I'm doing research in reinforcement learning and I had the chance to have someone from sony AI present their work on sophy to our research group a few months ago. Glad to see that it works so well

I think the important thing here is that the GT franchise has always been about being a “driving simulator”. What they’re realizing is they also need it to be a “racing simulator” as well. Driving and racing are two different things. And too many of GT’s single player races feel like a Sunday drive, and not a race.

Sophy can be really fast, as experienced by many players firsthand in the time-limited Race Together preview event, they could really put up a fight even in underpowered cars. They scaled it back for most people, especially the raw pace, a bit too much imo. I think what they aimed for was to tune it so that if you are half decent fast, you can catch the leader within three laps on expert difficulty. I hope they give more difficulty options in the future, maybe even the superhuman fast one that GTWS drivers couldn’t win against.

I really hope GT will allow us to adjust AI Sophy with a slider or number percentage to get the right difficulty level for all players.

It’s always great to watch a video where the person is excited about the subject. Watching this made me actually open up GT7 and update it.

Imagine if FM2023 had a quarter as good of AI as this. thats basically what they advertised.

This is honestly the biggest change ever, and I hope it continues to expand to enhance the single player experience. When that happens, the brain dead AI will be no more after 25+ years

It's a really great feature. It feels organic. i'm totally hyped. Hope they will extend it to custom race and championship, with weather, tyre wear and fuel. For now it's quite balanced with road cars and gr if they are not tuned (stock tyres for road cars and hard compound for gr). This version of sophy is not that fast. One or 2 step more in the difficulty would be appreciated.

Don't have a PS5, but I like the AI, looks very interesting!

I think the options for this ai will come, this with the psvr2 makes for a amazing experience

Sophy isn't as hard as the first time we seen it but it still is awesome and the fastest sophy will pounce if you make a mistake.

We need a PC Version.

Gt spec ll update was a total gamechanger for gt7 in so many ways its really packed with content and quality of life inprovments

Even a slower AI which is able to defend believable and somewhat intelligent can be so much fun as you really have to plan a good and clean overtake.

Man, I wish they'd do a PC release, or find a way to support ultrawide (and FOV/seat adjustment) on the PS5. I would buy this so fast.

The AI in Project Cars 3 was the best Ive experienced for a console game using a controller honestly. You can adjust difficulty and aggression level to suit your skill level. PC2 didn't work out for me with controller so it probably has similar option/AI. The racing is neck and neck and it depends on the tracks. I will try GT7 again with the updates sometime and hope to experience that intense race against the AIs.

I remember playing FLATOUT 2, SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO already, and there was a simple element to its hilarious AI that, paradoxically, made the game more complex, more unique than any other racing game: The AI reacted to your being near them, and their being near each other. Yes, they obscenely crashed into one another, cos flatout 2 had other objectives than sim racers now, but ive always wondered how the flatout 2 devs managed to do what so many other franchises have been miles away from achieving in terms of ai reaction. I don't know about programming, but the ai has a standard racing line, so how can it not change it when two things happen: other cars are less than x meters away, and their car is accelerating (cos that means the car is in a straight so it's safe to change racing lines). Hopefully Sophy becomes the way all the ai cars in gt7 behave, regardless of the game mode

This version of Sophy is like a B rating (versus the A+ type of thing it was before). Definitely been 'detuned'

Sophy 2.0 for the AI on PS5 is absolute deal breaker. Thats why GT7 SPEC II right now is the BEST!

Sophy can work to train ppl work offline. I am hoping to develop my skills to prepare a race in the future. You can race with the same car with sophy and if you are slow you find places to improve by watching it. Right now it is slow, but first version was super fast. I hope to grt that version in future (maybe they can introduce it just for some categories like GT3 or GT4, even that would be awesome.)

I think SOPHY is a big step forward. But, they don't fight you on e your pass them. Very fun racing them. I agree about the Audi R8 also

The original Sophy was like Skynet, unbeatable. Glad they lowered the difficulty

@randomcallsign The Audi drives so well because GT7 had huge "physics" update some time ago like in march or april. All cars are great to drive now in GT7

Would like if it was less fighty and more speedy. Like if you get one axle along side they wont block or fight, just stay in their line. Would also like if one could randomize how fast cars are depending on driver, so we don't just expect ai to be of a certain speed with the same outcome of "this car is faster than that one, so it will win", it could even be dynamic, like doing 3 good laps and 2 not so good laps, not letting player by so easily, making big mistakes(like late brake into grass or wall, too much oversteer/understeer, too much speed into corner, etc), all depending on ai driver stats(consistency score, agressive score, speed score, safety score). This is good progress considering how bad GT ai is in this century, but it doesn't solve the main issue for me which is their lack of speed.

I think when sophy as to do a longer race whith pitstops it will suffer.as i think it can not judge time and tactics .but lets hope it can in the future.

They need to adjust the pp for the car you're driving. I have almost no stock cars.

Here's hoping that eventually Sophy will be implemented on all tracks and custom races with the ability to adjust difficulty to your liking for increased payouts. I'm sure we'll get there eventually, but I have some ideas on how they could take the system even further. Instead of just having selectable difficulty levels for each race it would be great to see higher difficulty AI organically integrated into a proper career mode with a fairly linear progression. Unfortunately I doubt something like that will ever be added to GT7 at this point, but it's nice to dream nonetheless. Anyway, that would mean in lower level races (Nat-b, Nat-A) you would face a lower level AI which is slower and makes mistakes, and as you progress through the licenses and the career to higher level races the AI would improve as well. Not just drive faster cars like in every GT game prior, but actually improve their racecraft, attack and defend more aggressively, make less mistakes. This would more closely simulate the level of skill you would expect to see in GT3 and Gr.1 races and make them a proper late game challenge that you have to work for. This would give a real sense of progression as you have to improve your own driving skills to move up from doing Nat-B races in "reasonably priced cars" with regular weekend warrior drivers, to racing the toughest AI in a proper Gr.1 endurance championships. To add even more depth to the AI, you could give them all names, faces and backstories so you get to know who you're racing like in real life. Each racer would be a unique "person" with their own driving style, strengths and weaknesses. You could even develop rivalries with other drivers if you knock them off track or just barely beat them in a race, which could make them drive harder and more aggressively in the future. This would bring a sense of immersion we've never seen in a GT game and would take the single player experience to the next level.

7:03 Claiming gt sophy isn't the fastest while you are in second place with a six second plus gap on lap three of four with almost less than a minute to make that up????

Assetto Corsa and rFactor2 are worshipped by all sim racers. Sure they drive well when you're hotlapping... AC driving feel is untouchable... but their ai is not great. Might be even better on GT7 now. Cheers.

Sophie could make me sell my Xbox n G920 etc and go PS but ive got a ton of racing titles to re-buy if i do so I'll keep an eye on her progress for now.

From what I played they are nerfing the AI cars even when bop is on (gr4/3/2).

Is this the answer, though? For starters, let’s not pretend this is REALLY AI, but human trained AI. That means, at PD’s usual glacial pace, we won’t see an ‘all tracks, all cars, all conditions, all distances’ artificial opponent system for about 20 years..! Plus it does nothing to clean up online racing, if anything, it will disincentivize players looking for a clean race to consider the online stuff. I predict that online will become even more populated with ‘car racing is WAR!’ mentality players. Sophie, if it becomes more standard offline, will force bad drivers (who won’t be able to get a cheap victory over the original GT AI) more and more to Sport Mode. That’s the exact OPPOSITE of what most of us online players want! The ‘proper’ application of AI should be better stewarding of online racing. Who hit who first? Who got pushed off through no fault of their own? Who dive bombed from too far back to make the apex? Who pushed who into a wall or the pit lane? AI could help answer many of those questions, and return online to those interested in a SPORT, not a combat simulator! But PD are not interested in making stewarding their #1 concern. Making offline the only place you can find competent clean racing against Sophy is a ringing indictment of PD’s development path…

I hope they add events with the new Ai instead of three laps races.

No, sory! Sophy still not defends their positions well, still not good! Needs to receive more updates. Geoff Cramond did this in Gp3 and 4, and pcars 2 if not wrong. But its a good start for Gt.

Sophy deserves properly tuned cars. Stock ones are holding it back too much.

It would be cool if an AI got punted they would be more aggressive and can attempt to hit you or overshoot corners.
