All About Summer Planting - In this video I go over my planting practices in the summer. I keep planting through the summer every year. I think getting plants that are only marginally winter hardy planted in the summer is the best strategy to have them survive the first winter. I water plants heavily and then I let dry out. I try not to baby them to much.

HortTube with Jim Putnam I am so sorry. I have a place in my back yard that gets cooked from noon till 6-7:00 PM. I saw your video on thought full sun deer resistant plants. So I plan to put agapanthus and saliva. But the hydrangea stumped me.

Minor comment regarding your suggestion regarding summer planting in zone 5 / 6 . We don't normally plant in the middle of the summer when temps are high 80's and above. Especially when we don't have good rain fall levels like this year 2020. We have far better success waiting and planting in the fall - mid Sept to late fall.. This is true for perennials, shrub and trees. It's common knowlege that we get great root development during the fall season. Most tree providers prefer fall planting over any other season. Of course we always suggest a good layer of mulch to make it through our cold winters. Thanks for allowing me to add to your body of knowledge. Love your videos! Great video Jim, I'm in zone 5 Newfoundland, Canada, and I plant throughout the summer with no bad results so far. I wish I had found your channel before I planted my shrubs. I didn't leave them raised like you do, hopefully it doesn't hurt them to much. I'm supervising them carefully:)

Thank you for the info. I took a cutting last fall from my mother-in-law's hydrangeas. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what type it is. My mother-in-law passed away, husband and I inherited her home. I'm in zone 9b, I think. I was thinking fall to plant the baby hydrangeas and you confirmed that for me.

That is gorgeous! You have come so far since you have purchased your home. I am just amazed at the work this spring/summer you have put in. Wow 🤩 I am zone 7 too and I plant thru summer usually but this year we had no rain for almost 3 weeks and humid 105 degree days, so I have some coneflowers, a butterfly, and a cascade butterfly bush in some shade until a little cooler 90’s weather to not stress them and me. We have too many water needs (pool, pond, garden, and tons of flowers- my oasis) on a well. Kind of crazy to say 90’s is cooler. I just mulched a thick layer in the grueling heat ( drenched me 😝 ) - anything for my plants. I love everything you have planted! All looks amazing!

Thank you! You answered two questions I had. I wondered why a garden center had full sun plants under shade cloths. I was buying a trellis and took a stroll around the plants. I noticed a plant with pretty green leaves and thought what is this? Turns out it was a Sunshine Ligustrum! There wasn't a speck of yellow on any of them. I bought two and was wondering how to introduce them to the sun.

I live in zone six and I've always heard you should wait until fall to plant, but those are always the plants that don't come back as well after winter. Thanks for confirming why that is!

I've had good luck planting even in the hottest part of the summer here in Dallas (zone 8a) as long as the plant gets shade during the middle of the day.

Jim, thanks for your videos--they are always so educational. What about using a starter fertilizer like Biotone Plus by Espoma at this time of year when planting hardy perennials and shrubs? I generally use that in the hole regardless of when I plant because things generally seem to root in better and more rapidly with it. I don't tend to add in slow release fertilizers like Osmocote or do supplemental fertilizing with MiracleGro, but I do still add in Biotone. Please advise.

I always learn something from you! I have three hydrangea macrophyllas in terra cotta pots, and just picked up a paniculata variety that’s hardy in zones 5-8. I am in zone 10a, Southern California. Here Fall is warm, winter is in the 40’s-60’s during the day, 40’s at night and sometimes into the high 30’s. Summers are mild, currently our high temps are in the mid 70’s 🤣 Basically it never stays very hot or very cold, and I’m 6 miles from the beach. Will my hydrangeas survive? They are only getting morning sun, otherwise they scorch. I just wonder if they need a hard freeze to thrive. Thank you! ☺️

I live in Zone 7a in No. Virginia and if I can't plant most plants in April, I wait until October 1. I've learned that from experience. Also, if I see a plant in the ground starting to wilt, I take it out and put it in a container to get it out of the afternoon sun.

I live in Michigan, zone 5 and use my pond filter clean out water on my plants. Can I continue this or is it best to stop now too? Thank you !

As long as you are spreading it out a lot it shouldn't be a problem. Organic fertilizers will just stop working when the soil cools

great to know, I have two mophead hydrangeas that I planted in too much sun that I need to transplant, but I'm in zone 8b and have 99 degree days ahead of me, I'm going to wait to transplant until September. I also have mock orange that just gets too much hot afternoon sun, also want to transplant her (I think its also in the hydrangea family, definitely similarly high water needs)

Yikes. I just planted a summer crush. I’m in zone 9b. We have been get tons of rain and over cast. Hoping I can get these little plant through the August month. Do u recommend fertilizing in my zone? Last winter we rarely dipped below freezing.

Is it ok if I prune a hydrangea when I plant it now? I’m in zone 7 and want to prune the hydrangea into a standard (tree shape) but not sure if I should prune that much now or wait until dormancy

Why do you elevate the crown of the hydrangea like that? I just planted a hydrangea and did not do that. Should I dig it up and leave the crown as you have? Zone 7b Charlotte clay soil. Thanks

You really should leave them up a little in your clay soils. The mulch will take up the rest of the space. I do it to make sure the crown of the plant never stays wet. Plus the plant will sink a little from the loose soil under it. I leave it up to you as to whether to raise it up now

I just bought a new house in zone 7b and will be doing lots of fall planting including some evergreen screening shrubs, some semi-evergreen perennials and some tender perennials and spring bulbs. The soil test says nitrogen and phosphorous are very deficient as well as a low PH so it seems fertilizing when planting would be critical, but when fall planting on past properties I haven’t normally fertilized those things that will still have leaves when the weather changes because I don’t want to push new tender growth that would get burned. What would you advise?

Wow. Is that the African Rose Mallow? That looks amazing. This is definitely what I need to bring color to the space while my plants grow in. BTW We are still planting in New England. It seems to me if it is B and B or container -- it is happier in the ground, provided there is drip irrigation...

I agree with you that in the ground is better than in the container. Mahogany slender is the name of the hibiscus

Hmm I’ve been afraid to do more plantings bc I’ve heard it’s to hot right now (I’m in 7b) Thanks for the advice! Question for you I transplanted a few green giants in April and one of them I just noticed has a second tree growing out of the base. Should I prune out the smaller one so as not to compete with the larger one? The larger is about 8-9 ft. Learned a ton from your channel and also enjoy your garden bc we are in similar zones

Jim, I am confused. The Salvia and Agapanthus are full sun plants . But Hydrangeas need shade.

That osmanthus will block a lot of the sun on that hydrangea. It has more to do with roots staying cool than the top of the plant. The thing that makes hydrangeas, azaleas, pieris, and others shade plants is the roots are super shallow on them.

they like the soil to be a bit acid ph about 4.7 , like azalea and rhodondenderon. you can use garden peat, i am dutch so i hope that translated well, and mix it in the soil where you planted it.
