Came across your channel a couple weeks ago and have been binge watching all your previous videos. Your tanks look incredible and I enjoy the format of your videos. I think my fav fish in this tank is Zeke the Zebra Obliquidens. I’m planning to set up a new 75 gal tank in the coming weeks and was thinking a couple angelfish and Corys but lately I’ve been considering an African cichlid tank… I wish I could have them all!

Hi. I am starting up an acrylic 135 tank. I will put peacock and some Haps, that don't get huge. It's more affordable to get the in the 2 inch range. But I am curious on how long they will take to get to 4 inches. I know they won't color up until then. I just am wondering on the growth rate. I love your tank. Stunning! Thanks!!
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer 5 ай бұрын
Great question! They do have different growth rates. Like my venustus took a long time to grow as did some of my other predator haps. The peacocks grow more quickly. One thing about the two inch range is that you might wind up with the wrong sex. They are easier to sex once they hit the three inch mark or so for the most part.

@HapiPETSWM
@HapiPETSWM 5 ай бұрын
@@CichlidCharmerno only the zebra obliquidens, but they are 6 with 2 males and 4 females. Because the beta male never coloured up (or some reason) he would only ever go on charges against my other cichlids, but I raised a fry to maturity that just so happened to colour gorgeous like your Zeke, very steady breeders but don’t need a special place like some ob or peacocks do. To be honest I wish I had your fish and set up because each fish is just cruising and not looking for trouble. This being said my table swelled with peacocks before I could count to 10, I love having my wife involved but it always seems to have a catch, like “last one” or “just this tank” 😂

Aw man, my Venustus had lymphocystus in the mouth too. To the point where he struggled to eat. A number of people said I was delaying the inevitable and risking other fish catching it if coming in direct contact with him. Apparently this is something that most fish carry as a virus(?) but not all fish end up with the cauliflower growths from it. Hate the cruel to be kind days. Worst part of the hobby

Oh boy. In the last week I've noticed that Gary will take one of the monster pellets I always feed him, but now after a minute or two, he'll spit it back out. He can only eat smaller pellets. I'm hoping the extra water changes help, but we'll see. Monty's eye issue is going away already, so that's good at least. Have a great week, Paul!

Finally got my 180 all set up and full of peacocks and haps (mostly juvenile). I have one red shoulder peacock who heards the rest of the fish to 1/3 of the tank. Is this pretty typical of the top fish on the totem pole or is he a jerk fish? Also added on yellow lab because of Ray. Seems perfectly happy with the peacocks and haps
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer 4 ай бұрын
A 180 is a good tank, sir! So that red shoulder is probably a jerk fish, unless he only occasionally does this. I had an Insignis hap who liked to herd everyone to one half of the 240. BUT he only did this occasionally. It was fairly rare. And as long as no one is getting hurt, and it doesn’t bother you, you could probably just deal with it. Be aware though that the stress levels of everyone else will go up. And stress leads to illness. You’ve got yourself a little Ray of sunshine do ya? What a great fish. I’m liking my new one, Icarus, as well.

Hey cichlid charmer, I have just set up a 70 gallon tank, however it is not like most tanks of that size. The tank i have set up is 6 foot in length, 1 foot wide and around 1.5 feet tall. I currently have 5 fish in there, an electric yellow mbuna, a flameback (lake Victorian cichlid), a small frontosa, a livingstonii and a red kadango cichlid. How many fish do you think i can have in my aquarium considering there is 6 feet of swimming room unlike most other 70 gallons. Also do you have any recommendations in terms of what fish i could put in there? Not looking for the boring standard stuff, but also not the really expensive stuff 😂. Thinking of adding all three of haps, mbunas and peacocks (not too many peacocks as i know they can be trouble). I know its not best to mix all three but I think i will be able to handle it and i also have a spare aquarium if any need to be taken out due to aggression. Please let me know of your thoughts, it would be a great help
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer 5 ай бұрын
I’ve never seen a 70 gallon like that - you’re right. Very unusual. So you have the length going, which is good. The depth and height still play a part with these guys in my opinion. And that’s all I’m offering - my opinion. I would still stick to six-inches due to the turnaround room. I can’t say it would be definitely a terrible situation to have a ten inch fish trying to turnaround in a 12 inch tank, but for me that would be way too tight. So the livingstonii I think will need more room once they mature. The frontosa definitely will. He will be larger than 12 inches. The borleyi and the others are great. If it were me, I’d have about 20 or so max six or seven-inchers depending on filtration and how into water changes I was 🤔. I’m not into overstocking, but those who are will tell you that you could go 30 or maybe 35 six inch fish or so, but I like my boys to have room. I think it’s more about the right balance of fish and personalities than the number as far as reducing aggression. Victorians would be great haps for a tank like that. That’s my two cents anyway. Thanks for the great question and for watching! 🥰

I would not keep lake Victorian cichlids with mbunas for sure. They will get chased around and have their fins ripped up. Plus they lose their color when they are stressed. I have a nyererei cichlid with some zebra obliquidens cichlids and he gets chased around a lot by one of them. He no no longer has brilliant color anymore. I originally had him with peaceful fish like a Frontosa, a brichardi and an electric blue acara. All of those fish are not too mean yet they can hold their own against the nyererei. Before the other Victorian cichlids the nyererei was like brilliant rainbow but now he is dull. I tend to think Victorian cichlids do better without other Victorian cichlids in their tank. They fight each other too much.
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer 5 ай бұрын
You could be on to something there. If my Victorian has a hard time I’ll move him. So for the Victorian s in Alcatraz are good except for some minor chasing between Eduardo and Monty. We shall see once the new two get some size on ‘em.
@benjaminmorley1007
@benjaminmorley1007 5 ай бұрын
As of now my nyererei gets chased relentlessly by my zebra obliquedens. My experience with Victorian cichlids is that they fight each other a lot yet leave the other types of fish alone. The nyererei is really beautiful when he is colored up and before the zebra obliquedens he was always brilliantly colored and swimming at the top of my tank with my electric blue acara. I had purchased the zebra obliquedens from a pet store because he was stuck in a small tank with a Kenyi mbuna and the mbuna had torn up his fins and I felt sorry for him so I bought him and then he grew larger than my nyererei and he chases him around all the time. I personally feel that one Victorian cichlid per fish tank is best. And they better with less aggressive fish like South American cichlids or Tanganyikans or Malawi haps.
