Why heavily criticize the unit because of lack of touchscreen? The unit is being marketed to be use with your phone and StreamMagic as your remote. Plus, who wants to get up every time just to change the song/volume from the unit? No one… You seat, close your eyes and enjoy the music… that’s the whole point of it.

Device review priorities 1- Does it have HDMI ARC? 2- Does it have a touch screen? Well, let's continue to check the rest... Zooming in on a feature that is not necessary compared to the strengths of this device and is very tasteful.IMO

Well said. It's pointless and just a waste of money. Even the screen is pointless and so are the buttons. That's why the WiiM Amplifier is going to kill off this high end stuff.

Good morning! First, THANK YOU so much for tuning in to this review! I'm loving all of the back and forth. It would seem the EVO 150 (and 75) is a hot product right now and has sparked a lot of interest within the community and that is a GREAT THING! I wanted to write a group comment if you will to address a topic that seems to have divided the class -touchscreens. Many of you agree with me re: the EVO needing a touchscreen, and many of you do not. I can see and even appreciate both points of view and while many of you felt I may have made too big a deal out of touchscreens in this review, I'm afraid a little more discussion is needed. So here goes! To those who say touchscreens are unnecessary, and even "stupid" I get it. Your arguments against touchscreens are valid and in many respects I even agree with you, especially as it relates to App-based control. That said, here's why I believe a touchscreen is necessary on the EVO or any future hifi product. First, just because you may not see the need, the fact remains that among the younger generation touch-control has become the norm. Whether or not users choose to use touchscreens over the App is irrelevant for younger users expect and frankly demand to have that flexibility. Any argument against a touchscreen is somewhat akin to saying "Cambridge shouldn't include TIDAL support because more people use or prefer Spotify". That may make sense if you're a Spotify user, but quickly becomes a head scratcher if you're a TIDAL user like me. Second, if no one interacts with the physical unit itself, preferring instead to use the App or remote, why give it a screen, buttons or even any sort of physical controls at all? A lot of you have commented that you like the EVO's volume and input dial, two things that require you to TOUCH the unit itself. I'm sorry, but it is my opinion that if we're going to applaud a volume/control dial then we're discussing a device that is going to be touched and thus physical control of the unit is important. And if it's important I say, give it a touchscreen. Third, we often complain about the lack of physicality that permeates today's digital music culture. Interacting with a device such as the EVO and allowing for the virtual thumbing through of albums etc, brings some (emphasis on some) of that back -albeit in a different way. Lastly, and if for no other reason, the presence of a touchscreen would have been a BIG way for the EVO to differentiate itself from the crowd or at least some of the crowd. Is it necessary? No, of course it's not, but it wouldn't have hurt it either. I hope this helps clarify my thoughts and larger points that I (attempted) made in this video. I'm not leaving this comment in an attempt to convince you or bring you over to my side of the argument, I just wanted to clear up a few things. Thanks for taking time to read and to watch this video. We appreciate it! Be well everyone! -Andrew

You put across some good but invalid points. These units are all about their sound and so if the only reason to buy one is because it has a touch screen then you might as well get out of the audio game all together. These units should always be designed simply and without unnecessary, pointless and expensive signal paths and to a degree I believe the screen should be removed completely.
@russfelger
@russfelger 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if this unit has this ability, but, and seeing how the screen is small, and there's usually a larger one close; wouldn't a way to send the screen info to a tv be a great idea or feature? Showing the info on a larger screen, would be a nice touch. Blu ray streamers have the ability, so it wouldn't be a huge feat to implement. Thoughts....?

I've had an Atom for a couple of years and I just auditioned the EVO 150. For me the EVO sounds a bit more coherent and a little smoother than the Naim with a more convincing soundstage. I do find the Naim can be a bit fatiguing over a long listening session and while every individual instrument is ultra-clear they don't always knit together into a musical whole. Personally I couldn't care less about a touch screen as it would be at my waist height. The backlit Naim remote is rather lovely - especially the way it lights up when you move it :) There really isn't much between them functionally and in the end it's just down to personal preference on the sound. The EVO does have bass and treble controls which you'll be glad of if your tastes run to retro stuff like Television, Velvet Underground et al

I have got both of these units here to compare, and I simply cannot understand how you guys concluded this. The EVO 150 is cleaner across the frequency spectrum, with clearly better bass definition, and smoother more natural sounding treble with a broader, more 3d soundstage than the Naim. It is dramatically more powerful and handles low impedance and inefficient speakers with ease where the Atom struggles. The Streammagic app is slicker and more responsive than the Naim app on my devices. The inclusion of chromecast on the EVO is also a significant advantage, particularly for Qobuz users.

Guys that was a very long rant for a touch screen! It s not gonna change the way it sounds and Dirac live is the future much more than a touch screen. I had an M10. The sound is pretty good but similar of that of this Cambridge as you describe it. The big advantage of NAD is Dirac which a few reviewers have had time or will to explore properly. It is revolutionary in problematic rooms (most of our rooms) if someone spend the time to understand the room and Dirac itself since the basic curve leaves everyone unsatisfied with the bass(quantity). As per the touchscreen I might have touched it 2-3 times in the 2 years I had the M10 so if it s not desktop use I d say, whatever :). I predict that you will find the M10 a bit sterile too so I suggest to go deep into Dirac when you get it. Ciao

Great video! Only disagreement I have is regarding the touch screen - I have a Naim Nova, and initially also regretted the lack of touch screen until…. I started to notice the finger prints! I now think Naim and Cambridge are right with omitting the touch screen. The screen is meant to be looked at and not touched, and have unsightly finger prints all over it. It’s only my opinion of course!

One really, really important thing you forgot to mention (and it's a surprising omission given the "touchscreen touchscreen touchscreen" rant!) is the remote control that comes with this thing - it's an absolute beauty. I've had the good fortune of trialling the EVO 150 here in the UK, and whilst I'm not convinced by the whole all-in-one thing (though the Naim Uniti is a better option if you must go down that route), the remote control was one of those that you remember using. I disagree completely too with the whole touchscreen demand - even from your video I was itching to get a microfibre cloth to wipe away the greasy finger marks on the display!

The remote is beautiful to look at and feels good in the hand but it’s a) reminiscent of B&O remotes from the 80/90’s and is virtually impossible to use in dimly lit rooms. Beautiful design but not wholly functional in all situations.

@richardt3371 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I don't feel a resemblance to the old B&O remotes is a bad thing - we have mobiles/tablets if you want a touchscreen interface experience, but for those who like a bit of solid heft in the hand, then the Cambridge remote feels lovely. Though maybe that's just me! I thought it was simple enough to use - pronounced volume and function buttons were tactile and placed where you'd expect them - though again I didn't use in a dim room, so I take your point. Wasn't unhappy to see it go back, I don't feel bereft without it.

That's a bizarre criticism: "give me less power but a touch screen" like no, I need power for my 150 W 8 ohm speakers... and my touch screen is an iPad. I don't want my amp full of finger prints. The clinical sound or other issues are fair though. I'm looking for a powerful enough amp (at least 120 W 8 ohm) with HDMI ARC and good streaming and USB audio. I don't see much that surpasses this... maybe the sound is not too great but other reviewers claim otherwise... not sure what to think.

Out of the Uniti Atom, Evo 150, and NAD M33, I ended up with the M33 driving my Heresy IVs. It's definitely a but more expensive so I don't know if the comparison is fair, but where the 150 kind of failed the "musicality" test for Class D, the M33 excelled (for me), even over the Atom. I do hope to see your take on the M33 one day!
@robertbrody4032
@robertbrody4032 2 жыл бұрын
You guys really missed the point here. A touch screen is awful. It shows fingerprints and all owners would be doing is trying to keep it clean. There's just no advantage AT ALL to a touch screen. Who even messes with their amp face when they have a remote and apps? The level of detail from the 150 is on a significantly higher level and soundstage is also broader. Is it more clinical? Depends on your speakers. The 150 does a better job with the Magnepan's and also sounds more lively with my Duevel Planets. The Atom is, to my ears, a colored sounding component that sounds a bit too dark. These are all great components, but speakers and rooms along with varying tastes will be a factor in which are chosen.

A very good review. The key as you mentioned is go and listen to them - its going to be a personal preference. What music do you listen to, how loud is it going to be, and what speakers are you going to use, and even the room they will be used in. I had 90 mins in a listening room with my new speakers and both the Naim and the Cambridge audio units, and I liked the cleaner sharper sound the Evo 75 gave my music. The Naim felt warm, but the Evo gave me goose bumps. Touch screen - yes may be expecting that now for things with a price tag like this, but its not a deal breaker. I like the StreamMagic app it works around the way I listen to music - Spotify, Bluetooth to my PC, stream from my NAS media library it just works. It makes me smile when I put my music on - and considering that these are not budget systems you must be confident it can do that for you the next few years. The Evo 75 did that for me - you may hate it.

To me the non-touch screen is a non-issue, but a dry upper frequency range and lack of warmth is a deal breaker. I actually thought Hypex NCore would be more convincing than your comments suggest, given some other well-regarded products that use those same modules. However, premium HiFi brands are known to use their analog pre-amp design choices to "voice" amplifiers that use class-D modules, so perhaps this where the difference lies?

I’ve been waiting for this one! I like Kristi’s point that most of us haven’t owned the Atom and therefore don’t have that reference point or connection to it as the “reigning champ”. Most of us who don’t have experience with the atom who might be looking for an all in one, view the Atom and EVO equal competitors and I can see someone being very happy with whichever they choose. 100% this should have come with a touch screen! Would it require more processing power to keep one from feeling laggy or do they have a higher failure rate? I wonder why they didn’t include one… I think I prefer the styling of the EVO personally. +10 for the shirt! Always a great review 🙂. Regarding the touch screen, I think the question is how often would it actually be used? The unit might be tucked away or the owner might not want to be cleaning fingerprints all the time. With the advent of a remote control, people just don't want to get up if they don't have to. The bigger issue might be the treble presentation.

It's just that a high-level amplifier will remain a high-level amplifier in 50 years, and the presented electronic "whistle-making" will no longer be supported at the software level in 5-6 years and, accordingly, will turn into a pumpkin. The same can be said about the screen, which in 3 years will turn pink / blue / green, fill up, throw out a bunch of dead pixels, etc., and its replacement will rise to 70% of the cost of a new device ... Painfully familiar, though : -)

Firstly, I'm glad your Mother is recovering well and I hope all the Moms out there had a great Mother's Day. Next, what is this fixation on a touchscreen? I guess you guys are too young, mmm. Back in 1988, I was soooo happy my new pre-amp had a remote, so I could switch sources or adjust the volume from across the room. Now with my newer equipment and a control app on my Android phone, what is not to love? I still worry about seeing the display from across the room, but even that isn't really that important, with the app in hand. And if I'm using a tablet as the controller, it's even more better, eh? The only time I would be standing next to my pre-amp / receiver is to change or flip a LP. I think you guys need to buy a chair or a sofa for your living room and sit down for better musical enjoyment and stop hovering in front of the system. Just chill. :-) BTW, love the videos and getting Kristy's input on the products.

Just bought the EVO 150 and quite pleased with it. I agree about the neutral sound - it replaced an Arcam FMJ A32 - but glad it doesn't have a touch screen. It's controlled from an old iPad, which I've dedicated to use as a remote. I listen to internet radio most of the time and it works really well. Speakers are Spendor A5R. Gripes: I'd like the volume knob to have more 'feel' - it turns to easily and either detents or oil damping would give it a much more classy touch. Shame you can't change the icons on the source menu - the CD input is either a pair of RC plugs or an optical pentagon.

Andrew, what's your thought for how viable of a product these expensive all-in-ones are going to in say the year 2030? I mean we don't even know if the streamer will support music services or the mobile app will be around five years down the road. I like the idea of an all-in-one but practical me says most would be better off with buying a quality amplifier that could last decades and periodically swapping out with a cheaper but relevant DAC/Streamer every five years or so. I like what Naim, NAD, and Cambridge are doing here...but the lack of longevity for an all-in-one at this price point is too much of a hurdle for me to overcome.
@stevehamilton3181
@stevehamilton3181 3 жыл бұрын
I am with you on this. ‘Firmware’ type devices run out of support after 5-8 years+- and many tend to start to fail by then. Granted it was a cheapo pce of kit, but my sonos connect end like this. As beautiful and cool as they are, I am really leery of these new all in one units for the long haul. A good amp can last a long time and something makes me feel more comfortable adding streaming separates to one. And no one ever seems to discuss or consider it.
@BryanRuby
@BryanRuby 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevehamilton3181 I definitely don't want to take the joy from anyone that makes the purchase. I'd buy one if I wasn't so cheap. I think there is customer demand for good all-in-one's but I don't think it's additional features people are waiting for (admittedly a touch screen would help) but a lower price that justifies the purchase of a potentially short-lived product.

In the $3k price range, I would probably look at a more traditional A/B integrated that supports full digital interfaces. For about $600 more you can get something like the Cary Audio SI-300.2D. Not a lifestyle piece like the Evo - but gets you 300 watts per channel of Class A/B power, a Class A analog preamplifier, and a 2 channel AK4490EQ DAC. For an all in one system I would like to see you review the Cary Audio AiOS. 2 x 75W RMS Class A/B power with music streaming. Much more a lifestyle piece for about $2.4k.

So here's my issue with this product. I'm a CXNv2, XA81 and CXC separates owner. Nobody appears to be saying the Evo sounds as good as the CX range and audio stores have been offering some very good deals on streamer, CD transport and CXA81 amp. So this product is really about saving space, HDMI port & a neater design. If the budget stretched there's the Uniti Nova which can drive almost anything and sounds better than the Uniti Atom and the CX set. The CX set isn't much more expensive than the Evo 150. Cambridge's older Azur amp sounds just a bit nicer and richer than the CXA81 to my ears, except for soundstage width and that's about 9 years old. Then there's the NAD offerings. Leave the touchscreen aside, it doesn't seem this product delivers sonically. It's not exactly a bargain price.

I am wondering how you think these things will perform in terms of user experience in a few years? One point is pure functionality, e.g. the touchscreen you are mentioning, but more importantly sheer processing power that probably will be required. I am still rocking an almost 8 year old iPad Air for youtube, reading, and light gaming. However, each app takes (perceived) ages to load and multitasking is neigh impossible. As a dedicated device that still has its dearly loved place in my daily life I think it may still have a year or two in it, but then it will have to be replaced. Now, back to these super-integrated amps - if they become laggy or turn out to be unable to support important new functionality down the road, it would pain me to have to retire all that great (and expensive) audio circuitry just because the software part cannot handle the changing demands.
