This version is with Music. There is similar video with out if you'd rather here the grunts and groans of 40 year old iron flexing over the trail.
The Flat Fender Willys and the old GOAT FJ40 are back out at Tahuya ORV to take the South Loop Challenge. We are filming with the Skydio 2+ today, and ended up with a ton of awesome footage. So, this 2-part series will consist of one video tracking the FJ, and a second tracking the CJ2A.

Those old landcruisers are hard to beat! When I was young, I had a friend who had a 73 cruiser. I in my 55 cj5, and he in his cruiser would tear southern az up! Alot of fun. Miss those days. Hood vid.

Before my cruiser, I had 74 CJ5. Those old Jeeps were pretty unstoppable too. I’m guessing in AZ rust wasn’t as big of a problem tho 😂

Way neat video. When I was in middle school my dad worked in Panama for the US Army Tropic Test Center and we had a BJ-40. We went some really neat places, especially in the Western Panama province of Chiriqui. Thanks for sharing.

There is just something special with an old off-road rig over 40 plus years out in the trails that a new rig doesn't compare.

He's tough when the going gets rough. Dont know why toyota dont build these ute these days, the Landcruiser series is an expensive yacht for trails. And importantly, the driver's skill over these trail, is excellent
@FJAdventurer

It’s a shame they quit producing them. I think there is still a market for rigs like these. Maybe with the success of the new bronco, Toyota will bring some form of it back. Hopefully more “FJ40-ish” and less “FJ Crusier-ish”. That said, I love the simplicity of the classics.

What size wheels and tires are you running on your 40? I really like the look of the deep dish wheels.
@FJAdventurer
@FJAdventurer 3 ай бұрын
Those are 15”x9” Chevy square body rally wheels with 33”x10.5” BFG KO2 tires. I bought the wheels off Craigslist for $25 (for 5), and had the centers bored out a little to fit over Toyota hubs. Then I used self tapping sheet metal screws to attach FJ40 hub caps to them to get a semi-OEM look. I bought the tires off Amazon 😂

Great video... What suspension do you have installed on it?
@FJAdventurer
@FJAdventurer 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure what the springs are, but I think they are "Rough Country". They were on the rig when I bought it a few years back. They are worn out, rusted, and slipping laterally. I recently bought a new set of Pro Comp 2.5" springs to install. I'm just waiting on U-bolts to get here. The shackles are new and are greaseable "HFS" from www.coolcruisers.com/shacleafspri.html. The shocks are new Bilstein's 5125's I purchased from www.shockwarehouse.com/site/product.cfm?id=1538270.

During that video they were unknown springs. I’m guessing rancho, but worn out soft, slipping and sagging. But, I did have new Bilstein shocks. I replaced the springs recently with pro comps. They are much nicer, and not to stiff/harsh. I made a couple videos about it.

I agree wholeheartedly - just listening to the vehicle running along is soundtrack enough. To me, one of the best reasons to get out in the sticks like this is to get away from the yolo-crowd pumping a techno-track through their Bluetooth speakers... But keep the videos coming - looks like fun!!
@FJAdventurer
@FJAdventurer 2 жыл бұрын
@@tonydyvr that’s great feedback! Thanks, man. I struggle between narration, music and nothing at all. I’d like to grow the channel, but I worry 10 minutes of wheeling with no other media added would bore people. It’s quite the balancing act. I’m learning a lot.
@tonydyvr
@tonydyvr 2 жыл бұрын
@@FJAdventurer No worries - some extremely popular video channels have little to no extra sound added (like "my mechanics" - Swiss guy who restores old tools/etc.) As far as what you're making - the drone work is great, and for my money, ten minutes of unedited, unaltered time watching you guys wheeling is the closest thing to me actually being there. Not boring in the slightest!! In fact, to satisfy your own curiosity, maybe try uploading two videos of the same trip - one edited with narrative/music/etc. as you see fit, and one just background trail noise with nothing else. Then see which ones folks prefer. Just a thought. Keep it coming, tho'!!

@@tonydyvr I’ve been kicking around that exact idea. I have a part 2 to this video in the works already, but instead it follows the Willys instead of the FJ. I’ll upload it at the end of the week with nothing but the natural sounds of a 70 year old rig out wheelin’, and see how it does ;)

I've alwys liked the car, but it seems bit useless in real offroad. This trail is rather easy but still it's got stuck.
@FJAdventurer
@FJAdventurer 4 ай бұрын
Yeah - That spot was a combination of problems - short-ish wheelbase, and/or no front locker. A longer or shorter wheelbase vehicle would have traversed that spot easily, but my 40 was the imperfect length not to. Additionally, if I had a front locking differential (like many off-roading vehicles), it would have been a cake walk. The FJ40 is an incredibly capable vehicle in its stock condition. Most vehicles that want to keep up with it need modifications of some sort to do so. In other words, don't let this one video taint your perspective, they are amazing and cool vehicles :)
