@@ablewilling2778 It's not a dead rubber when the number 1 ranking is at stake. Actually, come to think of it, it is never a dead rubber between these two teams; remember how the All Blacks sent their A team straight to SA in 2014 and a second string side to Argentina, even though they already had the title in the bag?

Enjoyed the comments which reflect the rivalry. As a ten year old I remember watching the Springboks play their first game in 1965 against our small province (Poverty Bay). We scored first with a penalty and were euphoric. Fulltime and it was a million points to 3. South Africa were undoubtedly the 'world champions' prior to the actual World Cup era. They regularly beat NZ in NZ, beat us four nil in the 1949 test series and it wasn't until1956 that we finally won a test series against them and 1996 when SA were beaten in a series in SA. Intimidation has always been a huge part of the Springbok game. In 1970, the legendary lock Frik du Preez punched our halfback Chris Laidlaw semi conscious and in 1976 van Heerden (?) used Pole Whiting's head as a trampoline requiring multiple stitches. In 1970, Fergie Mc Cormick stiff-armed winger Syd Nomis who lost a couple of teeth. (The SA ref was a dentist!) I could go on but for me, these memories background the beautiful rivalry today.

@Manuel Dumont This video is literaly about NZ vs SA and SA has only beaten NZ in a world cup knock out match once. And that victory was under questionable circumstances. The All Blacks have knocked the Springboks out of a World Cup twice and beaten them 3 times. Outside of World Cups the Springboks have been dominated since the introduction of neutral referees
@biggest23
@biggest23 2 жыл бұрын
@Manuel Dumont …..Mr Cumberdale’s response seems to have flown at too high an altitude for your logic processes to spot it. Essentially, he accurately states that if SA meets the AB’s in A RWC, they either lose or get knocked out, or in other words, SA needs to avoid getting their bum smacked by the AB’s to find success in a RWC. SA’s RWC record is quite literally dependent on avoiding the AB’s.

@Me-ex7qg
@Me-ex7qg 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevesteve6189 Citing a wrong decision doesn't amount to evidence of bias, all that proves was that the call or miss call was incorrect. You're assuming a motive for incorrect calls and assumptions can not be used as evidence. You're also assuming that more incorrect calls go against the Springboks than the All Blacks. There is no conclusive evidence of this either. If all the calls that wrongly go against the Springboks are due to bias then how do you explain the calls that go against the All Blacks? Predictably your response will be that calls don't go against the All Blacks like they do the Springboks. Once again there is no evidence of this claim, when you look at the penalty counts over the last 20 games you will see the Springboks were on the right side of the penalty count more often than not. The irony is that the only consistently lop-sided penalty counts between the two teams were in favor of South Africa when they played at home against the All Blacks in the amateur era.

The '81 tour, as a 10 year old, i watched it unfold with dad, and it still lingers in the memory like it was yesterday, protests, riots, tear gas, a light aircraft dropping flour bombs on to Eden Park in the deciding third test, decking All Black prop Gary Knight, a mid week clash against Waikato cancelled after protesters invaded Rugby Park, Hamilton, scattering drawing pins, tacks and nails all over the field, oh, and Allan Hewson kicked a last minute, long range penalty to win that 3rd test 25-22, clinching the series 2-1, when I think of the rivalry between these two rugby mad nations, 1981 stands tall above other epic encounters....

Which was especially egregious as he wasn't penalised, carded or even cited. At least the Boks usually get all 3 when they are naughty. Yes it was South Africa that the All Blacks held in the highest esteem! In the old days you had to win the game and the Punch ups. Kevin Skinner and Peter Whiting are legends here in NZ. The South Afrikans Ref was asked why he didn't award a penalty try to the All Blacks in the final test when Bruce Robertson was taken out of play without the ball. South Africa didn't even have TV then or certainly not live TV. And Beuzeiutenhyp or what ever his name was answered " Because I have to live in this country" I'll never forget that. I have raised this with my South African friends and they weren't aware of it! I Hope South Africa does well, it is going through a hard time, inverse racialism is as bad if not worse than original racism, as you would think that we humans should learn!

I liked the video but to be clear these moments did not "shape" a rivalry. The rivalry between these two teams comes from way back when, these things just continue that rivalry. To be honest, New Zealand have been so dominant since South Africa's reintroduction into the sport that the rivalry has probably been diminished in their eyes (just a hunch I get) over the past couple of decades.

NZ always respect SA and the Rivalry, the fact that whoever chose these moments(I suspect an Englishman, neither a Saffa or a kiwi) to be the ones that shaped the rivallry, just shows they know very little about the rivallry. Special mentions, the 57-0 drubbing by NZ in Albany, their win in Pretoria in 96 to claim a first ever series in the republic as well as the two World Cup finals that they've contesed in, both won by the Springboks... long live the fierce rivalry between the ABs and SA, our traditional foe and nothing else matters...🇳🇿🇿🇦 forever

Still makes me giggle, that the first player to the breakdown when the ref was attacked, was Richie McCaw....

I remember late 1960's early 1970's tours to South Africa where All Blacks were divided. Some stayed in five star hotels on one side of the street. While others stayed on the other side not being able to cross the street to be with All Black team mates.

This is ridiculous. There was not one play from the 1956 series, from the 1960s or 70's either. 1981 is left out as well. It's all from 1995 and on. At least the 1995 Final was still amateur.

Rivalry properly started with 1937 Springbok win in NZ. 1956 was the first Springbok test series loss since 1896, home or away.

Why so much on Lomu ...may he rest in peace...he never performed against Boks.....the ref tackle was great....doesnt matter how good or bad it was.....it landed being good for rugby for a time......but refs need another wakeup call...which i think Rassie is doing a good job of.....but a long way to go still.......either way thanks for the video....

Lomu was a huge fella. He physically dominated everyone who came in his way to the try line. But the Afrikaners seem to have an unlimited supply of strong tall brutes. Hence, he never scored against the Boks.

Boys will be boys. If the Springboks - as they will always be to me, and my lot cannot have a civilised mid pitch discussion, what has the game become. I think us older ones already know. When grabbing a guy by the shoulder becomes a dangerous high tackle I can only shake my head and pick up my knitting.
