The compact crossover segment is more fiercely competitive than ever, but the redesigned 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan has the skills to play with the best of them. A thorough redesign gives the new Tiguan a more modern look, a nicer interior with upgraded technology, and just the right driving dynamics for a family hauler. We got our first taste behind the wheel, and the Tiguan impresses even if it doesn't stand head-and-shoulders above the pack.
The exterior redesign is successful if not groundbreaking, with clean styling that looks modern without going overboard. The real improvements are inside, where a massive 12.9-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard on most trims. VW's latest infotainment software is a big step forward with quick responses and straightforward menus. Attractive materials abound as well, though a few cheap plastic panels remind you this isn't a luxury vehicle.
On the road, the Tiguan hits a nice middle ground between comfort and handling prowess. The ride is composed over bumps, managing body motions well without feeling too firm. There's a smidge of fun when you push it hard, with well-weighted steering and a planted feel through fast corners. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder has enough pep for daily driving, though it can sound a bit thrashy when pushed.
Space and practicality are high points, even by crossover standards. There's plenty of room for four tall adults to stretch out, and clever touches like a sliding/reclining rear seat maximize versatility. The squared-off cargo area boasts an enormous 652-liter capacity with the rear seatbacks up. For comparison, that beats key rivals like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson.
The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan makes a compelling case for itself, but doesn't run away from rivals like the Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V, or Hyundai Tucson when you consider the whole package. Pricing will be key - VW has a habit of packing on expensive option packages that can make the Tiguan pricier than some might expect. But get the right version at the right price, and VW's new compact crossover absolutely deserves a spot on your shopping list.
