I am Tristan, I am building a 400 SF cabin at the back of my house. I plan on doing it all by myself. I plan on sharing this journey here on KZfaq where I will show you every step of the way, all the struggles I run into and everything I will learn from this experience. I will then rent the cabin as a short term rental in hope of covering most, if not, all my house mortgage (House Hacking). Follow me here as this will absolutely be one of a kind journey.

Having framed for 35 yrs. it's easy to pick apart sub par work and (trust me) I do! I found your work above average and the nit picking isn't worth mentioning. What some call overkill is in your case - doing extra to insure a quality frame by a man who takes pride in his work. I hope you read this because rarely do I give out an ( attaboy) but you deserve it , good job and be safe!

I understand that this is sturdy but a 2x6 has an R-value of 6.88 and it looks like about 30% of that wall is wood. After windows and doors this is going to be like an R-12 wall unless you add 4” of foam. When we rebuilt our cabin, energy efficiency was one of our main goals. Not only is it more comfortable we don’t have to deal with all the “critters” we had before.

All of these "builders" and "Carpenters" and "framers" with negative comments forget one thing: Building Code represents the BARE MINIMUM standards to PASS an inspection, and that "appears" to be what they are accustomed to doing. If someone wants to build above and beyond the bare minimum, that should always be a plus if executed with proper skill. You Sir, have excelled, without a doubt. Great job!!

I'm a builder, and I like the work you have done here. Super craftsmanship all around. You have plenty of thickness for insulation. If you had gone with 2x4 walls and put 4 inches of rigid on the outside, you would then obviously have to adapt how you fasten your cladding, plus you'd have challenges if you wanted to fasten anything heavy to the outside walls. Now you can either clad the wall as is, or put a thin layer of rigid on the outside to help mitigate thermal bridging, if you choose to do so. To say that it's overkill doesn't really factor in the diverse advantages that you have gained or the problems you have overcome. Plus, it just feels great to have a rock solid structure!! 👍👍👍👍

As long as you were wearing a seatbelt, I think if that cabin tumbled down a hill, you’d definitely be fine. Then rent a crane and set it back on some piers and good to go. Idk where you’re building and that’d probably never happen, but man what an incredibly strong structure.
@TheDIYCabinGuy
@TheDIYCabinGuy Жыл бұрын
Paul, I’m in western NC which is considered a high wind zone per code, I’m also in a climate zone 5 region which actually governs the size of the framing for insulation purposes (2x6 walls, 2x10 floor joists, 2x12 rafters).

@@ShadyD365 I do! Still went though several county inspections, foundation, framing, plumbing, electrical, shower pan, hvac. I wanted to get everything permitted properly so that I would get a certificate of occupancy and also that the value of this cabin would be recognized and then increase significantly the value of my house next to it now that it will have this adu next to it.
@TheDIYCabinGuy
@TheDIYCabinGuy 5 ай бұрын
@@ShadyD365 if I want to do everything legally then yes. Let’s say I built this cabin with no inspection and didn’t get caught. Let’s say I ever wanted to sell my house with this non-permitted cabin behind it, people would ask about it, they’d pull the record and figure out it was never permitted, that would negatively affect the value of the my house and cabin. I mean, what’s the point of spending so much money for a cabin if it doesn’t increase my value property, that’d be a big waste in my opinion. Also, without a properly permitted structure, I surely wouldn’t be able to rent it on airbnb. I mean I could but if anything happened, I would be in much more trouble. Doing it without permit is fine I guess if you’re building an off grid cabin in the middle of nowhere which will be only for personal use. It comes down to your county/city rules, if I had built a much, much smaller cabin. I think I wouldn’t have needed a permit, like 100 SF and smaller.

If your cabin is in an earthquake zone, your structural strength is hard to beat. If a cold northern zone, any excess thermal bridging could be assessed, then retrofitted with insulation board at a later time, if needed. Great idea to extend the sheeting down for maximum rigidity. In regards to your "over built" walls, some could argue that a lot of squirrels love to chew that wood. When I was in junior high (late 1970"s), I saw a bumper sticker on a car that read: "Save a tree, eat a beaver". So, that being said, your walls are fine. Cheers!

I’m no builder, but I’ve read your comments about where you are and your wind zone and building codes, good for you, I wish I had half your commitment and skill with measuring and a functional back. it’s far better to over build something than under build it imho. The amount of insulation you will be able to put in will make your cabin so comfortable and you will need less heating and cooling. Besides a bushfire your place will survive anything. Ultimately, I don't want to dump on you because I also love to over-engineer stuff. Besides, it's your cabin and it's most definitely NOT going to fall down under ANY snow load. Your workmanship is also top notch! Having said that I do feel the need to point out that there comes a point where such a design is simply a pure waste of money, time, resources and will likely result in a building envelope that thermally under-preforms due to thermal bridging. Maybe this doesn't matter for the use case you have in mind, but I do feel that in this case a little less would have been more...

Thank you John! Mostly every framing (floor joist, wall studs, roof rafters) were upsized by insulation requirements. For instance, 2x12 rafters are not necessary from a structural standpoint but absolutely necessary to meet the R38 insulation requirement. Thank you for being considerate, a lot of people jump to conclusions without understanding the full picture.

That back wall to the woods needs a big bay window and i think the roof should be dropped below the façade, kind of like on a movie set so that the front face extends above the roof a bit. I also think the structural roof "Triangles" on the front & back walls, should have been built "in addition" to the lower body installing a "runner" or Sil point across the top of the wall structure.. I think Timbers have to be used as a minimum to be considered a Cabin, though this is pretty much the same thing and probably a bit easier to manage building. Not like I am out building Cabins, but that is just what i think.. 😁 Great Job, nonetheless.. I am not a fan of OSB(wet), I would prefer cedar planks to remove that exterior as a weak point.

Excellent video showing cabin construction. From the comments many people do not understand what is required to build a well-engineered structure! You need to start with an engineered foundation and a thorough understanding of the required framing the load path from top to bottom. You also need to take into consideration potential decay to prevent any future water infiltration. Energy conservation is a must. WELL DONE! Keep up the good work!

Only thing I saw that I might question, other than enough kickers and jacks to hold up a dump truck, lol, is why no bolts or screws in bottom plate to floor? Unless of course you're using ring shanks.

Yeah just nails typically, also keep in mind that sheathing in the outside does overlap past the bottom plate onto the beams

I hate it when builders talk about redundancy and at the same time their buildings are blown away by the wind .. There is no excess strength in construction, there is someone's desire to earn more or save

In general, I would replace all fasteners with high-strength stainless steel or titanium screws, and I would use boards from stabilized wood (impregnated with resin in a vacuum chamber) And be sure to sand them. I hate when something rusts or deteriorates.

There is difference between building the correct way and with strength and integrity. But my goodness a lot of this video is severe and unnecessary overkill. If that was the mission, then so be it. But carpentry principles would say this is silly.

Ha I watch a lot on KZfaq of how you build houses or sheds. Now I often see that the carpenters often nail three or more together. Why are you doing this, isn't it more convenient to use complete beams. This saves on sawing and nailing together. Greetings
