To most people, breeding o hundred
Chornpions in o lifefirne would be an irnpossible
dream. The idea of ever Having bred o thousand
Champions in one breed in your own country
sounds like pure fantasy, yet this is the record fo
date of Sylvia Hammarstrom of the legendary
Skansen's Giant Schnauzer kennel.
A well-bred Giant Schnauzer closely resembles the Standard Schnauzer-only bigger. As their name suggests, Giants are imposing.
A male might stand as high as 27.5 inches at the shoulder and weigh 95 pounds. The muscular, substantial body is, as the breed’s fanciers put it, a “bold and valiant figure of a dog.” The double coat is either solid black or “pepper and salt.” Familiar characteristics of the Mini, Standard, and Giant are a harsh beard and eyebrows, accentuating a keen, sagacious expression.

I had one of Sylvia’s dogs. A giant. Skansen’s Dear Sammy “Sam.” I fed raw and he never went to the vet except for shots and to have foxtails taken out of his nose! He was 13 when he passed. He was the most incredible friend. Extremely smart, loyal, affectionate and yes protective. He loved people and they all loved him. RIP Sam. You are missed my friend.

I had also had one of Sylvia's giants. He worked as a medical service dog for almost 14 years. He was 16 years when he passed away. He saved my life at least twice and his advanced obedience trainer & service dog trainers gave him the nickname, Einstein. They had never encountered such an incredibly smart dog. I wouldn't be here today if it hadn't been for my Giant Schnauzer. Thanks Sylvia!

Nico Pastore our giant is now 7mos old. If someone comes to our property she’ll protest them being there, once she sees we’re ok with them she backs off, but she keeps her eyes on them continuously and watches us to make sure we’re still ok. If someone comes into the house it’s on a whole other level! I would not come in if I didn’t know her. I have no doubt she would go after anyone who wasn’t invited. I feel so much safer when I’m here alone. And like I said she’s only 7 months. Great dog! They love their owners!!

Keeping the puppies until 10-16 weeks makes so much sense. More work for the breeders, but better socialization for the puppies. 😊
@emmamemma4162
@emmamemma4162 4 жыл бұрын
This depends a lot on the specific breeder and buyer that are going to socialize the dog. I agree socialization to other dogs is important, and the puppy will certainly "learn to speak dog" if they stay longer with the breeder. But I would only leave a puppy with the breeder for all of the first 12 weeks that are most important to socialization if they are also doing the following: -Socializing to different kinds of people. -Socializing to other, different looking dog breeds (and animals). -Sounds, surfaces, grooming, etc -Different environments, vehicles, and events. (We live in a city, if we'd let our puppy grow up on a farm, we'd be in trouble. In fact, our puppy needed to learn to go on buses, trains and trams, visit cafés and be calm around crowds of people). -Potty training and obedience, starting leash work. On the other hand, the earlier you get your puppy from the breeder the more important it will be to meet other dogs. You'll need to arrange a lot of off-leash play sessions, and you can't wait until they've had all their shots before doing it.
@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 4 жыл бұрын
Leaving puppies with the breeder for that long won't guarantee better socialization. In large breeds with huge litters like this, 24 hours in a day are just not enough for a single person (breeder) to take each individual puppy on field trips to encounter traffic, crowds of people, unusual sounds, etc. Of course, it depends on the puppy buyer's individual situation. If the new owner also doesn't have the time to take their puppy out a lot, not much will be lost. In that case, the puppy will at least get some more experience with being around other dogs (though in some really bad cases, the home environment at the breeder's is pretty toxic, with dogs being stressed out and looking to bully the weakest pack member). But if the puppy buyer already has another dog, and some contacts with other dog owners, they can organize meet ups to socialize the puppy with their dogs, and achieve the same level of dog to dog socialization that a breeder could, IN ADDITION to socializing the puppy to other things as well.
@emmamemma4162
@emmamemma4162 4 жыл бұрын
@@animalobsessed1 This is what we are doing. Our puppy is from a litter of 9 and the breeder told us straight up she would not be able to provide enough socialization and training for all those puppies beyond their seventh week. We've been really active with having doggy playmates (different ages and breeds) and so far it seems our puppy speaks dog fluently. She also ignores dogs that we meet on a walk since she is so well-bonded to us. She's also confident in all kinds of environments, loves meeting people and her obedience and potty training are coming along nicely.

@emmamemma4162
@emmamemma4162 4 жыл бұрын
@@animalobsessed1 Thank you:) We have a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeén, or GBGV for short. The GBGV is a scent hound that was bred for hunting rabbits in rocky and thorny terrain with hunters on foot (hence the "basset" aka shorter legs). They hunt in packs, so they tend not to get in fights with other dogs too easily. They are also goofy, happy-go-lucky dogs with a beautiful howl and impressive bark. They can be stubborn, independent and aloof, since they are scent hounds it is not recommended to keep them off leash (but they don't run as far away as some other hunting dogs since they typically hunt in a smaller area). Obedience training needs to be started early, and you need patience and a sense of humor to train them, but they are generally calm and sociable even if they haven't had much training. They benefit greatly from doing any kind of scent work, especially tracking. The GBGV is a medium-sized dog and it is the fastest runner in the basset group.

SV Rufus it really depends on what YOU are like. If you have a dominant, strong willed personality, it can be great. If not, I really really really do not recommend this breed. I have seen quite a number of absolute disasters. These dogs are intense and they will challenge their owners regularly. If you aren’t able to NATURALLY enforce rules, boundaries and limitations without effort, pick a different breed. You want your dog to have less energy than you do for a harmonious life. For me, these dogs are a lot of work, yes, but it comes easily for me. Keeping them mentally stimulated and physically drained is work but I am a strict person. For example, my current Giant came to me after failing five different homes in five years. For me, he is a great dog but I get it. He is not a great American style pet. You can’t drop him off at doggie day care. You can’t pet him all the time (he needs to earn his rewards and affection)... They all need clear and strong leadership so as long as you are that type of person, they are fantastic.
@brandischeffer2251
@brandischeffer2251 4 жыл бұрын
SV Rufus They are very intuitive. If you get a puppy, get one from Sylvia. Skansen dogs are fantastic and never EVER encourage them to guard. When the doorbell rings, don’t ever say, “who is that?” in an excited tone etc. They WILL guard. All of them. But they are not aggressive. In my experience, without any training, they actually go for the throat. I have never known one not to be good with children and NO ONE nefarious is getting close to the kids.

He would run past the skunk and make it spray. Then he would sit and watch as it moved out of the sprayed area. I observed him once and comanded him on stay, watch. He waited and when I said, "hit it," he ran and crushed its head on the run and ran past. Then came to me. No one came in my house without my permission and no ñne left with out it. The natural guarding instincts in her are amazing, when my wife was pregnant she knew and she was very protective around strangers but with a good judgement, she has a very good judgement on sketchy people vs friendly people. Plays with our one year old boy very well and she takes the beatings from him without retaliation. When at the dog park she loves to play but when people walk around the fences she sits at attention and watches them until they are out of sight and when my wife leaves the dog park to change my sons diaper she goes to the fence and watches her all the way to the car and watches her walk back into the fenced area then resumes playing. None of this was taught to her just pure instinct.

She even knows how to play hide and seek and wait for me until im done hiding and I didnt even have to teach her! Very powerful nose too and she loves to dig and hunt for things. I would say the only trouble with these breeds is they are super independent and are natural leaders so you have to establish who is alpha but they are also incredibly loyal. My dog is also good with other dogs and very friendly. If you get this dog, you need to work with them because they get bored easily.

Her dogs are allowed to run freely with other sized dogs We did not get our pups until they were 12-14 weeks. It makes a difference for sure. Wonderful breed and breeder

Thank you for such a thorough view of the Giant Schnauzer! We loved a Miniature Schnauzer (Sasha) for over 12 yrs. She was our puppy sister/daughter and gave our lives and home meaning and purpose. The past two yrs have been extremely difficult. I agree 100%, she loved to be with us and share our feelings.

So crazy how different the American and European Giant Schnauzers look. I have a 15w old GS, his dad is European champion. European GS’s look fuller and wider and have a more beautiful coat, the show lines tho. American’s also don’t stand like a terrier which they still mainly are. Warning to those who are considering the breed, they are NOT for the first time owner. They need a strong willed handler which won’t get afraid of them and is able to handle their character. They can get dominant (especially the males), are very stubborn and very intelligent at the same time. Early socialization to people and dogs is important at young age because they have a natural tendency to guard and be wary of strangers once they pass 4-6 months of age. They are also mouthy, like she described. They aren’t inherit aggressive tho. I love my little Odin, he’s the best!

When you say. An owner that wont be afraid of them. What do you mean? Iam very interested in the breed. They are to me one of the most beautiful dogs. Bit want all the information I can find to make a good well rounded decision. Thanks
@RRWerken

SV Rufus They can be intimidating when they challenge you in the beginning. If a puppy has been with it’s mother for the full 8 weeks, it will be a little easier but still. Mouthy + dominance + no known boundaries makes it a challenge :) If you’re having doubts, contact a good!! breeder, ask where their previous litters ended up, and try to visit someone. I HIGHLY advise meeting with a Riesenschnauzer before committing to one. And yes, it’s a commitment in the truest sense.

True. I feel it's the Same with the "American" labrador and the "English Lab. Big difference. I got the English show line lab. Keep him rawfed and fit. Such a well built dog. He is astonishing! But i guess the standards differes alot from AKC and European in both the show lines and field lines.

hi from 2024. I spent around 6 hours on KZfaq watching GSs videos - pros, cons, grooming, whatever. this one video covers it all. best food, best exercise, best socializing. that 'aha!' type of lesson, like when my granny told me to not get intimidated by the sourdough, because it's just a sourdough, and you can shape it whatever (and she was absolutely right).

Think about the dogs. If they weren't supposed to have tails they would have been born without the..I love the look too, and I have a Schnauzer. You have taught me more about the in 5 min than anyone else has in many hrs. Thank you. My Schnauzer has her tail and it is beautiful and I do have to watch out for doors and such. She is very protective of me. It would not be smart for someone to show aggression toward me. She is well socialized and knows her job. She protects 3 houses when she is out of the house. Even the postman drives up to the house and honks his horn. She has never bitten anyone. Her size and the look is enough. She will get between me and anyone the thinks might be a threat. Oh! How I love how she loves me. She Sleeps on the foot of my bed.

Yeah, I will never understand the American attitude of "Lulz, I like the look, so crop, crop tail and ears go off". Or because you're annoyed they occasionally knock off stuff from tables? That's ridiculous. The tail and ears are extremely important for communication and shaping the ears to stand up this way actually takes weeks. It's not just a short procedure. Imagine your parents got a procedure on you as a baby that disables you from smiling (proper tail wagging in the case of docked tails) because they "don't like the look". The only situation where they should be docked is when there's health concerns with their tail and/or ears. Here in Germany the police use Giant Schnauzers for certain tasks and even they don't see the need to dock them, so I don't buy the "For some working dogs it's safer to get docked" excuse either. The police manages, so will you.

Show breeders and working line breeders generally don't get along much because they view the breed very differently. I'd never buy from a show breeder. IMHO breeding them just for looks is too one-sided, they totally disregard temperament and health. Just look what that approach has done to breeds like French Bulldog and English Bulldog... Buying from a pet breeder or a working line breeder is the most balanced approach (besides adopting, of course).

Connor Jared I love to see that you know when you can care for a dog!! So many selfish people are out there that get dogs because they think they are cool or cute, even if they cannot provide a lifestyle for the dog to thrive. The Siberian Husky and Belgian Malinois are most affected. The poor dogs suffer. Absolutely horrible.

I love this lady. She’s very knowledgeable. I know a Giant Schnauzer named Annie. She’s really smart and friendly, i’m glad i’ve made good friends with her because she’s a true natural guard dog. She’s a finished champion now doing agility. She’s very protective but smart about it. Not unreasonable, her default is friendly but always sorta watchful. Very great dog. She’s actually not the best at agility but she’s really eager to please.

With a lot of breeders of working breeds you typically don't have a choice with the tail part. Tails are docked when the puppies are at least 2 days old.

@@Lisse... Except cropping is typically when the puppy is already with the owner so you already have a choicd on whether or not you want to get it's eats cropped. With docking of working breeds, you are 9 times out of 10 stuck with a puppy that has a docked tail.
@Lisse...
@Lisse... 4 жыл бұрын
@@jaegerthedane3245 maybe thats the case where you live. But here in belgium before it was forbidden to crop ears and tails, dogs would only get docked tails if the next owners specifically asked for it before the puppy is born (in case of a respectable breeder, dogs are usually sold before they are actually born, really rare for a puppy to be bought after he is already born.) Now even the working dogs of the police force arent cropped or docked and they havent had any problems with it 😊 but thank god that adopting is a very popular thing in Belgium and our shelters often only have around 9 dogs.
