According to Capcom, it parodies World Masterpiece Theater as a whole and not any specific WMT entry.

Probably, the part of "and the Mysterious Village" comes from the first Layton game (I'm talking about the japanese title. In the english version, it was changed to "and the Curious Village"). Layton games uses an art style similar to WMT.

Same. Definitely look into the early design draft for the original game since we almost got cyborg future cops fighting ghosts instead of the cheesy classic spooky mansion full of zombies we all know and love. 😆
