A fascinating echo device from the 60's that didn't use tape, but is still Electro-Mechanical and 100% Analog. Let's check these out!
Models I missed:
1. Fender Dimension IV
If you want one of these type devices, check out a web site called Stuff Alert. It can auto search ebay and email you when something you want turns up.

Thanks, I appreciate your feedback. Electro-mechanical echo devices have always fascinated me. I have the tape echoplex, several spring devices, and a few oil cans... now to just find the Echosonic, Copicat, Echofonic, and Echorec devices.... well at the kind of price I can handle anyway. Still to this day, the exact formulations for the Tel-Ray Adineko disc, and wipers isn't known. None of our basement engineers have been able to successfully clone one, although a few reported discs that worked somewhat. At one time, rumors spread that the oil inside was cancer causing, and with people not knowing what it was, many units were destroyed by bad experimentation. If you don't scratch the disc, and use only LB65 oil, it should last a long long time.

Yes... there were few produced commercially, but were a DIY project in the back of magazines in the 60's. I'd prefer to build a plate type reverb here if the materials fall in my lap.

Uncle Doug, Did you happen to see the Fender Echo - Reverb on EBay? It’s a buy now or best offer and it’s Priced at $299. My wife won’t let me have it. I just bought all the parts for your “Uncle Doug Reverb Build”and she said no more right now. (I need to sell some guitars or amps) Sorry for the sidetrack but this unit on eBay doesn’t work and is being sold for repair or parts. It is auction number 202328792303 . It’s a very cool looking unit that looks like one of these can echo units with a Reverb unit beside it.

They build pedals that mimic the sound of the oil can. I have a CB Adineko on my board since I got it. Love the atmospheric trails and blurry repeats. As for a real one, I liked the looks of the Tel Ray Echo-Ver-Brato, the blue one. I bet it costs a pretty wallet to score one of those.

Great presentation of an effective and apparently rare device. I would like to have had a seat at the table when the engineers were designing this. I enjoy seeing a piece of technology that did not exist become a fully functioning device - especially old stuff. Engineers and designers did not have software or the internet to rely on. Most would have been fortunate to have an air conditioned environment and a slide rule. 121:45 Fender knobs on a Gibson amp? My eyes are burning. :-)
@DeadKoby

I'm pretty amazed myself at the technology in the Adineko... Essentially they made a moving capacitor surface. Those are the stock knobs on that Gibson. There's a few 60's models with that type.
@Slugg-O
@Slugg-O 6 жыл бұрын
Stock knobs? I learned more than I thought I did. Old gear intrigues me because much of it was designed from scratch using nothing but a pencil and brain power. They couldn't always modify an existing product, and they certainly did not have access to limitless information resources. That moving capacitor idea was quite a trick. Thank you for the reply.

If you do an image search on the GA-4RE, you'll find there's two knob types... one is the numbered knobs like mine... the other is a round silver face knob like you'd find on a home console hi-fi. The GA-4RE I have is pretty close to original... other than replaced electrolytic caps.

I bought a Gibson version of this device in 1976 for 20 dollars at a garage sale. It looked like a small amp head wrapped in brown Tolex ( slightly different than the one in the video ). I loved it....I knew one other guitar player in town who had one of the first Roland Space Echoes but they were very expensive. I used it for about six months at home and then formed my first band. WARNING the Gibson unit has a tube preamp in it that uses a 300VDC B+ supply for the tubes. These units came with a 2 wire power cord that had an unpolarized plug. Imagine my surprise when the first time I went to sing into a microphone with my guitar in my hands at the amazing blue burning flash that jumped from the mic to my lips. I didn't keep it for long after that. Pretty rad unit though! Oh to be fourteen again :)

Excellent comprehensive run-down of all known oil can delays. I'm charmed by the use of grillcloth scrap on some of these heads, and the name "vagrant" on one of the later tel ray originals, which, probably sarcastically, even features the full address of the company on the front of the unit! Have you tried, or heard of anyone successfully trying, to add a provision that varies the motor speed? It would seem to me that changing speeds (particularly slowing it down) would create an even more haunting effect.....provided it doesn't run the risk of burning out the motor in the process! These units are fascinating, and I can't believe that I somehow missed them when they were originally produced! Those motors were probably originally designed for 110 or 115 VAC. Today’s line voltages in USA can vary, but generally are on average, 120- 129 volts, which is 10-19 volts higher! For an original motor unit, I would only use with a step down transformer, to ensure as long life as possible.

Just because I've seen a variety of these performing differently, sounding like poorly biased record heads... since it's different, was there any way to sneak or approximate a bias oscillator in the drum spinning?? if the oil has a conductive nature...being a conductor it should have some resistance reading with a meter if you stick the 2 probes in. This is one of the issues I'm investigating based of the replacement oils being sold......whether some are selling legit oil or just mineral oils as a counterfeit.......when it comes to repairing a unit that's not functioning with the can when the can appears to be intact without defect......the weak link

The wipers being mentioned as graphited....really translates to black rubber.......the rubber is colored with carbon...hence graphite, and suggests its really normal rubber. The situation of carbon coloring is one of the potential issues that might manifest when using the eyeletted circuit boards as Fender used in their amplifiers......the circuit board becoming conductive instead of acting as an insulator......they were also wax coated relative to moisture....since water can be conductive and could enhance the issue

Do any of the units have a knob to change the speed of the motor I figure the slower the motor the longer the delay time but since it doesn't hold the charge long the slower the speed the more regeneration you'd want to extend the repeats.i really wish they would remake these things maybe design them with a bigger disc and multiple heads variable speed put a reverb tank in with it maybe pair it with a rotary speaker or some kinda vibrato or tremolo probably would cost so much to make that no one would be able to afford it.but really someone needs to start making old germanium transistors and bbd chips so the good old pedals can be made affordable

DK, I have the parts to restore one, the Fender Variable Delay Echo-Reverb. The pots and cap latest date date is 1968. My research has brought me to your channel which I’m just now exploring. Great stuff. On my unit the chassis has been molested. No new holes, just clipped wires and it has what appears to be a failed attempt at a high gain preamp. The transformer appears good and It had no oil can. However, I have acquired a NOS oil can and a second one sold as is for parts. I don’t know what dual 12AX7 schematic was intended to be used. The two unknown value trim pots on the rear are missing. Any guidance, pictures of guts and and advice would be appreciated. Offline I’m at gmail as quayhog53.

I we'll try and hunt you down a schematic there are different version numbers they had liked Mark 2 3 4 something like that. Which model do you have?

DeadKoby unsure, that’s the issue. I have all the TelRay schematics on pdf. There are two that are dual 12AX7. There isn’t enough there to determine specifics. Email for pictures

Ask the user OilCanDelay on the Tel-Ray Oil can board. He's a veteran of these devices, if anyone has it, it's him.

DeadKoby I’m a member of the board and there hasn’t been much activity there. My recent posts are the only posts in months. The silence there is deafening. I posted Ray Lubow’s LA Times obituary which I found in my research.

I came across a Standel Duette 2 in PERFECT condition (caps,dropping resistors ,and cord replaced/fuse added)other than the scratched disk. Was hoping you might know of a source. I’d DEFINITELY be interested. Here’s a short clip of it during an occasion when it was sort of working well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLN6f6mAxq3WfWg.html

There's someone on the Oil Can Addicts board that made a disc... there's no commercial source.

good lord, no pedal sounds like this at all, they just dont get the 'mechanical quality' nor the right 'fluidity' of them, wish they were still around

Indeed there's nothing that captures that weirdness like the real thing.

It's a lo-fi sound, but some people liked it enough to reproduce THAT sound with modern electronics. I like that it's electro-mechanical and weird.

@@DeadKoby - I like lofi, I use vintage samplers to get good lofi sounds/tones; I'm not sure to what extent one's input determines the output sounds/pitches of this pedal, though ... ? Ie, is it more generative than 'processive' [of the input] ... ?

It has a lower mid-range frequency peak, so the echos sound "underwater".... there's also no erase head, leading to some crazy ghost effect.

Keep an eye out for them... sometimes you can REALLY get a deal. A perfectly healthy one brings 500-700$.... I bought the Standel Reverbalux from someone who didn't know much about it, and was just selling off surplus electronics.... so I got that one for 100$
