I wished I would have taken ear pro more seriously. At 32, I already have serious tinnitus and high frequency hearing loss. It started with subwoofers in high school, then firearms, then drag racing, then working around industrial and construction machinery. Apparently, standing next to a pile driver all day isn't good for your hearing. You would also be surprised at how loud hammer strikes can be. Just driving nails into plywood can be as loud as a gunshot. I swear that it has also messed with my balance. After a very close gunshot by my left ear without ear pro I started to notice I would get vertigo at times. Another thing I experience is called diplacusis, which is where you hear one sound at two different pitches or even at two different times. It is extremely strange to experience. It generally happens with higher pitched sounds and female voices. It sounds like two people talking at the exact same time, but at different frequencies. Your inner ear is damaged so it sends corrupted signals to your brain which then interprets the corrupted signal as either a pitch difference or a time difference. Take hearing protection serious. All I hear is ringing and it can be aggravating at night. I have to sleep with the tv on just to get to sleep.

Just a note on Ear Plugs/Foamies, To get proper protection you have to extend your ear with your other hand while inserting them into your ear canal. Most people, and I have been guilty of it too, just push them in with one hand and leave it at that. Yes, that works to some degree but it's not giving you the full NRR protection that it was designed to do. So, if you want to be able to hear your Grand Babies make those cute little infant sounds, wear your hearing protection properly. As Eric said, Once it's gone, it's gone. So protect your self. Thanks for sharing this fellas.

Note that even with doubling up, a certain amount of bone conduction still brings the "shock and awe" into your ears through the bones in your face. So for really heavy loads, big muzzle brakes, etc there may be no choice but limiting your round count per session if you want to avoid damage. Learned this from a friend who is a audiologist. This does not mean that hearing protection doesn't work - it absolutely does, and you are crazy not to use it! Just be aware that even the best measures are not 100% protection when it gets to the loudest, most violent sound impulses.

Guys (and gals), I'm an old Shooter, Singer song writer and actor(and diver lol), hearing was something I took for granted on movie sets, gun ranges and in all the many ways a musician can damage their hearing, until recently when I went temporarily deaf on the right side. I tell ya it was not nice. Three weeks of misery before it corrected itself(I won't go into details, suffice to say salt water did both damage and healing), I also will never forget the day 15 years or so ago, when I left my ear pro out of one ear for just a few shots...which gifted me tinnitus. Linear compensators on all my rifles the last couple years and even my AR10 I’ve had to go out and dispatch a coyote on the fly without ear pro and no ringing ears it’s really amazing how the linear compensator doesn’t make the gun whiter but projects the sound forward of the shooter. I have now the linear comps on all my rifles they have one that you can thread off for a regular compensator but it has a blast can that screws over the comp and man that works so good. Would highly recommend makes your ears not be ringing for hours after a quick unplanned shot. Rule number one never shoot out of a vehicle if at all possible the amount of hearing damage from that is beyond believable haha from my own experience at least.

15:00 started talking about doubling up but from what I've read it actually isn't double. So if you wear 25dB rated and 25dB it doesn't equal 50 it's actually more like 30 or so. I wish it was added when you put 25 and 33 , bit it's not what I've understood. I hope I'm wrong but I've researched a shit load!

In Vietnam we would bury small connex boxes in the berm around the mountain I was on, and cut gun ports in them for bunkers. Try shooting a few hundred rounds with an M60 in a metal box while someone on each side of you is shooting their M14 or M16. I finally learned to break off cigarette filters and make ear plugs with them in Vietnam. My ears still ring louder than most people talk, and understanding speech gets harder every year. Hearing aids just make the tinnitus worse if I wear them longer than a few hours. Take care of your ears!

I’m surprised you didn’t cover custom fit. Active and passive protection. Especially being glasses-wearers, custom fit will solve almost every comfort issue you would come across and it would have consistent NRR compared to generic, where there’s a lot more deviation in a proper fit. There’s also Multi-Memory features in electronic protection that can mitigate background sound like wind. Very useful for hunting/windy environments. Fun video to watch :)

Still thankfull that our NCOs told to use foam ones under the "mickey mouse ears" during live firing 3.5cm twin AA guns. As a gunner, you wear pretty good elecronic ones with com connected to the AA gun, but everyone else around was wearing double ear protection. (loader, range officers, guy watching close buy...) The funniest earprotection i have come across was during conscript time at night shooting: One guy had a pair of luminescent foamies. They glowed green. You can't not laugh when in the dark you see two green dots in head height float around. (It was really dark, but his glowing foamies were clearly visible from quite a distance.)

One of the loudest noises I've ever heard was a MCLC rocket. I had no clue how loud a 6ft long, 3-4in diameter rocket could be. The kicker is that rockets aren't like gunshots, it's like a gunshot, if the bang lasted 2-3 seconds.

Suppressors are ABSOLUTELY necessary for helping preserve your hearing. Just ask Rob Ski from AKOU. Especially for those nightstand guns. When something goes bump in the night odds are you’re not gonna be thinking about throwing in ear pro. Big shoutouts to OSS Suppressors who are renaming to HUXWRX Safety Co. If more suppressor manufacturers would change the way they market these things, they would be more commonly used. It should be widely recognized for what it is and that’s a tool to protect your hearing and reduce shot signature.

I work in a datacenter where loud sustained noise levels are part of everyday life and have worked in factories where its even louder. What many people do not understand is that hearing damage is PERMANENT. Hearing aids can help, but there is no surgery or drugs that can repair your hearing once has it been damaged, and it can be a gradual process that you may not know is even happening to you. I double up on hearing protection with foam plugs and earmuffs regardless if I'm indoors or outdoors.

Fully agree. But there's another thing people might underestimate: I was at a concert almost 20 years ago, and i didn't realize beforehand how loud it would be. (the loose fabric of my pants around my calfs was moving substantially by the sound pressure.) For around 3 days afterwards i had constant loud random noise on my ears impacting my hearing a great deal. Luckily it went away after that, but i would not count on that working a second time. And i certainly don't want that experience again. So i'd say one might be lucky once but should not rely on that.

I use the Walker's Quad Connect bluetooth earpro. Most electronic earpro have 2 mics, one in each ear muff. They are somewhat directional. You will hear best what's in front of you. If you are in an indoor range's shooting bay, you likely aren't facing the shooting partner who's standing behind you and off to the side. Drove me nuts trying to hear what my dad and my friends were saying when we went to the range. The Quad Connects have 4 mics, two per ear muff. They pic up sounds far better and are not directional. Best set of earpro that I've found. Now, I just need to find me some good inner earpro for doubling them up. Tried the Axil stuff, garbage dipped in dog sh*t, and of course foamies, but nothing is quite comfortable beneath the larger ear muffs.

I have tinnitus from music. Cymbals crack really damn loud.... Need a fan on 24/7 or I start getting anxious. Although, the crazy thing is my hearing is pinpoint. I can hear things that amaze people. lol

I can attest that the bullet crack from .223 is horrendous, even outdoors. Still need at least foamies.

When I take a new person shooting, I always stress the importance of having eyes and ear protection. I always ask them do you like seeing and hearing things, then you want to wear eyes and ear protection every time you pull the trigger on a gun. I stress this because I had to start wearing hearing aids at the age of 48. And I believe it was from going to the range as a kid with my father to site in his deer rifle. I remember wearing the foam ear plugs at the range but still having a ringing sound in my ears for two or three days afterwards. So, for the love of God please have everyone you know wear hearing and eye protection at all times!

Man Ive learned to always wear them simply because I hate the ringing in my ears afterwards. Even with plugs and over ears. Some larger magnum calibers still are hard on the ears

My go to ear pro is almost always just foam ear plugs. Headsets annoy me for a multitude of reasons, but with my face shape it makes shouldering a rifle or shotgun near impossible without constantly impacting the ear cup. Also, talking or clenching the jaw tends to lift the cups quite a bit. So I tend to just go with ear plugs, unless my friends are shooting 10.5 ARs. There's no easy answer lol

Above 80dB and continuous, longer than a few minutes needs protection. If you have to raise your voice to hear, probably getting into the range of hearing protection.

I always double my ear protection when shooting rifles unsuppressed and I’ll just wear the over the ears when shooting rifles suppressed. I didn’t know a brake will register 170 db at the ear but I definitely can believe it.

Thank you guys, been wanting to get new ear pro and didn't know what to buy (just have some random pair from home depot). Gonna buy those Otis. What about eye pro? I just use regular safety glasses, but curious if there's better options out there.

There are companies that make excellent eyepro, such as Oakley, that are capable of withstanding direct hits from a shotgun. It's overkill in terms of protection at the range but just like hearing, once you lose your sight, it's gone for good. For people with glasses, there are inserts available for your prescription that can be used with them. If in doubt, look for APEL approved, that's what the army uses

If you have an HSA through your work and you get an doctors note saying that ear protection is a medical device for you, you can use your HSA to buy ear pro. But as things change, read up on your HSA rules to make sure that you can use it for ear pro.

My question is, is there a pair of ear pro that has two audio adjusters on them. for instance, one could be for spatial awareness audio, and the other could be for team communication. is that a thing?

During ait (13b) I couldn't stand the mil issue earplugs. I bought some small foamy plugs and used them instead. They where so effective I fell asleep behind the truck (chief said go for it) while the paladin and the 105 was firing.

My work asked me to make a Ukrainian inspired honey pepper vodka for a special this weekend. One cocktail we are considering to make with it is a ginger beer "boiler-maker" aka "bomb". The name I came up with for this cocktail is "The Makeshift Molotov" Lol Boss said it was a bit insensitive. What do you think? If you are in Grand Rapids, MI come to long road distillery and ask for a Makeshift Molotov this weekend!

Biggest con for me with the over the ears is my cheek rest pushes them up or breaks the seal. I can shoot more comfortable with in ear ear pro. I have alot of sets of both tho, all electronic.
