One of the best renditions of this masterpiece I've ever heard. Lola Astanova must have been a prodigy. She looked at the keys and the conductor. Obviously there was no audience, but had there been, I would loved to have seen Lola smile.

Surprisingly, a small orchestra like this goes very well with the Rhapsody. A big orchestra is more lush, but can drown out the piano. While Bernstein's piano/conductor videos from 1976 are more famous, he makes a LOT of errors. His timing is perfect, and his playing is otherwise great, but his mistakes are jarring to those who know the piece. Lola is devoted to piano, so she could rehearse this for months ahead. Bernstein was also composer, conductor, music director and famous socialite, which left little time for practice. Lola's performance here is superb.

I don't know if this is an American orchestra or not, but I suspect it is. American orchestra's tend to understand Gershwin's Jazz sensibility of the piece better than the European orchestra's do because Jazz is uniquely American.
