damn near 100% pure. I wouldn't say it's exactly 100%. But it is pretty darn close. Anyway, that's the only, and simplest way I know how to purify your sulphur. Play safe.
@Subway1427
@Subway1427 5 жыл бұрын

@@Subway1427 Thanks very much for the information. After trying in vain to find sulfur in pellet form I bought it finely powdered. I can get 100% pure sulfur, but only in 50# bags. I didn't realize the procedure for purifying the fine powder was basically the same as for pelletized, so your information is very helpful. I'll do the purifying procedure as you suggest. I haven't yet corned any BP, but I'll make it that way. I'll do the first corning using door / window screen. I want to end up with FFFg or FFg. I can shoot both. I have rifle and revolver. All I've done so far is to make some charcoal using chunks of yellow pine lumber. I'll make small batches of B.P using various local woods to watch the burn test, then make bigger batches with the wood that works best for gunpowder. Thanks again for sharing the information.

There are lots of binders that people use, and some have luck not using any at all. I'm working on testing the use of phenolic resin as a binder, such as red gum is sometimes used. Both make harder granules but are expensive to use. Dextrin works just fine, rice starch is also sometimes used. Just depends what's at hand and what works for you. As for my exparementing in phenolic as a binder, I happened to buy a good quantity for cheap, I aready use it in my firework stars, and I can use acetone to bind it. Drying time is hours, and I dont worry about re-crystallization of the kno3. Through the small tests I've conducted my normal dextrin bound milled powder performs similarly to my unmilled phenolic bound.
