In the pilot he’s a cunning and hyper focused assassin. In the comic he’s just autistic as fuck, and I mean that literally.

Reading it now, seems to be a barrel of laughs. But yeah, he just seems out of place sometimes, and doesn't get most cats demeanor. Especially with The Savoys getting him to hatchet someone one, when it wasn't warranted.

As a person whos only watched hte pilot, thats not the Mordecai I though of-

Mordecai is always pictured shooting and writing right handed in the comic and all official artwork, and iirc Tracy has clarified he is not left handed on either twitter or tumblr (I don't remember which). The misconception comes from the auxiliary he tricks Grombach with being left handed.

@@tatsugirifan Okay, I recalled in one of the later comics that the guy he eventually let's go to find out who killed Atlas pointed out he was a left handed shooter.

@@musearrives2am Grombach (the guy he interrogates) assumes Mordecai is left handed because of the left handed gun he confiscates from him, which Mordecai later reveals is an auxiliary. He then asks Nico to give him his real gun and proceeds to shoot at Grombach's group right handed. I misinterpreted this as him being left handed on first read too so I get it :)

I was channeling Mordecai to help me clean the kitchen the other night, and wound up discussing the effort with my friends in a way that led to a fanfic I'm partly through writing: Mordecai's hanging out in this mansion waiting for a guy to come home, but he gets bothered by little signs of disarray and eventually they trigger him to go on a cleaning spree. And when the guy comes home a couple hours late, he gets the mother of all lectures about being a slob and gets dragged into helping Mordecai finish up the house, kinda browbeaten like that poor schmuck in the car in that one strip, until the house is finally spotless. And then they look around and it's perfect and Mordecai breathes a sigh of satisfaction and even the guy admits his house looks a lot better, and he thanks Mordecai, and Mordecai accepts the thanks and gives him some tips about future cleaning or whatever and then leaves. And the guy looks around at his freshly clean house and appreciates the change. And then there's a knock on the door. Mordecai's back. "Did you forget something?" "Yes, well, it completely slipped my mind, my reason for coming here in the first place." BANG. He'd been there waiting to kill the guy, and just got distracted 😂 I am so looking forward to getting this piece finished and posted. It's the first black comedy piece I've worked on for Mordecai -- the other fics I've posted so far have all been dramatic or light-hearted fare -- and it feels so in keeping with the Mordecai of *Symmetry*

I would prefer if he was 99% serious with some slight cracks here and there, but those being more 'sentimental' than goofy.

I don't think his goofiness is part of his character, it's just he's so comically OCD, socially awkward, and straight-laced that we find him goofy.

socializing and murder are two VERY different skills, he's awe inspiringly good at one and comically awful at another, full package :D

In my writing and my reading/viewing/playing I typically prefer drama over comedy, quite strongly. In fact, much of "modern comedy" turns me off (I refer to it as "that Adam Sandler stuff" and whenever a movie promo makes use of that style of comedy I expect I won't enjoy the movie). But I think the combination of a character who is highly dramatic with one who, in specific ways, is completely the opposite... it works. The straight man being the butt of the joke is a long-standing tradition; add Neurodivergence and its inability to intuitively grasp social conventions and you have a beautiful package. Not to mention that most of the comedy comes from as it were outtakes -- non-canonical or side-canonical pieces, rather than the core tale. But the main thing is, he's never *trying* to be goofy; he very clearly doesn't understand how to fit in, and that's inherently humorous. And the world of fiction has more than enough scary mysterious killers; adding a dissonant note improves the overall. There's a character in the anime *Slayers* called Xellos. He starts off as a comedic annoyance who calls himself "the mysterious priest" and is just weird and oddly intrusive (breaking rules about social distance, for example), but by the end of that first episode you get the idea that he's a lot more than he seems. Eventually it gets revealed that he is literally the most powerful mazoku (sorta like "demon" but not exactly) walking the earth who isn't one of the "mazoku lords" or the actual god-figures -- and the comedy doesn't take away from that revelation, it makes it richer and more terrifying, because he's so unpredictable. The original voice actor for the English dub played him as 100% comedy, which *did* take away from the drama; the voice was grating and didn't allow the viewer to perceive the character in any way other than the annoying comedy role. But the voice actor for seasons 4 and 5 turned it around and showcased a character who balanced the comedy and the drama/power pretty dang well, and they collectively added up to a quite memorable antagonist (who's sometimes an ally). In *Trigun* the main character Vash the Stampede gets introduced full-on dumbass comedy -- which makes the first couple episodes all but unwatchable to me, *but* provides an incredible contrast for when his true nature gets revealed. And his use of his "people think I'm a dumbass" quality to get people to underestimate him and allow him to do things he couldn't if they were taking him seriously, that's *weaponized* dumbassery. He once strolls straight into a hostage situation by wearing earphones, chewing bubblegum and blowing bubbles, and dancing around bullets like he's simply dancing weird and doesn't even realize people are shooting at him -- it gets him inside, makes him one of the hostages, and puts him in a position to dismantle the threat. So combining a dramatic character with a comedic character can definitely work. And heck, Mordecai got introduced with a gag about not realizing his allies were joking about something -- black humor of the way he butchers a body just because they told him that's how it's done. So it's not like the misunderstanding of social nuance hasn't been with him since his very first onscreen appearance... and it certainly doesn't make him any less chilling.

On the author's tumblr, she made it very clear that Mordecai is his funniest when he's trying the hardest to be serious in unserious situations. He makes a grand total of one (1) attempt at a joke the entire series and I had to be told by the author it was supposed to be funny to get it 😭 (his boss was making fun of him by asking if he separated parts of a dismembered body in alphabetical order and he answered, entirely serious: "the 'a' is for the amigdala"). It's not that he's goofy, it's that he's constantly using the wrong tone- precisely because he doesn't know how to be anything other than a cold hearted killer- and the absurdity of it is funny
