I forgot to look into the gylph tower puzzle and apparently the bit at 01:08:49 was the hint! Spoilers on what it entails You can find the full solve guide here - www.ign.com/wikis/tunic/Glyph_Tower_Puzzle TL;DR it leads to a scary ass website doyoufeartheeyesofthefarshore.co/ and the message "We are the eyes of the far shore" wtf 💀💀💀 maybe a sequel in the future...? Anyway, thanks for joining me on my TUNIC adventures!! Hope I'll see you in another playthrough down the line!

Just so you are aware, people think this might be some sort of ARG, or super puzzle in the game. There are also disscussions about a language hidden in the music, with the notes you hear (C,D,E,F,G,A,B) working as a readeable language somehow apparently
@amyreo1119

Yup! If you put the audio from the website through a spectrogram, there's a message that functions as a Rosetta stone, and makes translating specific sets of notes into words possible. For example, the noise the fairies make when you open a chest, some parts of the ost and so on, give little messages (often fluff but it could lead to something bigger!).

Hey Welonz, I know this series was very taxing especially towards the end but I truly loved watching you play this game. Your methodical nature really helped solve the puzzles and I greatly enjoyed the whole suite of software needed to solve some of them. I’m happy you kept playing past the first look, you definitely got farther than I ever would.

Maybe the heir cries when they see the manual because that was their manual when they were playing? Maybe all those notes were made by the heir?

i think the key to understanding the lore is that time in their planes of existence is not linear. The entombed foxes ARE the alluring power and also the future selves of all of them. Its just that the hero gets to see the full timeline by traveling physical space. The only thing linear is the cycle of heir and heir to the heir.
@svoco1265

I'd say it is not linear if it is a cycle. Also lore says that time got scrumbled after some event.

Yeah. The only thing I don't understand is at which point the foxes decided to let themselves be entombed. After the great war against those Disquieted Beings (squid-like creatures) I guess. But then did they also build the Ziggurat, when it was already there?

gua edit: I had to send a thanks as soon as I saw the final release! lol. Tunic is honestly my GoTY pick because of how it revitalized sharing knowledge and secrets with people. While the only real comparison would be Souls games, I find those games a bit too hard to enjoy and very dreary for my taste. The setting of Tunic just hit the right spots between having a bright world with secrets of a calamity that lead the world to ruin. Being a cute fox and having such a wonderfully constructed manual that just perfectly replicates a well loved game also makes me nostalgic for a time lost. You did amazing Welonz! There's times when I honestly did facepalm when you overthinked and doubted yourself on some puzzles but that's just part of the journey. Likewise, there's been puzzles that I've been stuck at (chimes, broken gold door, beach with the hook) that I couldn't figure out and seeing you get those in one shot was just inspiring for both what the game was hiding and how people managed to find it! I hope you had fun, and thank you for sharing this series!

The pink ash sits on a piece of cloth and the red string is, well, a string: It's an opened up satchel. You basically carry it around bundled up, and then presumably open it up when it's time to give it to the heir? Thanks for this very thorough playthrough. Was a lot of fun to watch!

A rambling of thoughts on what is in the manual that I think explains a bit more about the lore if pieced together. 22:44 "Fossils of self" 35:22 "Offer reverence for those who came before" 1:03:07 "Prove to those that who gave their power" This sounds like the fossilized foxes are one being offered reverence and the are probably the remains of those Heirs that came before after dying. 32:22 "The power to defy death" I think this is the power that the Heir uses to allow you to continue after dying, somehow gained by being within the Shadow Oubliette. 42:18 "Echo-of-self" 102:22 "Attune to a true memory" This passages makes me think that all who die are actually dead and that the "defying of death" is only a copy of the original fox. Any fox echo that is not claimed are returned to the Far Shore eventually becomes a lost echo. I think the foxes that you see populating the town were killed in a different way, probably similar to how the Heir kills you to end up in the night version of the town. 45:12 "The checkpoint says DEAD" 48:40 "No holy being will hear you (praying)" 56:24 "Cavity" 1:03:07 "Prove to those that who gave their power" The core/un-truth?/purple stuff somehow connects and powers everything. Through lost technology? I got nothing here. 23:49 "A terrible power rises" 59:55 "Lost friends" 100:51 "The chalice/vessel" The purified purple stuff (that doesn't sap hp) seems to be referred to as an elixir. It looks like it is somehow harvested from the fossil foxes, but drinking it seems to cause foxes to become like zombies. 46:19 "Maybe this is all a dream" I think this is just a reference to dreaming when sleeping, and sleeping returns things to how they were (day). There's still the strange Squid-like things in the trophy room portal and on page 4. I think they are somehow related to the lost technology and the war/final battle and maybe the terrible power. Who knows though. This is just me throwing out ideas based on the text.
@Solinaru
@Solinaru 2 жыл бұрын
For the DEAD checkpoints and their connection to the core/pillars, I believe this is related to "Offer reverence for those who came before" and "Prove to those that who gave their power". the translated text suggest that there was an ancient war in which the "fossil" foxes was fighting back against an unknown enemy. I'm assuming that those foxes found a way to defeat the enemies after they learned how to sacrifice themselves to empower the surviving foxes in battle. This leads to the "A terrible power rises" as a future generation of foxes harness the fossils for everlasting life in a ritual (that includes the purple goop/blood?) instead of letting the fossils sleep. In turn they're cursed to always defy death by being a weapon of death.
@rocketlanterns
@rocketlanterns 2 жыл бұрын
@@Solinaru Alternatively the foxes entombed themselves to protect themselves from that war. The unknown enemy is most likely the Disquiet Beings from the Far Shore as shown on page 4.

28:37 I mean, you don't *have* to do all that of course, it's totally an option to defeat the Heir the first time you fight them thus beating the game without ever becoming a ghost or doing the cathedral. Speedruns obviously do this, they stunlock the Heir using ice projectiles (dagger + wand). I've also seen a video of someone defeating the Heir on the "first time" (of that run) with sword only (no spells or bombs) without taking any damage... they were just really, really good at dodging and parrying.

Ending B was permanent before, so if you had all pages before returning, the game would boot you into an NG+ without Ending A. A patch fixed this. If you return with incomplete manual, then Heir is ready to attack you and if you return with a full one, then you get a choice.

Thanks for finishing that game. It was nice to see how you have been solving these endgame puzzles 21:00 This page is on the language you have chosen in settings. However, the text about the feather is written in fox language, which is always phonetic English, no matter which language you play I agree that English is a bit difficult in matters of relating what you hear and speak and what you write and read. Sometimes you just need to know, and no way you can pronounce something correctly or write the word you hear. There are languages where letters always (or almost always) match. I think these languages would work nice with that fox script. You just need to adapt it to each language. The Heir really looks a bit different than other foxes. Maybe because of elongated limbs, like purple foxes? The story of Tunic is difficult even with book. I think there were ancient foxes with advanced technologies, despite their more religious way of life. They knew how to use the far shore for their benefit. At some point they tried to delve even deeper. I think they started to encase these fox souls into these pillars and somehow it allowed them to reach immortality. I'm not sure what the first Heir did. But it seems they are responsible for people venerating these deshaped foxes. It seems that at some point reality became too unstable, so these far shore beings began to ravage canonical plane The only thing I don't understand is the Heir. What's the cause behind that cycle? It was said that the Heir weakens over time, so Ruin Seeker becomes a new one, if proves worthy. Or RS may break the cycle, using complete manual
@Solinaru
@Solinaru 2 жыл бұрын
I know this is some head-cannon stuff, but I believe the following: - Being the Heir is a right of passage to be both the protector and destroyer of the world. If the cutscene played on for longer, I bet our tunic fox would take the same metaphysical form as the previous Heir. (Especially when they take up the sword.) - I believe that the power to defy death exist as the fossil foxes in the tombs. We see these foxes existing in the canonical world inside the ziggurat as they await to become pillars, but the thing is that (based on the reaction of one of those fossils as they get encased) this wasn't what they were expecting. The Scavengers mostly don't know what they're taking apart besides the Boss who's learned too much and might of wanted to take the red questagon for herself. - It's possible that the creation of the Cathedral was to create the power to defy death without being trapped. The followers of that church didn't realize that defying death has a cost and death will always get it's due. If I had to take a guess, the First Heir might of been the head of the church who was then trapped in the space between. Each RS that comes to this island (because it feels like a calling) who manages to break the Heir out of their prison then becomes the next Heir to trap the power of the previous one and so on. The seeking of power leads each fox to do things that puts the world in danger to the point that they're the source of danger for the next generation.

also, I imagine the Heir and the tunic fox to be a parent and child. It makes the good ending even more enjoyable as mama fox gets to see their young kit having fun and catching up with everything she's missed over the years.

You said in one of your Q&As that you do not enjoy games where you have to cut a lot, so I guess souls-likes would usually not be the thing you would go for on this channel, but let me just say that I would LOVE watching you play other souls-like like Elden Ring. for anyone who feel like challenging themselves to learn the language, but wants some structure of how to start reading without external resources: the 2nd last page with big bro's pen markings of language features is important. consider a full conncected glyph pattern to be a single word, joined by a line across the centre. words are made up of sylables, which are in-turn made up of a constonant part and a vowel part. the constanent part is like a stick figure, and the vowel part is like a capital C encircling the stickman. which specific constenant sound and vowel sound is represented by missing portions of the C and stick figure. After leafing through big-bro's pen notes on language I would start by looking at words made of a single glyph, likely to be THE, AND, AT, IN, and so on. seperate by constanent and vowel, then use those parts of language to pick apart the larger words that are made of multiple glyphs smushed together. Remember, be kind and share your wisdom.

I tried some translating myself before i got tired of it, and it's not that hard once you find the final note page and realize you have to use the phonetic alphabet, not the normal one. Start with the hints on the page itself, then North/east/south/west and "the golden path", and proceed from there to text that you're pretty sure about its translation of, or larger chunks of text and try to guess the missing words! Its quite fun if you love decoding stuff!

Welonz continues being GOAT LPer going above and beyond many would go to search for the secrets of an interesting game. And great show of skill against The Heir, and I knew your reaction will be similar to mine for Ending B. This is what's been theorised from what's been given to us in the game, and the Glyph Tower puzzle. Foxes understood that other planes/dimensions existed even knowing of the Holy Cross (which if it hasn't clicked yet, is your d-pad, or arrow keys, but probably former). Time probably may have no meaning in The Far Shore, and when Foxes started going there they found what the fanon calls Disquiet Beings (Eyes of The Far Shore Message). They may have traded with them for a time, but on more exploration they found Entombed future versions of themselves in the Ziggurat. This may have seemed to them like The Power to Defy Death, as they seemed to be still alive! They also gave off their core, what is also called Local Truth, the purple liquid, that gives Ruin Seeker hopelessness. The Hero who opened the Tombs/Monolith thought this was a powerful but terrible truth and built The Cathedral to venerate it, drinking the purple stuff like an Elixir and also giving it to their followers, though may be not all Foxes may have followed them. Now the following bit is a bit fuzzy, but a War started between the Disquiet Beings and Foxes led by The Hero (Pg 4 lower image, Siege Engine vs Disquiet Beings), and all matter of strange maybe physics breaking things start happening to Canonical Plane, which causes the Foxes to Entomb themselves in the Ziggurat, which is later on discovered by Foxes who have just started exploring The Far Shore. Predestination. A Power to Defy Death but at the cost of not being able to return to the bigger world. Outside of this loop, this Shivering Ring (no idea why this wording is used), The Hero was imprisoned (maybe as a Truce?) and dubbed The Heir, for their role in Fox society, and Ruin Seekers are drawn to it, to either replace The Heir or Save them. Some, including me, believe that The Heir may be a future version of Ruin Seeker, because of the double meaning name and us taking our rightful place to stop a future version to wage war against Disquiet Beings, which we don't do in Ending B, so don't know what consequences of that would be. The game warns when making an offering to the Heir probably because they themselves might get stronger from getting those gifts, and since they are already at full power when imprisoned, just like you are when you become golden, they may get stronger, Far Shore not stripping their power. If you watch the Heir's dying animation closely you can see their Soul leaving their body like the trapped souls that we free do. The Sword on the Title Screen is the Real Hero's Sword, which is what The Heir fights with, you only have a forgery as is mentioned in the Manual. How they got it is a mystery in itself, maybe Ending B leads to the War happening which allows them to become Hero again. Also, The Manual may have previously belonged to The Heir and they are ones who scribbled on it (they cry on seeing it), some also believe the Pg 9 Save file is theirs, though I don't think their is any clue for that. If all the areas are mapped out side by side then I believe The Hidden Vault would be just beneath The Dark Tomb, thus answering your question of who is enshrined there (this may not be true). I don't think this is Ruin Seeker's homeland, just the place they were drawn to because of the Beacon that is the Heir's prison, which is why different language. And finally, I'm on the fence for this detail but when you are "killed" by The Heir, it may have sent you to War Torn version of this land, instead of just making it night time. Thanks for not giving up on this game Welonz, this was a wonderful journey! and definitely the best playthrough of the game by far on YT. Edit - The Bone is a hidden card in Ruined Atoll, I believe. Many believe that it was cut from the story manual tells as Hero's laurels pretty much make Bone useless. edit - Kinda sad this didn't make it to Welonz's favourites playlist. Though as long as Outer Wilds is there I'll be happy.

I have greatly enjoyed this playthrough--and very much including the translations and discussion thereof in this video! Thank you Welonz for taking us on this journey! ^_^ And indeed, the translations and discussion proved fascinating! I am distinctly impressed by what the devs made here! ^_^ Regarding the plot, I have some thoughts--I'll put them into a reply to this, in case they prove spoilery...
@ianeborn6823
@ianeborn6823 2 жыл бұрын
As to the plot, these are my thoughts: First, I get a distinct impression that the setting of the world is intended to be, from an in-universe perspective, fictional--or perhaps rather "narrative"--in nature. Note that the manual talks about the main part of the setting being the "canonical" plane--i.e. the plane of what is accepted to be true, or the plane of what is an accepted part of the story. Note too that there seems to be a connection between the game and the manual--an ostensibly out-of-universe document--in that one gains manual pages in the game and finds in-game solutions in the manual. And note finally that the calamity that befell apparently involves "a hole in truth" and the intrusion of "disquiet contradictions"--plot holes, by my interpretation. And relatedly, I'm pretty confident that the "Holy Cross" of the game is... the player's out-of-game D-Pad (or arrow-keys). The patterns themselves don't seem to make up anything "cross"-shaped, and nor does any traditional cross show up in-game--the closest is the thing to which the energy-fox is crucified in the Cathedral, but that doesn't seem to be related to the patterns. The term "oubliette", by the way, comes I believe from a term related to "forgetting"--it was, I think, a sort of prison in which one might dump a prisoner and forget about them. Thus I suspect that the intention of the foxes who imprisoned the Heir was that the Heir would be left behind entirely by them.

Man, you put so much work into this and I love the amount of secrets you've found along the way. Screengrabs were the MVP. What a cool little game. Just out of curiosity if you ever had room to play something in the future that's short (4ish hrs), there's a game called Industria. It's an FPS heavily inspired by Half-Life 2 concerning a scientist trying to find her colleague in an alt Berlin filled with robots. A lot of Control vibes from what I've seen and it looks right up your alley if you'[re interested. It just dropped on consoles, too.

Only one other game I've seen has forced the lets player to use external programs as extensively as Tunic. It's a small Indie game called "LOCK" by the developer 800pixelgorilla within the PS4 game creation tool/metagame called "Dreams." Beyond all expectations, this game-made-in-a-game is a pure puzzle game with deep mechanics and a brilliantly simple concept. The game is full of 4-letter keypads you must unlock with codes you get from solving the other puzzles in the game. That's it. That's the premise, and the creativity of the author on how far they took that premise is breathtaking. Each keypad unlocks new places or new puzzles to solve to then open further keypad locks. If you're looking for a pure puzzle game with a wide array of puzzles, that's one to look into if you have the PS4. The only lets play I've seen of the game took about 7 hours to beat including commentary (twelve 25-40 min episodes).

I completed this game yesterday, save for finding all twelve artifacts. It was an amazing experience, and I was pretty happy to see more people get this far, especially you, whose experiences are all on video. You even managed to beat the Heir, which took a bit too much effort for me (I just ended up searching for the other secrets, which led to the good ending). Really happy to see more people enjoy this awesome game.

05:48 Seems like the Heir regrets it 18:10 (insert "Kermit hugging the screen" image) 26:52 "Immigrant fox" =) 34:15 Popular peeve The game turned out to be a pleasant surprise in more than one way. The only complaint that arose from watching it is related to combined and limited weapon/consumable slots, which adds a bit of extra inventory management. The two language-based puzzles are difficult for sure, especially for non-English speakers, but they affect neither ending, and even the game explicitly says only half of fairies and trophies have to be collected. Overall, the game seems to be really well done, and complete in both gameplay and audiovisual part (not to mention the cute protagonist) - there's nothing that feels lacking or made in a haste. Worthy of "Made by gamers and for gamers" seal of approval. Welonz, thanks for the journey: this LP can easily qualify as the most invested into in terms of attention to details and off-game info digging. And once again, I can't help but notice your daring approach to combat: evading, risking, pressing - you seem qualified to visit a certain niche of games.

I think you could easily look at the "we're raising a copy of ourselves who will eventually take our place" simply as education, and family, and even just one person at different stages of their life. And the fact that it appears to be an endless cycle... well it kinda is. And everyone has to go through it, cause immortality is neither possible nor a blessing. We have to be taught, we have to teach, we have to hand it over one day. I think it's also about how older people influence and educate younger people without even being aware of it - the older sibling writing notes in the game booklet, looked up to by a younger sibling and not realising their own value. It puts me a little in mind of Chicory: A Colorful Tale. I wish I hadn't bought Death's Door and bounced off it, cause Tunic looked so similar, and I was not going to waste my money on another tough game that I can intellectually appreciate but fully never commit to beating. Not that I reckon I'd have gotten this far in Tunic without a lot of help, but ugh I wish I'd given the money to the game with the accessibility settings. I'm so pleased you showed it off to this extent, it was a great piece of work and you really did it justice

It is one thing to use external programs to solve puzzles but one game called Filament hides dozens of secrets behind all kinds of "external knowledge"... Knowledge such as Morse code, binary code, a substitution cipher and even one that requires you to interpret the colour bands of a resistor!

wow what a ride! when you first looked at the soul location page and said you're not going to get all of them, i genuinely believed that because they seemed so tough and time consuming. i would have never gotten the wind chime one and you must have ascended into astral plane when solving that one lol i did find the ending a bit underwhelming compared to the effort you put in completing everything but i suppose the beauty in it is coming to your own conclusions and not spelling everything out. i feel like his is one of those games where people are still going to find more secrets years later... anyway thanks for finishing the series :)

There's a demo out for a game called Foretales. It's basically a "Disney's Robin Hood, but you can rob -and kill- animal people" story-based card game. It's really, really cool, and I think you would get a huge kick out of it. The demo's on Steam, for free. And it's pretty long, too. A great demo for the money you don't spend on it.
