Sometimes things happen, and they suck. I too wasn't old enough back then, but don't despair. Things are not so bad. We are about to get a Labour government. For all their flaws, they will begin the process of reconvergence with the EU, in effect massively increasing the probability that we return to the fold in some form. Likewise, popular opinion is majority in favour of rejoining the EU right now. Considering that the EU remains politically toxic, AND the fact that this is with the prospect of rejoining remaining far away and somewhat of a "political impossibility", this is reassuring. Especially consider that young people are increasingly favourable towards the EU, and that any rejoining of the EU itself would take place a decade from now, and the prospects of a 60% majority in favour of rejoining become plausible. There are some other possibilities which can only be considered with the benefit of hindsight, but which may prove to be the case. It could be said that the UK's exit has, in actuality, strengthened the EU. The disastrous handling of Brexit (or lack thereof in many cases) has dampened the hopes of nationalists within the bloc who had hoped to leave. Now, instead they seek to mold the EU to their designs. Whatever your opinion of their politics, this is a victory for Pro-Europeans, since it legitimises the EU politically, and makes the prospect of its dissolution more remote. When the UK (or its constituent nations, though most likely the UK) rejoins the EU, it is possible we will be able to do so without many of the "opt outs" that we previously had. As I gather, from my limited understanding, this would mean a commitment to Schengen and the Eurozone, amongst other things. In effect, we would be more integrated with Europe than ever before. Furthermore, the lack of the UK (this being the biggest anti-federalist member state of the EU) progress towards a European Federation may go more quickly. Already there are steps in that direction, though I am still anxious about the ability of the European States to agree to comprehensive treaty change in that direction. But nonetheless, when the UK joins, it is possible that the EU is more united and integrated than ever before, so we would be joining a greatly strengthened Europe. Essentially, for all the disasters of Brexit, and the catastrophic impact it has had and will continue to have on our country, from a longer perspective it MIGHT go in our favour. But these benefits are only really seen if the EU sorts itself out and if the UK (or its constituent countries) are able to gather enough popular support to rejoin (I don't think the EU will reject us, maybe France will put up a fuss, but if there's enough of a popular mandate at home and we've been converging for a decade I think we'll be able to join, especially if some of the more recent reforms come through). So there's still a lot of hard work to do on our parts. Britain must focus on reconverging with the EU, and building up an unchanging mandate in favour of not just rejoining the EU, but of the idea of a United Europe and everything it entails.

Глупость несуразная. В России 140 миллионов людей, это почти три Германии. Представь какой перевес это будет означать в Европарламенте. Ни США ни страны западной Европы не заинтересованы в том чтобы дать России фактически единоличную власть над Евросоюзом (Даже Турков десятки лет взять не могут (и не планируют) из-за того сколько у них населения). Не говорю уже про взрывоопасные терки с КНР. Евросоюзу не нужна общая граница ни со средней Азией ни с китаем (малюсенькая граница Турции и Греции является причиной постоянно возникающих миграционных кризисов). Россию могут только развалить и по частям принять, и то, там будут непрекращающиеся войны и ядерное оружие может попасть не в те руки (ни США ни ЕС не надо). И вообще не понятно зачем России нужен этот нео-совок. Просто вообще не понимаю. Сближение нас с ЕС означает что из России ливнёт вся рабочая сила туда, и уронит им зарплаты. А мы останемся без рабочих рук. И зачем нам, стране с кучей ресурсов, какие-то бюрократишки, которые могут только ограбить нас (ГДР и странами варшавского договора воспользовались, нажились на них, угробив им промышленность и украв молодежь). Плюс, главная геостратигическая задача США в регионе есть и была не допустить союза между Германией и Россией (поэтому и накачивают Польшу оружием, деньгами и инвестициями в экономику) ибо это была бы сила способная конкурировать с США (людской, промышленный, энергетический ресурс России + инженерная школа и мозги Германии, это сила в одном ряду с Китаем и США и новая холодная война). Ты хоть понял какую бессмысленную глупость сказал? Ты на глобусе видел Европу и Россию? Как вообще ты представляешь интегрировать самую большую страну в мире, с непроходимыми лесами, топями, вечной мерзлотой в малюсенький, с плотным населением Евросоюз?

@@thesmithersyoh no! You can travel freely through EU member countries! How horrible! Also you don’t have to be in the Schengen area if you’re a member of the EU, Ireland is member of the EU yet they aren’t a part of the Schengen area.

@@Nordbon1523 But it also allows people in from the EU without appropriate passport checks. Given the illegal immigrant crisis at the moment, i'd rather not give them another route to enter the UK. Besides, most people only ever used that freedom of movement for a 2 week holiday in Spain anyway (which they still can!)

@@thesmithersy the Schengen area only deals with internal borders, international immigration is the responsibility of the member countries. And as I said, you don’t have to be part of the Schengen area if you’re a member of the EU, like Ireland.

​@thesmithersy Mate, over 90% of people who come across the channel are able to claim asylums so being in Shengen would be better as fewer would die on the journey. Those who aren't eligible are returned to their country of origin, as per the refugee convention.

Nah man, better if we keep the idea of "regional unions". It is already hard to deal with an European Union, imagine that but you now have a trans-Atlantic union, not to mention the monumental shift in power from Europe to America, basically America would monopolize all bodies in the EU in no time. I still love the idea of a Noth American Union and an European Union friendship and alliance 👍
