FANNY
Fanny was an American rock band, active in the early to mid 1970s. They were one of the first all-female rock groups to achieve critical and commercial success, including two Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles.
The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. After playing through several variations of the band, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group, leading to the original line-up splitting. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. The Millington sisters have continued to play music together since the split, and with a former drummer, Brie Howard Darling, formed the spin-off group Fanny Walked the Earth in 2018.
The group has continued to attract critical acclaim for rejecting typical girl group styles and expectations of women in the rock industry generally, and emphasizing their musical skills. Later groups such as the Go-Go's, the Bangles and the Runaways cited Fanny as a key influence.
THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL
The Midnight Special is an American late-night musical variety series originally broadcast on NBC during the 1970s and early 1980s, created and produced by Burt Sugarman. It premiered as a special on August 19, 1972, then began its run as a regular series on February 2, 1973; its last episode was on May 1, 1981.[2] The 90-minute program followed the Friday night edition of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
Like its syndicated late-night cousin Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, the show typically featured guest hosts, except for a period from July 1975 through March 1976 when singer Helen Reddy served as the regular host. Wolfman Jack served as the announcer and frequent guest host. The program's theme song, a traditional folk song called "Midnight Special", was performed by Johnny Rivers.
The Midnight Special was noted for featuring musical acts performing live, which was unusual since most television appearances during the era showed performers lip-synching to prerecorded music. The series also occasionally aired vintage footage of older acts, such as Bill Haley & His Comets. The program also featured occasional performances of comedians such as Richard Pryor, Andy Kaufman, and George Carlin.

@@FenceThis Hello Fence This…The very fact that Fanny was an all-female band, playing their own instruments on stage 50 years ago, made them ahead of their time! Back then, MALE rockers dominated the scene almost entirely. How do I know? I lived it, working as a radio DJ back then. As a woman, I saw it and experienced it myself. So YES…Fanny were ahead of their time in the male dominated musical culture of the late 60’s & early to mid 70’s…Take it from a woman who lived it: ME! Thank You! 👍👍👍👍

@@joannebeauchamp1169 I was there, they weren’t ahead of their time - they were right in their time, they were time typical. A lotta female bands existed then, in the US and elsewhere most of whom didn’t get much attention though. For a band to be ahead of their time, gender role stereotypes aside, you’d expect something musically groundbreaking which all their qualities regardless wasn’t exactly the case with Fanny.

@@FenceThis Good hearing from you. I think there may be a bit of a misunderstanding on this term…You are saying MUSICALLY Fanny was “of their time.” Yes, they fit right in musically back then. My point is, in a historical, sociological context, they certainly were groundbreaking…Simply by being WOMEN playing their own instruments in a MAN’s world back then, yes, they were ahead of their time. Very, very few other women were doing such a thing back then…Hope this clears things up. Musically, Fanny was, “of their time.” Sociologically, “Ahead of their time.” 😸😸😸😸

@@joannebeauchamp1169 well, I believe really many were playing, both there and in (particulacy northern) Europe, but that for the most part it went by without much notice from neither press nor public. A band like Fanny in that perspective were an exception even then as still more of these excerpts from TV and concerts in Europe reoccur to document it. I recall actually watching some of these broadcasts back then as a pre teen but there were nowhere go searching for further info in either magazines or anything. BBC program OGWT with host ‘whispering’ Bob Harris was one of the sources to draw from to broaden the horizon as well as French, German, Dutch and Scandinavian TV. There was a politically active movement among women in these countries rising from the counter culture to take possession of their own lives, including making music on their own terms.

Fanny was a rarity in their heyday: An all-female group that didn't merely sing, although all four members could do so, and far from a novelty, in spite of the way some people who booked them saw them. They were the real deal and it's a shame they were forgotten over the years. I hope someday when the next serious retrospective of women bands is made it doesn't start with the Go-Gos and the Bangles. It starts here.

I remember seeing them on kids' TV shows. It was as if they were being presented as some kind of novelty act or bubble gum group. I think that the record company did not know exactly how to promote them, and audiences weren't quite ready for them. Sometimes trailblazers have the hardest road. But there is no question that they played some kicking rock and roll.

@RogerWilco99 Before there was Heart, before there was The Go Gos, before there was Vixen, before there was The Donnas, there was FANNY. You are absolutely right. They were victims of a male-dominated music business. To make it as a woman in music then, you had to be "f---able". That was a crying shame, and very tragic. When Fanny was given the chance, they killed it. It is very tragic they were not taken seriously because of their gender. Helen Reddy did not write, and sing "I AM WOMAN" for nothing.

Yeah, sounds like a tuned jet engine, doesn't it? A roadie with a Southern rock band named Blue John gave me a hint: remove the original speaker and drop in a 30 watt Celestion. A Leslie amp tops out at 100 watts, so: pedal to the metal and the damned thing sounds like a B-52 roaring down the runway. They can get pretty close to that sound these days with digital patches--I have four or five in my E-Mu Proteus6 that sound pretty good--but live, there ain't nothing like the sound of a Hammond B3 and a real Leslie. I had an M102 and a 147 Leslie that sounded pretty sweet but I was never able to get that growl out of it. Like Chasbo Daniels says, "Weighs a ton, but worth it if you can afford roadies."

Jean Millington is among my all-time fave bass players. I class her right up there with Suzi Quatro. In fact, their styles are pretty similar. They both favor Fender Precisions, they both have that growly, funky groove that never stops, they both sing REALLY well, and they're both really easy on the eyes. There's a clip of Fanny on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert with Patti Quatro on guitar, after June left the band to do some solo work, somewhere out there in cyberspace. It's from about '74, somewhere in that era. I've been looking for it without much success. It's a MONSTER clip with Jean improvising a really killer bass solo. I'd just come in from a gig myself and caught the last few minutes of it at my gf's place. Jean was wearing sparkly black velvet and the closeups of her hands were amazing; those long skinny fingers of hers were just blurs all over the neck. If someone can locate that clip, I'd be eternally grateful. I LOVED Fanny! Such a terribly underrated group of seriously talented women! They didn't get beans for support from Reprise Records. They were the first all-female rock band to sign with a major US label and if their A&R team had possessed half a brain, they would have promoted them much more. Even David Bowie loved them! He said, "[They're] extraordinary... they're as important as anybody else who's ever been, ever; it just wasn't their time." If not for these ladies and the other trail blazers like Suzi Quatro and the Runaways, the presence of women in rock would have been far less. Girl power onstage is an awesome force to behold. We can thank these ladies for showing us the way.

Their only hit, "Charity Ball", was played in heavy rotation in the Philly area on the old WFIL and WIBG back in 1971. Still own the 45. They should have been superstars.

What a great video of this terrific band. I wish it was an entire show! Fanny should have been as well-known as any of the other male rock bands of the time. They were hugely talented. For those with an interest, there were actually many other all-female bands during the 60s and 70s, such as Birtha, The Hairem (also known as She), The Pleasure Seekers/Cradle (Suzi Quatro's band), The Sandoval Sisters (also known the The Girls), Goldie and the Gingerbreads, The Luv'd Ones (lead guitarist/singer Char Vinnedge later recorded an LP with Jimi Hendrix bass player Billy Cox), the Liverbirds....I could go on and on!

honestly, it’s such a shame they could never catch the same sound on the studio because the producers didn’t think women could make blues rock and they wrote their music too!

‘76 HS grad…I DON’T KNOW HOW I MISSED THIS GROUP, FANNY! And just like all my friends & classmates, I was seriously into music, buying vinyls, etc. I have to believe that i maybe saw them on TV, or heard them on the radio. As a young impressionable girl, would have loved to have listened to this groundbreaking group! Recorded and watched the PBS documentary on the group this a.m. Just blown away! And they did have a level of acclaim, but they just didn’t go where they should have. Well rounded talent! Todays groups just don’t compare with respect to being musicians as well as vocalists, and damn good musicians at that! So glad I stumbled upon them and will be sharing their story & music with others for sure! Kudos ladies 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️…it is truly ashamed, but better late than never!

Another '76 HS grad here! When I was young I soaked up as much music as I could but, like you, I'd never heard of Fanny back then, either - but wish I had! I watched that PBS documentary, too, and I got the impression that they really weren't promoted properly (maybe because they were "girls" and might have been considered a novelty act by the record companies), but they certainly deserved a whole lot more recognition than they did. Yes, "better late than never"!! I'm now a big fan!

Saw this when I was 16 in 73’, should have bought their records back then, they are great live performers , incredible musicians, hey I’d Bowie knew it, we all should have known it, listening to the music now on Apple Music, I think the record company tried to polish them up too much because they were women , they could flat out rock playing live Fanny 4ever 👍🏻⚡️⚡️⚡️

I've seen a recent gig with all of them in Sacramento, Nickey Barcley though is very hard to find... I only found an interview (in text) with her, in which she says Nickey Barcley is not her real name, that she retired from business in the 1980s and that she doesn't want to be found lol. Such a strong personality it seems. It would be great to see her around again though. I hope she shows up one day again!
