Check out our lineup of chin mounts for action cameras, custom fit to each model of helmet, perfect POV every ride! shop.wannabes....
We have this video up as a blog if you prefer reading: wannabes.life/....
In this video we show you exactly how to connect and run your GoPro Hero 8 or Hero 9 camera from an external battery for all day rides without ever changing the battery inside the camera.
We walk through which batteries to use, how big they'll need to be for the length of your typical ride, how to store all the footage you'll get (and how to easily edit it) and we'll show you some of the cool accessories we carry with us to keep our cameras rolling no matter what our adventures might throw at us.

Great vid. I had a similar set up for my 11 on my Himalayan trip. The only difference was I used a longer helmet lead of 30cm. This meant the connection hung off the back of the helmet making it easier to connect the two leads when putting my helmet on. I superglued a couple of small rubber pips in to each side of the usb connection to make it easier to line up the connection.

I’ve moved on now by creating a battery mounting plate from a GoPro bracket which clips to the back of the helmet. So much easier to have all day power plus it balances the weight of the camera

Mile Marker Mike: I had my gopro 7 (2 each) and go pro 8 for a couple of years. I've ridden on some 100 degree days and from time to time my gopro felt very hot. I put my gopro in the Ulanzi housing so my gopro external plug in goes into the convenient chamber below. Before I had the camera cycle off and the camera felt alittle hot. Ever since I removed the battery and went to an external source I no longer get overheat issue while recording in hot temperatures. Hence the battery removed removes the heat source from the go pro. One more plus removing the internal battery and going to an external source.

Hey, that's awesome to know. I had not thought about that. We run with the batteries in so that if the cord get's yanked, we don't lose footage. But this is a great idea for when heat is an issue.

You're running into issues with external power because all power banks have an auto-off feature when the load is low, i.e. when the Gopro disconnects from power accidentally. You can force the power bank to always stay on even when it is disconnected from what it is charging with a 'keep power bank alive' mod. This will allow quick capture to work all the time with external power because the GoPro will always be powered.

Nice video, lots of useful info. The cams don’t actually create continuous files longer than about 4Gb. GoPro calls it chaptering. Video files are broken into pieces every time the recording is stopped, or when a single file hits about 4Gb in size. They report that this by design and limits content loss in the event of a jolt, or similar, that stops recording. It does make manually backing up and editing footage back together more work. It’s easier to auto-backup directly to the cloud where it indexes them as continuous files that you can download to a workstation as one-piece. You mention one of the quirks when using a battery pack. I say one of them because there are others. I have the media mod in order to access the USB-C port and I run the cam at 4k/60 fps to capture my son’s travel baseball games. If I leave a battery in the cam when using an external battery, the cam will stop recording after a short time, or shut down completely. Initially, I thought it would be a good idea to leave a battery in the cam in case of a battery pack failure. It took a while to figure this out. It does not seem like you have the same issue, or an overheating issue like some do. You likely have decent airflow due to all of the movement and it looks like you use an anodized aluminum thumbscrew on the mount which acts like a heatsink.
@ExtremeSportsWannaBes

I don't mind the files being broken up, but I don't care for the naming convention they use. Regarding the camera freezing etc the battery in, it varies by model. I've found the hero 10 is actually the most stable on external power. The 9 is ok with the workaround I describe in the video. The 8 is hit or miss.

Recently started having issue with one card producing invalid files or file unavailable. Don't remember exactly what the message was but you get it I'm sure. So I decided to upgrade to Scan Disk 512 GB Extreme Pro in hopes of better performance from the SD card. I just did this upgrade so we will see in the very near future the results of this upgrade.

Great info. Thanks. I've got a H7 that I mostly use on top of helmet for adventure bike riding and enduro riding provided no low branches. I bought a Dango chin mount but, lost it once in an enduro and, it bumps on my neck brace or GPS on the bars. So, I'm considering buying a H11 Mini to put under helmet peak. Perhaps with external power too. Smaller camera under peak with higher POV but no bumping. Like your chin mounts. But, Dango issues aside, I don't want a specific mount for each of 4 different enduro or adv helmets. After 12 years of top, side and chin mounts, under peak next. (Chest POV too low)

Just picked up a second hand hero 7 black for our long group rides, I'm getting the X~PWR-H5 external power adapter so I can throw a battery bank into my crash bar bags and mount the gopro to my bike's crash bar for some nice side shots of scenery on the back roads. I'm also running a sena prism tube for the helmet shots but the battery doesn't last to long, most of my footage comes from my thinkware m1 motorcycle dash cam system but it doesn't look the greatest and the mic is absolute garbage. Thanks for the great video. Very informative. My GoPro 8 has been problematic out of the box, mostly due to the management of an external power supply that I have to use in order to capture a run in its entirety. Hey, the fact that you had to spend so much time in the video explaining the GoPro power quirks (and it was necessary) is maddening really! I can't believe GoPro haven't come up with a better, more reliable system. It's always a crap shoot as to whether or not I've captured any footage. Hey the GoPro takes some great footage but if it's not on, we'll then…

Thanks for that I've started using an 8 on my bike and I'm using a powerbank. If I upload to the gopro cloud it seems to split the big files up into smaller segments. But if I just transfer direct to a PC the files remain huge. Is that right,?
@ExtremeSportsWannaBes
@ExtremeSportsWannaBes 2 жыл бұрын
I have not used the cloud feature, but I expect the files are the same I'm both cases. GoPro breaks up files into about 4gig segments, basically a few mins each. This is to avoid a huge loss of data if the camera gets shutdown accidently I think (may also be a file structure limitation for backwards compatibility). I know that GoPro has a rather annoying naming convention for files too, which makes figuring out which clip came next in time a real pain while editing.

If they don't have a front screen, it's a little harder you tell. But so far as I know, all GoPros have an inductor light that tells you if it's recording. On the hero 10, there's a front screen that's easy to check in the mirror. That screen will go to sleep after a couple of minutes, but there is a red LED above the screen that blinks when the camera is recording. So you can easily check that in a mirror too.

We ride in California where it so very rarely rains it's not an issue. These set ups are not waterproof. Occasional light rain hasn't been an issue for us yet. There's a specific reason for the cable types we use for our riding. But, we suggest everyone tweak things to fit their personal needs, goals, and riding styles. For example, we run a very large battery pack so we can record two straight days of long riding. If you just want a couple hours, you could get away with a lot less.

Run it all day without turning it off. That's what we usually aim for. Also, ask if it's on, it's better than being wrong and missing footage.

I found that, if the internal battery is in, the external power supply will not charge the internal battery. It runs on the internal battery until the internal battery goes dead and then the unit power is off. Then it will start charging the internal battery from the external power supply. It doesn't look like you're having this problem. Is that correct? I tried it today without the internal battery and the media mod didn't work.
@ExtremeSportsWannaBes
@ExtremeSportsWannaBes 2 жыл бұрын
We use an internal battery as backup in case the cable comes unplugged. But in my experience, it'll both run the camera and slowly charge the battery (or at least prevent the battery running down). I've run the camera for 4 to 5 hours straight without turning it off.

@ExtremeSportsWannaBes

We've only ever had a GoPro overheat when we're sitting still (like shooting in the garage). For reference, we shoot at 4k. For the restarting issues, have you updated the firmware? In my experience, the hero 9 is the most troublesome. The 8 and 10 have been pretty stable.

My Hero 9 is facing rearward on my bicycle, behind my seat. So it doesn't get a breeze to help cool it. On some really hot days it has overheated after many hours when I'm pedalling slowly through the neighborhood to my house. It has their updated firmware, which helped. I use a black foam cover on it to reduce wind noise. No Media Mod. I'm thinking of making a light colored cover somehow. It would need to be breathable to avoid retaining the camera's heat. My front-facing Hero 10 doesn't overheat. Also no MediaMod or case on the Hero 10. Also powered by external battery (with internal battery installed).

Thanks for trying to help. My 9 seems to be a POS. It doesn’t do anything beyond its basic operation of recording short videos when using only the internal battery. I had been using as a webcam and to record some stuff using OBS. It just doesn’t do anything anymore. Maybe I own a dud. Maybe I’m an idiot. Oh well. It is not my destiny to make long distance bicycle videos.

@@david.vandergoesI've found that various electronic devices over the years that were acting particularly strangely or poorly suffered from poor power. Replacing a power supply or battery or USB power cable has sometimes fully cured what ailed it. Other times, even when battery contacts look clean and bright, the application of a miniscule amount of Caig DeoxIT has worked wonders. Odds are slim, but maybe a known good battery or DeoxIT, followed by a factory reset, could help your Hero 9. I prefer the Caig DeoxIT 25 ml red with needle applicator over the spray, so I can easily get it just where I want it. That's a lifetime supply.

We film in 4k. The GoPro does an annoying thing where it breaks files into approximately 10 min chunks. I believe they're around 3.5 gigs each. A long ride can produce like 100 gigs of footage.

Using the gopro is not the only thing needed to get excellent video for youtube. I use the movavi 2022 suite for editing. And I updated my computer to a gaming computer with the top of the line graphic card. Now my video is HD and I signed up for artlist for music. It took me a lot of trial and errors to get where I am right now. Plus if you didn't have the right settings on the gopro all is not lost. A good editor will help you fix some of video before going to print.

I've tried a few different lengths. At first we used short runs, 3 feet or less, to avoid it getting tangled. However, I'm currently using a longer cord so that it doesn't tighten up when I turn my head or move around. I tuck any extra into the backpack with the battery bank.

Hi, just bought a GoPro10. Works fine with external battery. Now, I bought a Media Mod and inserted my GoPro10. The battery drains though it was connected to an external source. Any idea how to fix this? I tried removing battery to get direct power from the source (which is possible without the media mod) but it did not work as well. Any idea? Will try to update firmware later. Btw, I had to reset and remove latest firmware due to overheating issue. Latest firmware causes the overheat. Kindly lost at the moment. Keeping my fingers cross if the firmware update will fix it.

That's a new problem that I have not heard about yet. I run the latest firmware, so perhaps that helps. We use batteries inside our GoPros and do use the media mod. Perhaps there is a problem with your mod. You can check if the camera is charging when you plug the USB cable into the mod. Look before you start recording.
