Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm

Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm

Күн бұрын

At Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm, we grow, harvest, dry, distill and infuse over 20 aromatic plants to make the ingredients for our small batch botanical products: www.okanaganlavender.com/
Our Workshop Wednesday series highlights our favourite herbs from the garden and how they can be used to create lovely products with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand at home!
In this video, we show you how to identify different varieties of lavender, harvest fresh lavender into bundles and remove the buds for cooking and crafting!
We also have a couple of lavender recipes on our blog:
- Lavender Ice Cream: www.okanaganlavender.com/blog...
- Lavender Hot Chocolate: www.okanaganlavender.com/blog...

Right?! So many useful tips in this video, too: helping ppl decide simply to begin treating friendly bees w/respect in the first place (& to relax if possible & everyone's happier)-- AND telling em exactly HOW to do that. **Plus** the preemptive tip about eating a cracker or bread if you end up coughing from lavender dust (bc water doesn't seem to work). Like I am PSYCHED to be armed w/that tip ahead of time! Just...an absolutely radiant goddess of kindly knowledge & preparedness. Love so much.

I didn't realise Lavender had so much more use, than using the scent for stress relieve and keeping pests away such as mozzies, and help to relieve headaches I wouldn't have thought you can use it in cooking etc, very interesting learning, and love the respect for the bees, don't see enough of that unfortunately...

I can't remember if it was French or Spanish Lavender or Grosso Lavender, but back in 2019 I went out on my deck at dusk to get some fresh Rosemary to use in a pork chop recipe I was making for dinner. The Rosemary pot was next to the Lavender plants and at the time the pots and plants were all the same size. The Lavender wasn't in bloom and in the dusky light I gathered Lavender instead of Rosemary. The pork chops came out delicious and it was after dinner when I was putting away the leftover "Rosemary" sprigs that I noticed they smelled oddly of Lavender and realized my mistake. I had had Lavender in other people's food before, but that's the first time I'd cooked with it.

This was a lovely video! I truly appreciate your careful details and the advice about being calm among the bees and to shake the lavender to encourage the bees to go to another bush. I planted 6 lavender grossos, what I think you have as the hybrid you mentioned. I have clay soil, so I dug an 18 inch wide by 12 inch deep hole for each one and filled the holes with compost, sand, rocks and perlite. I mounded the lavender 2 or 3 inches above the soil. The area next to my walkway is on a slight slope. Also, I get more than 6 hours or sunlight in zone 9 so I feel like they have a great shot at success. I'm excited to make lavender bundles for drying so I can spread that lovely smell in every room in the forms of sashes. I need to get myselfa sickle!! I have an ant problem at the moment, so the hope is that they ants will scram when the lavender begins to bloom. Thanks for your video!!

I have also been told that the scent can cause some prone to fits to trigger fits. Are there any that grow better inside of containers to those that grow better outside of same, and is there any insects other than bees and wasps that are attracted to Lavender also if I were to consider to grow in containers is there better sized type to consider, please. You meant if you want lemonade next week instead, you could have just harvest more from your endless supply of lavender XD I bought lavender from local market, because I didn't know there are different type. I got, I think, "Fringed" lavender, I think they also call it French lavender. I did go back to the market to ask, and apparently they don't know what they are selling. But it's lavender. I'm just wondering if I can use French lavender in food. When our port open to accept international mails again, I will definitely order from you guys.

If you have a species name and a cultivar name, that is the best way to learn about the type of lavender you have.

Now I know why I was stung for the first time in over 40 years - I didn't practice bee etiquette! I was in a hurry and just plunged my hand into the bush and apparently, I annoyed that one little bee.

Does lavender like mulch around it?

@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 Жыл бұрын
Lavender loves sandy loam soil and good air circulation. You could use mulch, but I would keep it in a thin layer. 🌿
