Not only is prevention better than a cure, its much less expensive!
Gum disease is the single biggest cause of tooth loss around the world.
It is easy to detect and easy to treat (especially in the early days).
In the UK, you can see a hygienist for (usually) less than £100, or if you ignore the issue, then it will cost thousands to fix later.
You can find me on other socials and if you're local, get in touch from my website: linktr.ee/dr.sehmi

My Periodontist told me that 10% of the population has periodontal disease that is hereditary. He also told me that the number one cause of periodontal disease is misaligned teeth. It is the gaps that are form by misaligned teeth in the first place that allow bacteria to get into the gaps and burrow deep into your gums. Which, if you've ever seen old people who still have all their teeth, like my mother who in her 80s, had perfectly aligned teeth and no periodontal disease. For most of her life she just brushed her teeth, and only over the last decade before her death started flossing them, which was something new that was introduced at that time. My periodontist also told me to make sure I take vitamins, particularly vitamin C, which helps with the inflammation and can actually help tighten the teeth in the socket. My God, he was right. I started taking vitamins, C, D, and calcium, plus a multivitamin and my teeth are no longer mobile. I'm sure that with the deep cleanings, which I get every 3 months for several years now, has helped. Thank you for these very informative videos.

You are absolutely right! We have to be intentional when brushing, not just going through the motion! That’s why I help my kids until they are at a good age where I think I can trust them to do it for themselves! 💖

I just wish that all dentists were as good at communicating as you. I went through two sets of dentists (NHS and private) and hygienists who did not make this clear and now I am in trouble. Of course another downside is the horrific cost of treatment at a periodontist clinic. Crazy.

Recession? Every crowned tooth in my mouth has gum recession, despite my excellent hygiene and religious flossing. The damn dental work -- and we are all sold on its dubious necessity -- leads to gum recession. It's iatrogenic.

Hi, please can you tell me whether Covid infection pre- or post-implants can prevent osseointegration, or lead to loss of dental implants? I’ve read conflicting reports online. I’m 57 and have very good oral hygiene and gum health, but broke a molar badly a few years ago, which recently needed extracting. I’m wondering about implants..,

I didn't feel any pain when my dentist probed my gums and I do have receding gums some with pockets, he said I have advanced gum disease and will need to have them all pulled out. I have yet to see my periodontist this week and find out just how much damage there is. I know three back ones on one side are beyond saving and did ask my dentist about implants but he wasn't keen on the idea and simply stated they were far too expensive. I live in Australia

An interesting statement is, that recession treatment has better perspective, if it treated trauma damages like from to hard brushing. But if recessions come from infections (periodontitis) the perspective of rebuilding lost tissue is bad, you said. What you not discussed, is why some people get gum infections and other not. Yes you said, continues brushing of teeth, smooth but after every meal is important. But this may be half of the truth. It is documented, that changing nutrition and livestyle can be the essential approach to heal periodontitis. In practice this means "healthy food" with raw vegetables, fruits etc.. Not so much empty calories like cake etc. and sleeping enough etc.. This approach is repeatedly stated as helpful in the case of "unhealable" periodontitis. Do you have any practical expierence with this them ? If a livestyle change can heal periodontitis, than perhaps lost tissue (gum and bone) can also be rebuilt after nutrition change stopped the tendency of gum imflammation. I think a nutrition change is a necessare base treatment for any reconstrution treatments of dental tissue. This may be also valid for every implant treatment. Meaning that rebuilding bone for implants also can only succeed, if the patients takes care for healthy live.

Totally agree on the nutrition factor. It´s the most important in my opinion and my experience. I know people who don´t even brush their teeth very regularly, maybe only twice a week, but they have no gum disease and strong healthy teeth. However they do eat nutritious whole foods, nothing processed no junk. If your oral microbiome is healthy you can get away with being less diligent. And this only happens through the right foods. From as long as I can remember I have always observed how foods I eat affect my body, overall, not only teeth and gums. If i eat more unhealthy for a while, I can tell the gums will change. Then what I do I have a couple of foods that I will consume to directly fix things before any damage can happen. One great one is called "mojo picon", it´s a Spanish kind of dip basically bell peppers and hot peppers and cumin seeds and garlic and some olive oil. You blend it all up. It´s great for the gums. Its like a high dose of Vit C and more. Few big spoons a day and gums directly get light pink and strong and heathy. At least for me it always works. Or another one I love is a good sea buckthorne oil. Just have a few spoons at night before going to sleep, you can even cover the gums in the oil and leave it there. It´s high in omegas, not only 3 but also 7, and Vit C as well. My gums like this stuff.

Oh I never knew that a probe with round end is used to check for gum disease! That’s new knowledge I glean from you. It seems like I have been measured only by some sharp tool which tells you the numbers. Does a regular dentist or hygienist have such a probe? And that’s the absolute litmus test for presence of gum disease, even if a patient doesn’t bleed when brushing or flossing? How about some bleeding if doing charting with the normal sharp probe? Is that definitely gum disease?
@drgurssehmi

The sharp probe is only for the teeth. I can't image a dentists using it for the gums. The two probes look really similar

hello! I went to a hygenist and she said I have pocketing of 5 on my back molar. If I start flossing now, as I haven't been, could I help the pocket shrink? Is it the gums regrowing or the bone regrowing that helps pockets shrink?
@user-qs2lt6ql7x

neither, technically. It'll be the gums reattaching to the tooth.

Dr Sehmi will you please also discuss that your teeth can all rot from prescription drugs as well? Because there is no other reason on earth that all of my teeth all of a sudden were decaying at the gum line. I thought and thought that thought again WTH?! And then I realized that I have been taking a prescription medication for the last 23 years and it destroyed my teeth. There is no other plausible reason. I would really, really, really appreciate you thinking about that and then multiply how you feel about yourself anyway. Even if you had no idea. Who reads the thousands and I mean thousands in the papers and he’s multiple of warnings you get with each prescription renewal. But I’m in the hospital without it. And now more added to the mix because I am an over medicated American but I can still function mostly.
