This was interesting. I picked up a cheap HP inkjet printer last year to print shipping labels. It worked really well for the few weeks I was using it, but then I was done mailing stuff and so it sat unused. Fast-forward six to eight months, and the damn thing wouldn't print anything whatsoever. I found out the hard way that if you let these things sit, the ink cartridges basically become useless, even after performing cleaning/maintenance. That set me back $60 or so to get replacement carts. I wish I had this knowledge sooner, because had I known I would have paid more and gotten a laser printer. I've made sure since to fire up the inkjet once every now and then and print a test page to keep things functioning, in preparation for those few times a year where I actually need to print something.

Exactly the right action to use the inkjet printer from time to time. There are Dymo and Brother printers available to just print shipping labels. They use thermal technology giving high reliability.

Very good and helpful Lon. I use third-party cartridges by EZ-INK in my Canon MG5520 ink jet printer and they work fine. I usually buy the 3-pack (3 sets) for about $15 from Amazon.

I bought a more entry level Epson Eco tank printer. I was impressed with the cheaper ink advertising. Day one, I wasn’t impressed at how slow it was. Day two of using it, the thing wouldn’t even print!! It kept cancelling my request. My dad had just bought a Brother printer, and I was highly impressed at it’s efficiency! I replaced my EcoTank and bought a smaller Brother printer than my dad’s and DON’T regret it. I’ll take more expensive ink for an efficient printer that responds quickly every time.

I just ordered Brother's brand-new Walmart-exclusive MFC-J1215W at $89, and it should be arriving today. I also checked the price of replacement "Inkvestment" tank cartridges for this printer on the Brother website, and they were running at about $98 for a set of BK/C/Y/M cartridges. For a year's worth of ink, that doesn't sound too bad. The MFC-J1215W also lacks some features present on previous models in Brother's Inkvestment line, but those are features are ones I don't need anyway. There aren't many reviews of this printer on the Walmart website yet, so I will certainly submit my own review.

Good pointers. Over the years I found the HP old two cartridge (Multi Color and Black) Use lesser ink then the 3 color cartridges. The Brother Inkvestment series of printers look good however they still use an Ink cartridge system albeit larger with a higher yield that is relatively a more costly upkeep then compared to the (You Fill It Up) Canon and Epson models. It looks like these Tank Printers are the future.

Did I miss Lon's great "full disclosure" (usually within the first minute of the video) ? --------------- So happy when I upgraded to a laser printer ! Like Lon, who rarely printed, my problem with inkjet printers was that the ink cartridges would often dry up before I was able to use it much. Getting a laser printer made it soooo much less expensive and infinitely more hassle free (than trying to refill those ink cartridges, etc) !!

I think ink subscription will incentivize the manufacturer (HP) to keep the drivers up to date for a longer period of time. The large tank refillable printers will de-incentivize that.

Thanks much for the video. It was very helpful. We've had both good and bad luck with third-party ink. They don't last as long, but long enough that we do save money that way.

As a loyal viewer and one who has been entertained on your printer live streams, I love my Epson XP-820. It does everything I need including printing on CDs which is important to me. But just like you, I rarely print on it and the ink dries up. I've looked into getting a "continuous ink" 3rd party upgrade kit. It turns your existing ink hogging printer into a tank printer. I'm on the fence but wondering if you knew about them and would consider doing a review of one to revive your dried up printer. I've seen them on Ebay if you search for your printer model and contentious ink". I trust your reviews more than any other.

I've seen those but have been reluctant for a whole host of reasons - not the least of which are my children who knock things over :). The big risks I see with third party inks is that they need to very closely match the composition of the first party product or you could have plumbing issues.

Thanks for the detailed and helpful review of the ink alternatives. I have had very good luck with third party ink cartridges and toners. I think there are good and not-so-good third party providers. I've purchased cartridges for both Canon and Epson printers from LD products (no affiliation!) who have been selling these for many years. The cost is about one third of buying from the printer's manufacturer. I also get HP toner from them. You can find cheaper products on Amazon from lesser known merchants, but I've found these less dependable if cheaper. The key is to find an established merchant with many bona-fide reviews and a money-back guarantee, not someone who simply buys cartridges in bulk from China and resells them.

Been a happy Epson Ecotank L805 (6 colour) user for photo printing for two years, it's mostly just a WIFI upgrade from the L800 and it's probably only available in Asia, out of the box the colour profiles just don't seem right and it requires paper specifically designed to work with its ink but once you make your own ICC, it's outputting very nice colours for its price, the b/w is weaker though, and it clogs so I have to print a few times a month. Two years after I'm still only half way through its original ink.

Hi. If you haven't found a printer that prints directly to cd/dvd printable discs yet, I have found that epson is still in the game with new printers. They have the epson expression 6100 and they have the expression 7100. I got the expression 7100. it has a feeding scan than scans double sided pages automatically and it prints faster and better in everyday use than a canon and an hp envy that i saw in comparisons. Since it was the only one of the two that printed directly to printable cd's, it was my obvious choice; pricepoint $199. I'm still waiting for it arrive actually, but I had to do a lot of leg work to decide what to buy when I had the same question as yours, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth.

In the UK the main Inkjet printer choices are HP and Epson. Availability of these Canon and Brother models is limited. The global pandemic has significantly affected price and availability (as with many IT and non-IT items). Its worth exploring all distribution channels including direct from the manufacturer who is less likely to increase retail prices and can offer good support packages at modest cost. Lon did a review of an HP Pagewide printer a few years ago and that still offers the best all round price, performance and quality package on the market. I should add that I'm an ex Quality Engineer with one of the largest Japanese printer manufacturers (not mentioned in this piece). I have evaluated a range of third party ink cartridges and the company in the UK I can recommend is Refresh cartridges based in SW England. Consider your printer warranty, the type of printing you are doing and how much printing to decide on using OEM or non-OEM cartridges. Rule of thumb is for HP stick with OEM only where as for Epson and Canon non-OEM are certainly an option. Until three years ago Dell presented the best value proposition in the UK Laser printer market but as they have now largely withdrawn this product line, choices include HP, Brother and Lexmark. HP has always been the market leader but Lexmark also has a strong product line. Beware of the significant cost difference between a monochrome and colour laser printer. Finally keep your printer(s) powered up as they are programmed to run cleaning cycles once in a while to ensure they are ready to print in high quality when required. Looking forward to your questions or comments.

Devil's advocate here regarding HP's Instant Ink. For $3 a month, or $36 a year, I can print up to 50 color pages a month--more than what we need. It's still cheaper than paying $70 for a set of cartridges that we would inevitably clog due to not enough usage. The HP 64 cartridge our printer uses also have the heads integrated so if it clogs, we just swap out the entire cartridge. Is it better than a laser printer? Hell no! I'll take a B&W laser any day. But we needed a color printer and thanks to "Human Malware" all the libraries are closed so I can't utilize their printing services. Anyway after the warranty period ends, I'll explore using 3rd party cartridges. The printer is a snitch and voids the warranty when a 3rd party cartridge is installed.

DO NOT GET A TANK PRINTER, especially an EPSON or CANON for casual use, You will be wasting ink a lot of ink, require non-stop maintenance and THEY HAVE A BUILT-IN SELF-DESTRUCT FUNCTION! The Ink Pad gets clogged up without frequent use and is designed TO NOT BE REPLACEABLE. I've had an Epson 2720 for 4 months and I HATE IT, requires constant attention and now I know it has a self-destruct feature. I can't even figure out how to replace the damned ink! Edit: The HP Subscription seems to be the ONLY option that is actually honest about how much you are paying and WHAT you are paying for. I know that 10c per page is the same i uesd to pay to print B&W and the Hamilton Public Library.
@denodan
@denodan 2 жыл бұрын
Trouble is they have waste unknown sponges, and when these fill up, shuts to printer down and becomes uses the waste sponge has a counter and when it reaches this and the sponge gets to soaked with ink the printer will no longer work. Cannon are bad and do a head clean everytime you use them and wastes a lot of ink compared to Epson. A laser printer has a waste toner tray and these are replaceable and can either recycle if your up to it, or buy a new tray, put it in and goes. unlike ecotank printers have a limited lifespan due to the sponge, so may still end up more costly than a colour laser in the long run. A cheaper option maybe to convert your cartridge printer to an ecotank system. The waste sponge method of the ecotank printers are a ripoff and limited lifespan. That sponge counter is at its full count then printer no longer will work.

Those ink cartridges have caused nothing but financial burden. Subscriptions? I wonder what marketing guy thought of that. What's ink anyway that you'd even need a subscription?? Ink tanks are the way to go. And it proves that all the things they've been saying for decades to justify the cost of ink cartridges are BS.

I have NEVER had a bad experience using 3rd party inks, and the ink supplier I now use (L D Products) actually saved me a huge amount of time when HP shut down several services on the printer when they changed the software in an update to detect third party inks. I find this reprehensible! After all, I paid for the printer, therefore I own it. And the warrantee is long gone. It is my choice whether or not I choose to use 3rd party inks in a printer I own. HP is not subsidizing the printer in any way! I will probably never purchase another HP printer. What is next? Are they going to shut off my Internet on my HP laptop because I purchased it from a 3rd party vendor?? By the way, L D Products was the entity which told me that rolling back the software would take me back to being able to use all functions on the printer again! AND, I have recently read that they are one of the best suppliers of 3rd party inkjet inks, while saving me a whole lot of money.
