All commercial hammocks are made to sleep the wrong way. The right way to sleep in a hammock is transversal to how it hangs. None are made to be used this way. If you ever visit the south of Mexico or Central America look for a traditional hammock at the market. It's like a net, to keep you cool and you lay completely flat.

On a wide hammock you can use the extra flap of hammock as your pillow/head and neck support and almost always go diagonal either straight or side sleeping/fetal and use your foot to sort out calf ridge/hammock bunching i.e run it through to get rid of crimples p.s ridgeline defo essential and underquilt= amazing, with an underquilt you won't even always need a sleeping bag/top quilt inside

Good video....not many seem to realize there is a huge difference between the big box store "recreational" hammocks and an actual "camping" hammock...eleven footers are where its at for real comfort.

I'm over 6', and I just made a 12' ge hammock and it's much better than my 11' for my height. I think a good rule of thumb would be to make it as wide as you are tall, and around twice that long.

Those inflatable pillows aren't intended to be fully inflated. Most comfortable use is about half inflated. Then they cradle your head and neck nicely. You might want to give it a try - much less loft that way.

Christopher Cornette thanks for the tip! After doing more experimenting I found inflatable pillows are defiently not for me!

great vid! do you think a wider hammock with tie-outs would help keep the flapping fabric out of the way?

honestly it doesnt , not for me anyways, I have had three different hammocks that have some sort of tie out that goes to the ground on each side, really all those seem to do is hold the bug net further away from you.

also I have cut the tie outs off of each hammock also because they made that little of a difference IMO. thanks for the comment (s)# and the view!

Marshall Jones How about having knotty mods at the foot end to create a footbox(which since its adjustable I would think would help with excess fabric) than have the pullouts by the face to get the bugnet away? Looking into gathered end hammocks. Thanks.

Dan Hank dream hammock all the way! because they are completely built to order custom made fabrics lengths ect. go for an 11, or 12 ft hammock for your self. and honestly I would do the same for your son because their is no disadvantage to a longer hammock so it will allow your son to be able to grow into the hammock, but if you want to save a little cash get your son either a grand trunk hammock or a ENO hammock. width doesn't really matter all that much honestly the length is what makes the biggest difference. so a standard cut width would be fine 55-60inch. I hope this helps let me know if you have any more questions!
