This video explains the idea of a touch up in tattooing and provides a deep dive into what exactly a touch up is, whether or not a touch up costs money, as well as some general tips for clients regarding touch ups. I am a professional tattooer of eight years and am speaking from my experience as an artist and shop owner.
Healing a tattoo properly is important and even when done properly, sometimes a touch up is needed. This video is intended to give clients more information on the subject than just a basic definition and my aim is to arm clients that are serious about tattoo collecting with knowledge that will help them clarify things that are only apparent to people in the tattoo industry.
All of the tattoos shown in this video were done by me.
If you would like you see more of my tattoo work, visit my website at www.jameswithee.com and follow me on instagram for my latest work.
If you'd like to inquire about getting a tattoo by me, please visit the contact page on my website mentioned above and fill out the form there.
Thanks for watching!

I'm late but I clicked right away! Welcome back! Great video topic. My tattoo artist does offer one free touch up within the first year of completion of the tattoo. I'm still a beginner so I know during my healing time, I did cause a few minor scratches. The tattoo is on my right wrist so I'm constantly coming in contact with the area.

Got a piece 2 weeks ago and some of the pink in the color didn't get good saturation. I asked the artists if we could just do a darker color over it. Making my appointment tomorrow but he also said he guarantees his work and its free. Edit the piece was fixed yesterday came out great and the artist owned it. He said he tried going too light with the color tone and it just didn't stick.

So glad to have another video! Always learning from you! 👌🏼 I want you’re opinion on something. I got my sleeve done last year, and my artist was a guest artist. Loved the outcome of the sleeve but there’s a part in the sleeve where he had to work around another piece from another artist (the tiger if you go and watch my videos) I feel the blending of the two tattoos from the tiger to the acropolis doesn’t blend nicely and it does bother me abit. Since he’s not going to be back for awhile do I go to the shop that I originally got it at and talk with them about a touch up or wait until he comes back and have him touch his own work up again. (I don’t mind paying if I have to because it’s been over a year) Thank you and hope you’re able to shed some light and your professional opinion 🙏🏼👊🏼
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a unique situation with no definitively correct answer. If I were u I’d just go with your most regularly visited artist and ask them to blend the tattoos together. They’re more likely to do it for u even if it’s not their original doing since you’ve already collected from them multiple times (if u do indeed have someone like this that u can ask). And it’s convenient for u cuz u don’t have to wait for the other artist to come back. Maybe contact the artist that guest spotted first though and ask them if they’ll be back soon that way you at least give them the chance to do it for u if possible

@aquana
@aquana 4 жыл бұрын
Oh you're back! I always enjoy your content :) I can't imagine not wanting to do a free touch-up. I finished a six-session full colour sleeve last winter and after the 5th session, a small but very central part of the piece healed completely wrong (basically the eye of a monster, the first thing your eye is drawn to on my shoulder if I'm wearing a sleeveless shirt, made it look blind instead of a glowing neon blue iris on a dark black cornea, looked like complete ass). I usually heal very well and don't fuck around with new tattoos, so this was a surprise. He fixed it during our last session and it healed just fine on the second try, but had it gotten fucked on the last session and he charged me to fix it... idk man, I probably would have paid anyway because I don't want a shitty-looking tattoo, but I would really question his pride in his work if he was perfectly content with me running around with an obviously fucked up tattoo. I wouldn't want my name attached to something like that and since so many artist recs are word of mouth, well... he'd be ruining his own reputation IMO. I've already had multiple strangers admire the sleeve and ask who did it and this is only its first summer. The artists you talk about at 03:26 sound like arrogant assholes tbh. Blaming the client for something that didn't heal 100% flawlessly... it's skin, not paper, you can follow instructions perfectly and still get a heal that needs a small fix. That's a really good way to encourage your clients to not recommend you to anyone.
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
aquana I feel u. Yeah it’s always possible for small things to go wrong even if it’s not anyone’s fault. Shit happens. Luckily, most artists care more about the heal than the client does so a free touch up is the norm

Don’t find guys who are so honest when it comes to their work. Great to see you back bro, quick question I got an awesome tattoo sleeve done and I’m very happy with it. The only issue is that most of the white lines / white highlights have turned to a brown color. Is this normal? Can it be touched up? What could be the cause? Love your videos man! Great to finally have you back!
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
It’s prolly cuz your skin produces melanin to bring itself back to its normal tone to protect against uv rays. Happens on ppl with tan skin or white ppl that get in the sun a lot soon after the heal. U can go over the white again but the same thing may happen. Hard to say

@JamesWithee

Yeah they are but some blowouts are best left alone. Sometimes thickening a line to fix one is worse than just living with it. Especially if it’s in an area where blowouts are common and it might just blowout again with a thicker outline on the second pass

But on one of the lines in the middle it just *looks* odd, like the whole straight in the middle can look a bit crooked even when my body is straight. This is rather small imperfection, but do you think i should ask for a touch up somehow? Or you think we can blow it and i should stop being such a perfectionist?

Good to see you again James. I have a question regarding touch ups. How picky can a client be without pissing off the tattooer? I went in to have my second sleeve finished (or was supposed to be anyways) by the same artist a few weeks ago, but there's about 5 spots that I'd like to get filled in a bit more/darkened up cause they just don't look right after the heal. The last session was already a bit of a touch up one, along with finishing off the top of the shoulder. So he only charged me for the few hours he worked on the shoulder. Would I be asking too much by wanting another touch up session? Defiantly not satisfied by how it's looking right now, but at the same time don't wanna be the client who's super picky and a pain in the ass. I did tip the guy pretty good on both sleeves
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
It kinda depends on the circumstance. If you’ve already done a touch up session, there’s a good chance you’re artist already thinks your tattoo is as good as they can possibly make it. As long as you’re polite when u ask and the things you are talking about will actually help the piece, you’ll be fine. Just be prepared to pay if you’re artist decides it isn’t really a touch up, but another pass that enhances rather than restores

Perfect timing with this video! Do you think it's a good idea to ask your artist to do a touch-up (doesn't matter if it ends up being free or not) when you are already there getting another tattoo from them? I figured it would save breaking down and setting up again down the line, but I was curious is there is something I'm not thinking about that would make it tedious for them. I'm getting my 2nd piece next month but the first one has a tiny spot that didn't take the color and I would love to kill two birds with one stone.

That’s actually my favorite time for clients to ask for a touch up. Like u said I already have all my stuff ready and don’t have to spend money on another setup or schedule a separate appointment. The only exception to that is if the touch up will take a decent amount of time and we’re doing a one shot tattoo that is going to take all day already. If that’s the case I schedule a separate time rather than touching up one tattoo and failing to finish the new one. Still stands that that’s the best time to bring it up though

My original artist is in the wind...are you able to suggest an artist that is comfortable in touch up. The tat is fading out from age. It's my most favorite

With touch ups are the healing process the same as when you got the tattoo originally

How often do you get touch ups ? My colour tattoos are almost 3 years old while my black ones are 4-5 years old. I often wear sunscreen but before / after swimming I don't bother because the chlorine washes it off. I swim a lot. I do exfoliate and shave my tattoos. So my tattoos are in good condition. How often do you refresh yours ?

I don’t get touch ups unless there is an initial problem with the heal. Which has never happened to me personally

@@JamesWithee I am genetically Indian so of the tattoos I have, the white (lightsabres: Palpatine vs Yoda, eyes: Gohan) and the black (Gohan's hair, the background of the Sidious - Yoda duel), and yellow (Sidious' eyes) have a slight brown tinge to them. I'm not as dark as a South Indian or an African but I look Arab. Tattooist said people with darker skin need multiple applications

Thoughts on using opaque greys versus traditional grey wash?
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I prefer grey wash, by far. A lot of great color artists do opaque black and white tattoos from time to time, but I suspect it’s simply because they’re more comfortable with the method of application as it’s the same as color. I do a lot of color and a lot of black and grey though, and while it might be fun to do opaques I’d rather just use grey wash cuz it ages better, isn’t as susceptible to adverse effects from sun exposure, and works on more skin types. Opaques are better for cover ups though for sure

How much would a rework cost then usually? Curious on the rework process now
@JamesWithee

It’s all quoted on a case by case basis. Usually the artist estimates how long it will take them and charge hourly

I just got a tattoo last week and I work outside working with propane cylinders in the heat of Texas. The first day felt like it was horrible since I was sweating so bad, but a week later I think I can say that’s starting it’s coming along nicely.
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
If u wanna be really safe, a week so it is finished peeling and sweat / bacteria from attics and ladders don’t ruin the heal. I’d say minimum 2 or 3 days though so the wound is at least sealed with scabs. Wear loose fitting clothing that covers the tattoo and try to take it easy if u gotta work though. Just be the guy that drags ass for a few days as long as it won’t get u fired

I’ve had to get my foot retouched. My color seems to fall out.
@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the foot is like that especially on the sides and obviously the bottom. Gotta try to get the tattoo above the area where the skin feels like your palm. Dry skin on the top of the foot can affect the heal too. Hope that sheds some light
