It's low key adorable how Ted's expression, such as it is, completely changes when Elsa says his name. If they're following the comic book canon, he really only gets annoyed with evil people so she might've been safe. Also, Man Thing plushies would sell.

@@johnstovall7503 That too but in the comics, he mostly burned bad people so it seems like he has some control over it or the writers just contrived it that way to keep him an antihero. I loved Man-Thing in this. Such a gentle giant. Not sure how he compares to the one from his own 2005 movie.
@wayneshobbygallery
@wayneshobbygallery Жыл бұрын
The 2005 one is legit scary and creepy as hell, but he's way too slow. & he's more of a villain rather than a misunderstood monster. I prefer the MCU version, he's way more faithful to the comics: less scary and more gentle but can be aggressive when agitated. This special made me realize why Man-Thing is a fan favourite, and it delivered. His future as a hero is definitely bright 😍😍😍

The one from 2005 sucked, I literally can't remember anything from it after watching it so long ago, it was that bad. I will do a review on it one day, once I get a good editing system & such. But will not be looking forward to it. I hope this special means we could see another Werewolf By Night special, & a Man-Thing, Tomb of Dracula, & The Monster of Frankenstein Specials.

It kind of reminds me how Manny was handled in the original Ice Age film, due to not having a visible mouth most of the time they had to work a lot more on his eyes to sell the expression. I also like the detail that his pupils spreading out when he’s angry/feral which reflects the glassy eyed look in the comics, but being more condensed when he’s calm/lucid which makes him seem more human, likely reflecting his origins.

They did a pretty good job in not only adapting this character, but also fitting him into this short film’s central theme of some monsters being people too (which is even more fitting for Ted considering he was actually human once in the comics, possibly still was in this continuity). It’s made all the more interesting that seemingly because of this portrayal of the character, I’ve seen more people refer to him as Ted rather than just Man-Thing (his human name is even in the title of this video). Here’s hoping that if they do another Halloween centered one-shot, it’s about the origins of Man-Thing, as the tragedy of Ted Salas’ transformation leaving him isolated and stripped of his identity could be a perfect contrast to showing him safe and happy with Jack as his one friend in a world he has no place in.

"Whatsoever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch." To be fair, he's not doing it on purpose, it's just a fact. He can't shut it off. I like this version better than the usual portrayal of the Man-Thing in the comics, where he's almost always portrayed as driven purely by instinct, with no real memory of ever having been Ted Sallis. In this version, there's seemingly some (perhaps childlike) fragment of Ted still in there. He responds to his human name, understand the things other people say to him (mostly) and seems to be capable of forming friendships and remembering interactions. It makes for a more nuanced character. Comics Man-Thing is usually more of a force of nature than a person with a character arc.

Can we appreciate just how fucking violent him grabbing and melting people is in presentation? Like it would have been easy to just make an effect of people turning into ash, or catching on fire, or melting into goo. But no they really went for it, he grabs them with hulk-like force and they immediately burst into flame(not catch alight, burst) on contact THEN start burning and writhing in pain. I mean 1:52 like wow.

And the head and face is the last thing to burn as well which is extra painful, you’re fully conscious through the whole thing

Reason why Man Thing is called Ted is because it was a scientist called Ted Salas who worked on a version of the super soldier serum and have injected it on himself but he crashed into a swamp and become that

As a long term M-T fan, I like what they did here. It's all too easy for him to become a two-dimensional tool used by the writers, or other characters in the story, to kill at necessary points in the story, a bit like a mummy arriving and doing the killing in horror films. As such, he can be almost an absence of character - an emotional reactor to events only. In this story, by giving him the ability to understand friendship and loyalty, it gives him a little more rounded humanity, makes him seem more real, and even allows for humour. A TV series or a film with the character portrayed in this style would be a must-see for me. :-)

Man-Thing/ Ted Sallis was a failed scientist devolved from his attempt to recreate the Super Soldier formula, a bit more expressive than comics. His late wife was an AIM spy who was killed in Iron Man 3

I did not expect to see him in the MCU. They’ve done an amazing job. I wish there was more stuff like Werewolf by Night instead of…whatever it is Marvel does nowadays.
