I had no idea moles weren’t rodents 😳 thanks for the heads up. Also, stepping on tin is not a big deal for those who couldn’t gather that from the snakes being in burrows or under pieces with large gaps….That being said, we do try to avoid it but sometimes it’s the safest place to step, and other times the tin is completely covered in grass or leaves. It happens.

Moles are most certainly not rodents. They are insectivores (members of the Order Insecitivora). Lots or rodents eat invertebrates, some eat bigger things than invertebrates (squirrels eat nestling birds and more), but rodents are basically seed-eaters/vegetarians, in the main. (Shrews and hedgehogs are insectivores too. Rabbits and hares are lagomorphs.)

@@DevynPlaysGames WOW, who knew!!!!!! Just fancy that!!!!!!! Moles are not actually insectivores as they eat pretty much any invertebrate, and plenty of those are not insects. They probably eat small mammals too - a nest of baby mice chanced upon would probably be eaten. How deep into your pointless comment do you want to go? It will come down to dentition, or do you want to talk about Scalopinae? What I posted originally was/is totally correct and easily understood by anyone.

Moles actually are not rodents. They are insectivorous mammals perfectly adapted to subterranean life. Very cool!

I went herping today for the first time in a good while. My very first snake of the year happened to be a large Eastern milksnake. She looked old and scarred up but was otherwise healthy and actually had what was probably her first meal of the year in her. Probably a deer mouse. I replaced her board and put her back. I also got my pet native reptiles out of their hibernation boxes and back in their outdoor enclosure. Unfortunately I have some sad news. My oldest female five lined skink who I had actually captured 8 years ago passed away. She likely was elderly but I have had baby five lined skinks that I had raised from hatchlings and kept for literally their entire lives live for 12 years in my care. I really love that species and breed them just for the primary purpose of keeping the species stocked on my property. I ALWAYS keep a few adults in captivity for breeding purposes to assure that I will always have them on my property.

@@NKFherping thank you very much!! I just got this message. I also breed Eastern box turtles but I adopted most of them from a rescue. I do have 2 that I have taken out of the wild because their entire habitat was bulldozed to build a huge Amazon warehouse here in Hagerstown Maryland. They were literally in the road and had no home to even go back to. They are a male and a female. Those 2 are doing great but I did have to take a turtle to the vet the other day to be treated for a respiratory infection. I'm very thankful that I have a veterinary office only 3 blocks from my house that I can take my turtles to if they get sick. Lots of people would probably let a turtle pass away but mine always get to the vet if there is anything wrong with them. Some of my females have been laying eggs lately.

Wow, wow and wow. Sheer beauty - copperheads (by a very, very, very long way - one of, or the most beautiful snakes in the entire world), hognoses and rattlers (canes and pygmies especially). Fantastic herping!!! Why do I find hognoses so attractive???

Hognoses are pretty hard to beat, they can be vibrantly colored and even when they’re not the subtle beauty is striking.

I bet you didn’t realize this was going to be such a “controversial” video when you posted it did you, Noah? People love to nitpick & critique others behind the safety of their computer screen. I’m sure you are confident enough in your abilities to not give them any credence, but just in case-for what it’s worth (not much😜) I’m adding- don’t listen them. You obviously care very much for the animals you are herping and would never intentionally harm them. The vast majority of your viewers know this. It’s a lot of work. Talking to land owners, scouting trips, etc. You can also set up your own tin on any property you can get access to.

Another excellent vid Noah! I have a question, I've been attempting to find more milksnakes but I never see them even if Inat says they're in the area I'm looking. Is there some sort of specific micro-habitat that these guys prefer? Most info is pretty broad and it's hard to tell what actually works.

They can be pretty tough to dial in, but generally cool days during spring are the best bet. If you’re seeing Ringnecks or other tiny food snakes, you’re probably on the right track. Just make sure the rocks go back perfectly so you can check again them next time.

@@NKFherping Thanks! Ringnecks are weirdly rare in my area but I'll keep a look out for good Storeria habitat. I think it's very interesting because the one time I did find a milk it was in the same spot I consistently find brown and redbellies.

I understand going out looking for snakes. I would go with my Dad. We didnt have cell phone back then to take pictures. And camera 's were bulky. My question is with all you photos are they just for your purpose or are you planning on making a book with them in it ? I was just wondering because you've gotten some cool shots. 😊

Most snakes will be more bitey on hot days, but handling snakes gently goes a long way when it comes to avoiding bites. Gentle grip and and little pressure as possible.

@@NKFherping yeah definitely. I’ve only ever hiked the racers I’ve found, never flipped one under one of my boards while it’s coiled up, so they’re always on the move and fast. Also never found one under 4ft, im thinking both those might play some into it too, seems the ones you flip are far more docile than the hiked ones. Preciate it 🤝

Like I said in other comments, stepping on tin is just the reality of flipping some of these sites with 100’s of sheets of tin. It isn’t a big deal because the animals are in burrows or gaps and aren’t just wedged under the tin.

@@NKFherping Animals get smushed by walking on it. Especially those in between layers. It's not the reality of it. You don't have to walk on everything to flip it.

Love this KZfaq channel but what the camera was showing was a lot of flipping going on without a sense of awareness and started flipping on (HOT) snakes and seemed to start being kinda wreck less and again I love your content and seemed as to many flips without your safety protocol in order!!! = Bites!!!! Just depends on the day, it was around 35°F the morning there was ice on the tin but that isn’t normally a good thing. I prefer cloudy mornings after 50°-60°F overnights 👍

They’re all the same snakes at the end of the day, but generally I lump the foothills snakes in with Canebrakes.

That 6th Canebrake was a perfect example of why you don't step/walk on tin before you flip it. And then the last kingsnake of the 2nd day when that guy Kyle stepped right on the tin and the king was underneath his foot. Nothing is more annoying than watching them walk all over everything but even more so before it's even flipped. I imagine they've smashed animals but just do not show video of those.

I imagine you don’t get out in the field much. “That guy Kyle” and Armin are both some of the most experienced tin flippers in the community. As you saw, the Kingsnake was perfectly fine after Kyle stepped on the tin it was under. This is because, like most snakes under tin, the Kingsnake was in a burrow. I should also add that tin was completely concealed by grass before we dug it out to look underneath, so to complain about that piece in particular is just weird nitpicking. This is just the reality of flipping hundreds of sheets of tin in a day, some sheets will get stepped on and the snakes are always fine because they have to be in a preexisting cavity to get under the tin in the first place.

@@NKFherping Longer than you have been flipping. Not every animal is in a burrow. And flipping a spot for the first time, you don't know If there are layers or just a single piece. Just because those two do it doesn't mean you teach others to do the same. Enough of us over the years have seen what walking on cover does to know that you simply do not do it.

@@justinchristoph8666 Take a deep breath and actually think about what you’re saying. You watched multiple perfectly fine snakes come out from under stepped on tin. The odds of a snake being pinched at all under tin is very slim (since they’re almost always in a cavity of some kind), and the odds of being briefly pinched actually hurting an animal that can survive being run over by a truck is even smaller. Once again, all things you would know if you really spent much time in the field.

More than likely, you’re seeing snakes that were stuck after the tin was put down on top of them. I see this at spots that are well known by other herpers, particularly with large stacks of tin that are easy to shift and put back incorrectly. Strangely enough, I have never found a dead snake under tin that I know I’m the only person hitting. The only time I have seen snakes crushed under single sheets of tin is when they’re repeatedly trampled by cows or horses.
