This is the first video where I've actually understood (learned) the real difference between ripping saws and cross-cut saws, besides the number of teeth per inch. *Thank you* for your explanation, which is the first clear, and clearly illustrated, that I've come across in a YT woodworking video (of which I've watched hundreds).

I was told that the nibs and notch on the top of the toe were aids to sawyer to use the whole length of the saw. Anyone else heard this?

According to Disston's Lumberman Handbook: "The 'nib' near the end of a hand saw has no practical use whatever, it merely serves to break the straight line of the back of the blade and is an ornamentation only. However...I have had old timers tell me it is a nicker nib. Simply turn the saw over, place your thumb in the proper location and either pull or push the saw over the edge and it will make a nick (kerf starter) where you can begin your cut.

You are correct. It allows the woodworker to see when they have almost, but not quite, pulled the saw back before they push it forward again. This allow you to use the entire saw blade making a more efficient cut. Why have a 26 inch saw if you are only going to use 8 inches of it with each stroke?
