I watch a ton of vandwelling videos and most of them are of the "look at how cool my lifestyle is" type. However, Bob, your videos really are useful and helpful. I have learned so much from them. In 2018 I built out a cargo van with my friend's help. So far I have traveled to at least 8 National Parks, many state parks and other locations. So many of my plans came from your advice, including solar, what type of microwave to get, and much more. Thank you, Bob. You had to move into a vehicle due to tragedy, but in the end, you turned your misfortune into a triumph and you took all of us with you along the way.

Mike Kuna can you tell me Mike which Microwave unit you bought and what must I have to set it up in a Prius... I have some idea of what I would need... but truly I need more info. I want electrical for a microwave, small TV, portable fridge/freezer. Having a instapot, and Induction burner would also be preferable would be nice-will need an inverter and solar, and an extra battery. What would you suggest for brands, Etc.?

You are right about the power of listening and caring to someone's story. Today I struck up a conversation of this type with an elderly (75'ish) table cleaner and complete stranger in a fast food place. We both shared a story about our common cancer concerns and said caring words to each other. We left each other with a wish for good things to happen and a smile. Neither of us was looking for sympathy. But, only to be heard. There is power in that. It lifts the spirit. Bob, you always seem to drop a nugget of wisdom in every video. Thank you.

About InstaPot: Spaghetti cooks ½ time as pasta package suggests. Plus can sauté onions etc in pot prior to adding dry pasta. Plus use only 2 cups water instead of boiling 2+ quarts. Plus no straining water. Plus only one pot cleanup. All-around...highly efficient. And vitamin/flavor rich.

I like how most of your videos give us listeners a cozy feel and helps us imagine we are there listening to a wise old man. Just the simple rain drops, a fire, a water background, or even just a chair in the shade makes us feel like we are there with ya. This is what we seek, but for now we may have to prepare further. Keep it cozy for us until then, good friend.

This is where all those years with Scouts comes in handy. We did foil dinners with our kids all the time, you learn the “drugstore fold”. It creates an airtight package. It’s fun to watch the foil package expand. No dishes to wash, though you do have to dispose of used foil in a responsible manner. A great dessert … baked bananas. Cut an unpeeled banana lengthwise, keeping bottom peel intact. Lay in yummy flavors (mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, nuts, etc). Wrap the banana in foil, using the drugstore fold method and lay over hot coals. Bake for about ten minutes. Unwrap and enjoy. A breakfast treat .. muffins in orange skins. Cut about 1/3 off the top of an orange. Dig out the orange flesh, keeping the peel intact. Eat the orange or mix into your muffin batter. Fill orange peel “bowl” about 2/3 full of batter. Bake over hot coals til muffin tests done. Yummy. You can do pancakes or cake batter this way as well. Delicious dinner side dish .. Saturday Night Onions (courtesy Paula Deen). Cut top,off onion. Remove peel. Keep root section intact. Dig out a hole in the middle of the onion. Into hole, put one bouillon cube, a tablespoon butter, black pepper. Wrap tightly in foil (good place to practice that drugstore fold). Bake for 30-45 minutes. Place package in bowl before opening because this produces a lot of juice. Open and enjoy. This is like chunky French onion soup. You can bake meatloaf in hollowed out onion. Here’s a fun experiment to try. Cook scrambled eggs in a resealable plastic sandwich bag. Mix the eggs in the bag, seal it, place in gently simmering water and cook til done. You can cook bread or biscuits over coals. Wrap a dough rope around a fire safe and non-toxic rod or stick. Suspend over coals, turning frequently until done.

Foil cooking is what we call "Hobo Dinners." Very popular for campers. On coolers, there are coolers that will keep a bag of ice for 5 days. And they are CHEAP! Plus they come in different quart capacity. You can keep fresh veggies and other foods for a several days. TIP: It may keep fresh foods 5 days, but after 3, I'd cook the foods up and they should last an additional few days. Just reheat and that doesn't take long. Then you would be set until the next ice run. Keep the cooler in a covered or enclosed area OUT OF THE SUN should keep things inside from melting.

Bob, I live in sticks and bricks in Indianapolis, and I really enjoy your videos! You bring back great memories of camping and boating every summer with my family when we were growing up. Great times! Oh, and we cooked with a large stovetop pressure cooker all those years, too. It blew three times in 15 years when the pressure got too high. The only safety feature was a small lead plug in the lid. It would fly out with a loud pop right before the explosion, giving just enough time to run out of the kitchen and avoid being scalded. Then everything hit the ceiling and rained down all over the place. I can still remember the pork and sauerkraut coming down with all that liquid and grease. The vegetable-tomato soup storm was the worst though. After hours of cleanup, we still had to repaint the ceiling. At least no one got hurt. Hope to meet you on the road. Come to Indiana! The trees are gorgeous in fall, but your bread will definitely get stale real quick. God bless, Julie

I have done the foil cooking on a grill. I cooked the veggies on the stove first until they were half cooked. Then put in the foil with the meat on bottom. I put the seasonings and butter on top, closed the foil and put it on the grill for about 20 minutes. Checked and flipped it over if it needed more time.

You are an exceptional human being. Whatever people want to say, the fact remains there are so many people in need in this country who can learnt o live in a minimalist way living in a van/car/ or other vehicle instead of having to be homeless. You share your knowledge, common sense, kindness, assistance that it's immeasurable. You recognized that and you offer so much assistance. Never doubt how much hope you give to people. BTW I had watched the interview you did with a major TV program and I did not like it. You were good, but the interviewer approach lacked compassion for people that are in so much need. It seemed they were more interested in the "cool kids with the fancy van build" that is all I want to say about that. We love YOU!

As small boat sailors, we've used alcohol stoves for years. Also, even though it is the fuel whose "burn temp" is the one most impacted by elevation, we have carried alcohol stoves while hiking. The stoves we've preferred have been pressurized (we hand-pump them to a certain pressure before they've lit). Once lit, they've cooked well. (Yes, there are non-pressurized models galore.) For us, a main feature of alcohol as fuel has been that it is generally non-explosive, it stores well, and water puts out an alcohol fire quickly -- and on a boat, water is readily available. Of note,, especially now, during the pandemic and the increase in IPAs, liquid alcohol of burn quality (91% to 99%) is *not* necessarily inexpensive.

My former has been with an eagle scout and he used to wrap our meat in foil with the veggies and potatoes and bake it in the oven in foil I would put a pan underneath for dripping. It is very very tasty. The something I really love is so simple it's called The Old Fashioned sizzleburger! That is where you take about a tablespoon of butter and you put it in the pan and then you take your hamburger patty that you shaved and molded out of whatever kind you like oh, I do like 80/20 most of the time oh, because it is a little more flavorful, this way. I then put a tablespoon or two or whatever amount you like of the Worcester sauce on top of the burger come and then I just keep flipping it , and you season the meat the way you like it when you shape your burger. It's really easy! I also like making the caramelized onions, Bob. I sometimes add a wonderful bunch of mushrooms , and saute them in real butter. Some would claim this isn't healthy , 💖 but I think it's good old-fashioned fun! 💛🤹‍♀️

To the person asking about duel fuel stoves (the kind you pump)...Never use one in an RV or van or even in your house. Outside only! And remember they often flare up and you have to carry gasoline or coleman fuel (which is gasoline).

Eggs will last up to 9 month's if you coat the eggs with mineral oil and put them in a dark cool place. Eggs spoil fast because the shells porous and mineral oil stop's breathing. I've tried eggs after. 8 months of storage. They taste like fresh.

Re food storage: I keep dried whole milk since I only use milk in cooking/baking. Nido is the brand I buy - it’s available in the supermarket, usually in the Latin food section.

So thankful for the inclusion on the InstaPot, which seems to be the most efficient cooking appliance for me so far, but I wondered about being able to utilize with solar power due to the initial draw. Appreciate it Bob and Brad!

My friend gave me a brand new Instapot recently, but I haven't used it yet. The booklet states that you CAN DO CANNING in it as well! I forget how many jars you can put in, but several, and I was intrigued! I personally wouldn't want to deal with the weight, rigidity, and breakability of canned foods on the ROAD, but if you have the space, and like canning, sure, why not?

So good to see you Bob and have really enjoyed the Q&A. Tell Sue Ann hello. Look forward to more videos. Learned a lot as always and I agree that things are really simple. We humans are the ones that make things so hard. Heck, I already use some of these tips in my straw and brick house (I'm thinking about the three little pigs - lol). Great advice. Thanks again! WF

Concerning the alcohol stove. My boat came with a pressurized alcohol stove system. It was very difficult to see the flame and the BTU output was inferior to the propane stove I changed to. So, if you have the option, I highly recommend a propane system. Alcohol is expensive as well. Remember, I said if you have the option. There are many options for cooking. Use what works for you.

Love your channel and all you contribute. I have a great trick for no refrigeration. Buy eggs from a local flock and specify un washed eggs. Un washed eggs are coated in bloom and will last safely at room temperature for many weeks. Enjoy!

I cook my rice for 1 or 2 min. I turn it off and leave it under pressure to steam while the pressure naturally releases. It still takes you 15 minutes but it only uses one minute of electricity :)

I know this is an old video, but if someone wants info: Harmony house has veggie meal packs like chili and soup. These would have beans and veggies that would be healthy and also would make many meals (though the kits cost about $70). They have some cheaper packages.

4 Patroits brand has dry meals with shelf life of 25 years. Each pack will feed 2 in case other people want a different mean than you want to eat. I think that may be cheaper and it definitely has more reliable packageing.
