In this, episode 40, of PowerTec 10, DV goes into detail on the AFR low buck 165 cc port Renagade heads for the Windsor range of Ford engines. There are times when a product can achieve a large following of enthusiasts that latch on to whatever it is, and then, tell everyone they can, how great it is. Ford's 303 series of cams falls into this group. This range of cams is widly claimed as the best thing since sliced bread when in reality they are little better than mediocre. The AFR heads have been widley accliamed for functionality but is it mythe or reality. Watch and find out!

Do you think they would be worth the extra price compared to the Promaxx 180 heads? I’m in the process of upgrading the 351w in my 90 F250. I’ve already upgraded to a Terminator x for engine management on the stock fi system. Im not looking for huge power but good low and midrange torque which i think these heads would work perfect. Im looking to convert to a Lunati efi roller cam. 272/280 adv dur with .477/.477 lift and 112/108 lsa/icl

Nice to see a product that lives up to expectations. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos. I have some questions on porting. When we build an engine, with care, we do our utmost to get the piston and rod weights equal and we CC the chambers to get them equal etc. When porting what is our goal? Do we want to get the highest flow numbers from each individual port or should we try to equalize them as much as possible? When we put a manifold on then we will have unequal runner lengths. Would it be beneficial to have more flow, as measured on the flow bench, to the front and rear cylinders to compensate for the different runner lengths?

The rough surface has the effect of shark skin. A bad heart attack wiped out a lot of my memory, but it it has to do something with the laminar air flow. They experimented with airplane wing surfaces and found there was less wind restriction but the manufacturing process was complex. My question is that since we know a lot more now than 20 years ago, why aren't manufacturers just manufacturing heads with all these features?? It wouldn't cost any more during the manufacture to include these features.

Great information and love watching your videos. I am hooked. Always followed you in the 80's with cylinder head porting on mini's . @ 18:26 you said thick line was AFR 165 and thin was your E7TE which should of been the other way round. As previous plot was just showing AFR 165 at flow 202 for the exhaust.

According to Darin Morgan golf ball dimples are far to regular to do any good. He makes his ports very rough with the help of a burr with bent stem. He said that the heads look so ugly when hes done so he probably couldnt sell them. But it makes power on the race track. The runners should have this shape from a few inches above the injectors and down into the heads. Im sure there are a few particulars concerning the exact way he does it.

The stories are a bonus! That's in reference to you saying thank you for putting up with my stories all of them. The the stories add educational, information, and entertainment value. They provide us a glimpse in the past. What can I say about your videos overall? Wow, excellent, wow. I think that pretty much sums it up I can throw some other adjectives in there. My dad race Flathead 8s way back in his day. He would tweak at 2:35 or 292 inline 6 occasionally. But what I grew up on was thrifty. . No complaints I kind of miss those days. I've messed with non-thrifty engines as my dad would have called them. His philosophy was there's no use being in a hurry to get there because you may not get there at all. I pass on that same thing. Discourage what seems to be in our blood for racing. Anyway that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the videos about the type of engines that you build. I just get to be the kid looking in the window of the homemade candy shop with 20 bucks in my pocket enough to get me 50 cavities. But my mom says you can't go in there. I hope you like that metaphor story. Although I've been itching to build something for the quarter mile again. Have you ever noticed a lot of people especially kids they don't listen to what you say they watch what you do. Hence the reason discouraging the racing. Bunch of videos man they are excellent Uncle Tony's garage channel fantastic thing he's done turning us on to you. And this Andy guy I got to go back in your videos and find out his channel. What you said about 330 cubes makes sense. The 327 has always been my favorite engine. Thanks again. I'm on the road quite a bit so I'm saving up your videos for when the snow and ice hits the ground

Looking at their web site it's interesting that the 165 and 185 are CARB legal, even though they won't work with stock pistons. I'm surprised that it's possible to get CARB approval while requiring a swap of other parts.

@jeffrykopis5468 Жыл бұрын
They will work with stock pistons, if using the STOCK cam, I believe. But AFR knows you won't, lol. The 185s may be better suited for the 351W in mild street applications.

It may also be possible to lightly flycut the stock pistons, right in the bore, for valve clearance.
@deanstevenson6527
@deanstevenson6527 Жыл бұрын
Daniel, it doesn't require new pistons. Just PTV ( piston to valve) Clearance. Sometimes, not even the pistons need clearancing. CARB is a generic compliance for a specific family and year to get an EO#. Ford removed EGR on some SUV 5.0 and Australian market 5.0s. A lot of heads are exported, and the TUV , EU andADRs in those countries require a valid CARB code .

@@deanstevenson6527 Their web site states: AFR's 185cc "Street" cylinder heads feature 100% CNC ported intake, exhaust & chambers, A356 aluminum castings and high quality components throughout. Recommended for engines from 302-393 cubic inches, operating up to 6000-6500 RPM. Part #1422 & 1492 are street legal in 50 states for 1995 and older emissions controlled vehicles under CARB EO #D-250-3. Not compatible with OEM pistons. AFR heads are available bare (without parts), call our tech line for details. maybe it isn't accurate. I would have expected CARB approval to be for a certain configuration, meaning a certain set of pistons, but I've never dealt with it. I know it isn't cheap.

Great data! "Before you can manage it you first have to measure it." This has been my motto for decades. Or at least one of them. Another is "There is no replacement for displacement." What irritates me, and maybe I am just being a bit of a jerk, but people use the term Ft/Lb of torque for linear force. Linear force is Lb-F - Pounds Force. Ft/Lb is rotational torque. Pounds force per foot from center of the radius. For smaller measurements, there is inch pounds and inch ounces.

The dimples on a golf ball are what allows you to control the balls flight and keep it in the air. That being if you’re capable of doing it of course😂. Without dimples the ball will fly like the ultimate knuckle ball. Many people might be better off with the knuckleball maybe keep it in play instead of slicing the ball to the next county..

I note, gleefully, that you, a world respected and accomplished engineer, freely refer to an engine as a "motor". What do you say to those stuffy, pedantic, SELF STYLED "engineers", that huffily insist that "MOTOR only applies to electric..." blah blah blah? I always say, "Motorcycle, motorhome, motorboat, motor oil, motor racing, and Dept of Motor Vehicles. Shut up." 🤣
@Thumper68
@Thumper68 Жыл бұрын
Motors are electric. Engines are internal combustion. What you’re saying makes you right is just peoples ignorance of the word motor. Motor is a word originally from the year 1586. Causing or imparting motion or moving at a vigorous pace. So replace motor with movement or moving and pretty much every time it will work which is funny because the people who invented those things could of called them anything but along with it sound right it’s also because of the words history long long before we had the automobile which is maybe why they used motor in place of mobile because cyclemobile and mobilecycle doesn’t sound right like a bicycle that imparts motion on its own…ah yes a Motorcycle.

@@Thumper68 Hiya Thump. We've chatted before. You're the Pontiac guy and ethanol maker. Thanx for the info. You are technically correct, but as a former writer and English major, I say it's a fight you'll never win. The public at large decided 100+ years ago that "motor" was acceptable for an engine (but an electric motor should never be called an engine), and when enough people use a word a certain way long enough, it becomes de rigeur.

It would be a good point to use from my side of a debate though and I never used before so thank you I believe I will next time and save all the other ammo. From what I read polishing intake ports on the street kills mpg. In drag racing the motor isn't sitting idle for very long. The video showed that with the polished intake ports were "wet" and was diminishing atomization. In racing applications this doesn't occur.
