Bryce is voiced by Tohru Furuya, known for voicing Amuro Ray from Gundam, Yamcha from Dragonball and Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon. He's like the most top tier voice actor they can hire for the game so they're probably getting the best out of him. That's likely the reason why they didn't get a fluent English person to voice him.

@@zuni46 I was going to say Furuya Tohru is like 70 years old already and people of his generation didn't have much exposure to English, while it is immersion-breaking it is not on his part, more of a production decision really. And then I read your comment and search videos of Ryo Horikawa speaking English... and wow I am so surprised, more so when I read his wikipedia entry which says that it is not like he lived in an English speaking country or have an English speaking spouse or anything (which are common reasons VAs speaking a fluent foreign language). He just put a lot of effort into it. It is quite impressive really.

To answer your question, the JP voice track was probably recorded months in advance before the eng dub was even recorded. Meaning that all the English speaking NPCs that you hear are probably English speakers living in Japan working for agencies out there. Two completely separate audio tracks that they just can't splice together lol

Why didn’t they just use Bryce’s English VA and Danny Trejo. Why even have Danny Trejo facescan if you’re not gonna have him in for the Japanese dub where the majority of players will use? He could had just spoken English and everyone just understand him it would had been fine.

Honestly they could've just use AI with a little tweaking. The ones where they replaced YongYea with Japanese Kiryu AI to English in Gaiden was very good and accurate.

It's strange that they use Engrish Bryce when they have his English dub, since you have those small scenes even in the Japanese dub where characters use their English VA. For Tomizawa I get, since he's of Japanese descent and associates with Yamai, a yakuza, but Bryce is Caucasian, no? Ah, well, it's a small gripe. It's not like Engrish Bryce sounds terrible, just...awkward.

My guess is that they didn't record the English dub simultaneously (given how Gaiden's dub was delayed) and so they used their own actors.

I’m sure they didn’t make Bryce’s voice actor a native English speaker because they still don’t know how to make English sound natural. Even the characters voiced by actual English speakers don’t sound like real English. English speakers do not sound like that. English is a language spoken with sounds and letters that are hard, distinct, and heavy. The Japanese speaking characters do not do this so they end up sounding like my uncle after he’s had 5 large beers and is slurring all his words around.

The same reason why they don't cast someone who speaks fluent Russian and English for the role of Black Widow. Can the casting director find one? Yeah probably, there are loads of people out there who can do it. Among them, can they find one that does what Scarlett Johansson do? That's the issue I think.

Honestly, some parts of the Japanese dub kinda make me glad that I chose to use the English dub since it’s my main go to ever since Yakuza: Like a Dragon. At the same time, I just love English dubs since I like how American standards are for acting as a whole. Especially if most of the game takes place in America. **SPOILER WARNING** And personally, Yong Yea did a really god job with Kiryu, especially during the fight with Ebina, genuine screams from Yea sent CHILLS down my spine. He actually nailed the screams that Kuroda did. I can see Yea being a good next gen English Kiryu, as with Kevin Afghani carrying the torch for Mario’s new voice actor

Yeah, I think he needs time to adjust and they need to have him try to go lower more consistently, more or less. His voice to me was perfect for Kiryu during the serious moments where he spoke in lower registers, but I can just imagine that would be hell on his throat... then again, maybe just getting more experience doing it would help.
