Little trivia - King Ghidorah is indeed dead at the end of Destroy All Monsters. Godzilla appeared to be running low on steam by 1968 and Toho had originally planned to end Godzilla's career with Destroy All Monsters hence the huge monster mash-up and using (and killing) King Ghidorah - his most challenging opponent at the time. What they didn't expect was that Destroy All Monsters revitalized the viewers' interest in Godzilla and lead to Toho creating some more films (All Monsters Attack / Godzilla's Revenge, Godzilla vs. Hedorah / The Smog Monster, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla / Cosmic Monster, and Terror of MechaGodzilla) hence why King Ghidorah was "still alive" in Godzilla vs. Gigan (all the aforementioned films are meant to take place in-universe *before* Destroy All Monsters), and then merely temporarily "retire" Godzilla to give the franchise time to cool off before his first revival / reboot with The Return of Godzilla / Godzilla 1985, and that's how it usually tries to go - give Godzilla a new reboot, a few movies for that new universe (usually with the first Gojira film being the only similarity), then retire again for a decade or so. In original time line, he was able to retreat 3x and came back to fight for another day. Heisei series only lasted 10 years even some of the popular monsters they brought back from 60s to 70s only lasted one film. Millenium series not going to last too long either so they thought to have King Ghidorah a good guy except the final war. What I like to see is Godzilla & King Ghidorah fight along side with each others. After all, Godzilla already had Rodan, Mothra, Anguirus, & Kumonga, etc. as his alliances that he also fought with before. With King Ghidorah would be unstoppable force.

Showa Ghidorah wasn't weak since Godzilla never defeated him 1 on 1. I don't blame him for fleeing in the endings of Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster or Invasion of Astro-Monster because he got outnumbered and overwhelmed in those movies.
