Em: Great video as usual! Just one suggestion. At some point you might discuss any potential safety issues in handling paraloid. You may have done that in the past but it doesn’t hurt to retell it. There are some issues with breathing vapors and avoiding skin and eye contact. I just thought the public should always take proper precautions when handling chemicals such as these.

If you need a yt channel to teach you really basic safety, YOUR Parents FAILED. It's acetone bro lol nail polish remover.

@@footrot17 Unless your parents are chemists, they probably know little nothing about appropriate safety precautions for handling organic solvents. Active hobbyists and professional preparators face vastly more potential exposure than those who use fingernail polish remover. Sharing your cavalier attitude toward safety, which may be fine for you, is irresponsible and dangerous. Do what you wish, but don't make fun of those who are utilizing and advocating proper safety measures. More than one of my colleagues have died young for not doing so.

You are awesome. I am wondering how thin you can mix this without it not be effective? I do not like fossils that are painted to be too shiny. Is there a more precise measuring formula?

Would this method be useful for bones that are a bit chalky? I have some alligator bones that are somewhat brittle that I would like to preserve. Would I need a thicker solution? Thanks!

Really helpful video thanks very much - can the paraloid solution be left in the jar for a few weeks or does it need to be kept in an airtight container?
@EmGems

I leave mine for a few months in a jar and it seems to bes fine! But yes if it's airtight and kept out of sunlight it should last! :)

it's available to use paraloid B72 dissolved in acetone at a 1 to 50 ratio to protect some teeth fossils which had repaired or restored?

Great video! What do you think about spray application of paraloid b72 on metal, to make anti-corrosion layer? Have you encountered something like this?
@EmGems
@EmGems Жыл бұрын
It's a great idea but I think the paraloid would clog up the spray bottle very quickly so you would have to trial it and see if it would be possible

Sorry another comment from me…! Do you use any matting agents (fumed silica etc) to make the solution less glossy? If so do you have a preferred agent and a mix ratio?

I’ve read that Industrial Methylated Spirits do that. Use 50/50 mix with acetone. But I’ve not tried it myself.

I was wondering if the same solution would preserve a crystalized fossil? I found a beautiful crystalized ammonite, but I worry that it will fall apart if I don't coat it in anything.
@gregorybrown8850
@gregorybrown8850 Жыл бұрын
If the crystals are pyrite or other unstable mineral, coating will do little to prevent deterioration because coatings do not cover perfectly and most are somewhat moisture and oxygen permeable. If the specimens are pyrite, the only way to arrest (or at least retard) the chemical reaction that leads to deterioration is to keep the specimen in a stable, low humidity (below 50%) humidity at the very least and, if possible, enclosed in a barrier container with oxygen scavenger. The latter is probably beyond most people's capabilities, but stable low humidity is a must.

Are there any water based substitues that can be used instead?
@EmGems
@EmGems 4 ай бұрын
Hi Joel, I haven't come across any yet - but a very easy alternative is using clear nail varnish, it never needs to be mixed and comes in a handy little pot! This option wouldn't work as an adhseive though, but would add a lovely shine (and it can be reversed if required). Hope this helped!
