In this video, I share six gray watercolors. These pigments can be used to neutralize bright colors and mute the natural bright colors of watercolor. Three of them are my favorites. Watch to the end of the video to find out which of these colors I most highly recommend. #neutraltint #watercolorgrays #paynesgray

I LOVE Moonglow. I love granulating colors and Moonglow is just so mesmerizing. It is one of my favorite colors of all time.

Cool greys vs warm greys always make the difference to a painting. A very helpful video, thank you. Mixing can be a bit haphazard for a relative newbie like me, so some good greys are handy to have easy to hand. Nearly everybody uses Payne's Grey or they mix Burnt Sienna with Ultramarine Blue to get the tone they're looking for. Jane's Grey is a lovely Daniel Smith grey, but it's basically the mix of those two colours above.

I agree. I have made a habit of mixing French Ultramarine and Burnt Umber (instead of Burnt Sienna). I love the gray that this combination produces. But the convenience of a few good grays like Payne's Gray and Neutral Tint on my palette is extremely helpful in my watercolor practice. Have a great day and thanks for watching.

Yes, this was helpful, thanks Kris. I love to mix my own greys, but I also love to have reliable and consistent greys out of the tube. I would add that the "temperature" of a grey is more of a spot on a 2D (or 3D) map than a spot on a linear scale.

Excellent point. Thanks for adding this insight. I should have shared this image of Quiller's color wheel....which I usually have in the back of my mind when thinking about relative color values - m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91Nv0hJpDXL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Great video! I have all these colors as well; I love grays for value studies and moody monochromatic scenes. I'm glad you included the Mayan Dk Blue on the grays palette, I always use it as a gray too. One idea, if you have not tried Daniel Smith's Sodalite Genuine, I highly recommend it, since you like granulation. It's a Primatek paint with an astonishingly beautiful color with incredible granulation. I think the color falls somewhere between Indigo and Mayan Dk Blue.

Most of these colors are low staining. Indigo is medium staining. All this information is found on the Daniel Smith website or as part of the Amazon product listing. You can conveniently follow the links in the video description. Cheers!

Very helpful Kris! I needed to add a few neutrals to the outside wells. I may throw in a dark perroline green with a cool black mixed in. I know you suggest watercolor books to buy, ( or check out at the library which I probably owe $ 10,000 to, from 25 years ago. Lol. ). Can you suggest a good one for lighting and shadows? Thanks. Love the paintings behind your studio filming table. Really beautiful! - Messy Mendy. 🌞🌗🌙
